MGolfer Nick Carlson advances to final 8 in US Amateur at Oakland Hills

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Michigan golf sophomore Nick Carlson advanced to the final 8 of the US Amateur today after sticking his approach shot to 4 feet on the par 4 18th and sinking the birdie putt for the win over Thailand's KK Limbhasut. Carlson is from Hamilton, Michigan, so it's pretty cool to see him representing Michigan so well on the local track.

For those unfamiliar with golf, this is the most prestigious and diffifult amateur-only golf tournament in the US (and possibly the world). The likes of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are past champs.

Just to add a little info, he actually played 2 matches today. In the Round of 32 this morning, he defeated the #6 ranked amateur in the world and British Amateur champion Scott Gregory. Pretty impressive stuff.

Made some real clutch shots down the stretch. Hope he keeps it going. He'll have a tough matchup with Illinois' Meyer, who putted really well today, in the quarterfinals

Meyer's been playing very good the last few weeks and is riding a hot putter. He won the Western Amateur last week and advanced today defeating the #2 ranked amateur in the world, Sam Horsfield. Hope Nick can keep it up and not only represent U of M but also the state of Michigan.

Actually won both matches today in 19 holes--sudden death. Had good sized leads in both matches but eventually got caught. Stayed composed and won in playoffs. Pretty clutch stuff from the kid.

This guy deserves this. He has near Harbaugh-level determination and dedication. I was a senior on Hamilton's golf team when Nick was in eigth grade. Everyday he was out there playing with us (and playing better than us). He was always working to get better. When everyone else would head home after practice he would stay and work on his short game. So proud of how far he has come and I know there is only more good to come from him. Go Blue and Go Nick.

I couldn't agree more about his work ethic. I never knew him personally, but I worked at a golf course/restaurant in the hamilton area throughout college when he was in middle schoo/ high school with a couple of his family members. He was around the course most days throughout the week (and that wasn't even the course he played most!), his work ethic was second to none of anyone trying to become a great golfer in the area. Very pleased but not the least bit surprised that he is having success. Good for him!

He played some great golf today. Hopefully he can pull the win over the next few days here. The course is looking awesome and the pin placements today were pretty crazy on some holes (16!!!). Hopefully, a good showing by the OHCC here will get another US Open to the Detroit area soon.

Took the afternoon long ago and made plans to spent it at Oakland Hills for the Amateur followed by some Dream Cruise action.  As luck would have it Nick made it to the round of 16 and so we were able to follow Nick around the course.

First all, it is a great event.  I have been to some PGA events but enjoyed this far more.  You pretty much are free to roam around the course at your leisure and the smaller crowds make for a pleasent and up close and personal experience.

It was fun to have somebody to cheer for and there was a good sized Michigan contigent.  Nick was wearing a Michigan gold shirt and a hat with the State of Michigan and a little heart (I think) at Ann Arbor.

There was one jerk Sparty in the crowd who insisted on yelling "Go Green"  whenever the Thai guy made a good shot.

The 2 semifinal winners in this event automatically receive invitations to the 2017 Masters Tournament (assuming they maintain their amateur status until then).
