MGoFilm Analysis Ep. 2.3 || Run Offense vs Purdue

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on

Hey guys. Here's the 3rd and final part of my analysis against Purdue. If you haven't seen them thus far, here are the two other parts of my analysis against Purdue:

Episode 2.3 focuses on run plays Michigan ran against Purdue. It was overall an underwhelming performance (3.2 ypc), so I decided it was worth another look.

Check out the post on MGoFish here, which has additional comments from myself. I'll embed the video below:

As always, I encourage constructive criticism and other people to chip in on their analysis of each play. I'm definitely an amateur at this and fully expect to miss a thing or two.

Let me know what kind of analysis you guys would like to have in the future. Hopefully next week it'll be nothing but positive analysis against MSU. Go blue and beat state!

As usual, love it.  A few observations:

Play #1:  Yeah, Issac made the wrong cut in retrospect, but at the point he's given the ball the lane he chose wasn't that bad.  I don't fault him much for this one.

Play #2:  Man, if this was play action to DPJ... hoo boy.  Chunk yards.

Play #3:  Wish we had this Higdon vision last year vs OSU.

Play #4:  Miscommunication definitely a part.

Play #5: No comment.

Play #6: No comment.

Play #7: No comment.  $

Play #8: At first I thought Onewnu messed up and should've pulled faster, but on rewatch Purdue's D scheme just didn't have anyone there for him to block.  He did a good job going for the next available defender.

Agree on #8 - I initially thought that Onwenu should have gone for the guy that Evans made miss (the safety). But he IDed the right guy, who actually pursued too far to the outside and took himself out of the play / into Poggi's block. Couldn't fault Onwenu for having his guy take himself out of it.

Minor thing, but I would add a second or two of background before each live play. It's a rather quick transition from the final frame of analysis into the next play, so just a black screen with quarter + time, score, formation(?), and anything else that seems relevant would serve to set it up and give a little reset from the last play.

Something not mentioned is O Line blocking better in the second half of Purdue.

...may be they are getting it now??? Will find out soon!

This certainly increased my football IQ. Thanks for all the time you must have put into making these videos. Makes on appreciate the UFR process as well.

1: I'm not sure why you think Isaac made the wrong decision not to cut back to the right when the play isn't called for it. Poggi served as a decoy to further mess up the LB's key.  If Isaac was able to break the tackle, he probably gets a 1st down.

2. Ulizo has to do a better job at his aiming point. He was too aggressive at coming into the LB's body. If he make a deeper run to a bit of LB's left side, he would've gotten him or at least push him upfield.

3. It was a well executed play by everyone. It got the first down which is important. This is where Higdon's lack of creativity in space kind of hurts him bc a more creative runner would've found a way to get by the S crashing down to stop Higdon. This is one of my biggest criticism for Harbaugh RBs aside from spotty vision. My hope is O'Maury Samuels would solve the problem once he bulks up without losing much of his athleticism. You look at Stanford's RBs from this season and the past few seasons, Christian McCaffery and Bryce Love are creative runners who can make people miss in space. They're a departure from what John Harbaughttp://mgoblog.com/comment/reply/118695#comment-formh typcially recruit at Stanford. This is what makes OSU RB, JK Dobbins, so special. It's his ability to make people miss in space and accelerate out of the cut. Same with Akrum Wadley from Iowa.

4. Your conclusion is correct that there is a miscommunication with the line calls by Kugler and it is on Kugler for it. If Kugler makes the call, it's up to Bredeson to rely that info to Cole. Somewhere along the line, it didn't happen. Also, Bredeson lunged at the defender which makes it easy for the defender to stack and shed block.

5. Kugler needs to do a better job at aiming lower and he aimed too high for a cut block. It looks like he aimed it at his waist and it barely mattered since the defender was able to shrug off the block.  Yes, Poggi needs to get into the edge defender's body sooner but the edge defender did a great job at disrupting Onwenu's path as you can see him put his hands onto his body.

6. That defender did a great job at shooting upfield to force it back inside. It's tough for McKeon to pick that up while pulling. As far as your criticism, it's unwarranted since they did their job. If that defender didn't shoot upfield, there is a greater chance of going for a big gain like saying Cole shouldn't have run past the defender but you can't say it based on the result of the play. Higdon was supposed to follow Cole then make a cut based off from it on the outside.

7. It was a well designed/excecuted play by the offense. Two thing, either it's on the S or SAM LB for keeping an eye on McKeon. Since the LB has the key to read and he's simply following the puller which means the S has to vacate where SAM LB left off.  My conclusion is it's on the S for messing it up.  He would've prevent a TD at the very least but still a decent gain.

8. It was a wonderfully executed play. Purdue S, #5 did a bad job at not stopping Evans. He overran his angle and once he realized it, it was an easy cut to the right for Evans.

On #1 if Isaac makes the cut he doesn't have to break a tackle. Michigan had a gapping hole on the right with the LB about to show in the hole accounted for as well with Onwenu. Looks like Isaac reads Ulizio's block initially and doesn't trust it hold up, which I guess you can't really blame him.

which is why Isaac went to the left. It's not a IZ run play, not with a gap run blocking on that play. Isaac made the correct read on that play.

Saying Isaac made the wrong read is incorrect IMO when the play doesn't call for him to read to cut to the backside of the play. There's a hole on the left and Isaac made the correct read.

How is it not? The jet motion is specifically to get the outside LB to take a lateral step so the FB can get the angle on him. Look at the angle Onwenu takes to the MIKE, he's trying to block down to create the lane opposite Poggi's block.

Seems like a simple follow-you-FB iso play is more likely the call here than some elaborate misdirection to the other side.

On #2 the corner on DPJ either saw something on film that tipped him off to run or got lucky as hell that it wasn't play action. DPJ would have been uncovered with no safety over the top.

#5 looks like Kugler misidentified the Mike. He blocks the guy to his right instead of the DT over him. Bredeson and Onwenu is on the same page as him, but no one else is. Everyone else is blocking as if the MIKE is one player to the left. Woof
