MGolfer Nick Carlson advances to final 4 of US Amateur

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

In a pretty stunning upset, UM golf sophomore Nick Carlson advanced to the final 4 of the US Amateur, defeating the #31 amateur in the world in All B1G and Illini golfer Dylan Meyer. Carlson was ranked slightly better than #2000 going into the event, so it was a stunner that Carlson beat Meyer 3 & 1.*

As a huge bonus, if Carlson can advance to the final round, he'll guarantee himself a spot at the Masters in 2017.

For the board golf fans, tickets are probably still available for tomorrow's semifinals rounds at Oakland Hills.

*How do you even go about ranking the world's amateur golfers?

Is there a channel for this? I've looked up Golf Channel and I don't see anything about this...not even a tape delay. Your help is appreciated. Congrats either way...this is awesome for a northern golfer to do so well. I know Illinois has a strong team but this is great exposure for us and the team.

I'm pretty sure Indexes (handicaps) are governed by the USGA (and I believe the R&A in the UK). GAM is just the Michigan golf association (in cahoots with the USGA).

Rankings are by performance in amateur tournaments.

These guys play at such a high level, and in so many sanctioned tournaments, that the data are huge and the rankings pretty much gambling-quality. For Carlson to b where he is with his going in ranking, whoa.

Anybody following this without a knowledge of the golf world... What Carlson has done, getting to the final four of the US Amateur, is unfuckingbelievable.

Rankings work much the same way as the world golf rankings for pros. Performance in "counting events" gives you points, and players are ranked by point totals divided by some number, all adjusted for strength of field. Obviously an imperfect system, but amateur golf doesn't have a level playing field to begin with. Carlson isn't even close to the best player on the Michigan team though - he was apparently 5th in tournament scoring average last year. To sustain that level of performance across US Am qualifying, 36 holes of stroke play, and all those matches is absurd. The kid can play.

it's at Oakland Hills with all the support.

So who interviews him after the win:  Holly Sauders.  She ended the interview rather akwardly with:  "I like you, but I am a Michigan State grad."  If she did not have the fake boobs . . .
