MGoEvent a resounding success

Tonight's event was a lot of fun, and I got to see some old acquaintances and make some new ones, in some cases even including people to whom I didn't owe any apologies.

Marlin Jackson raised some money for his charity, Jerome Jackson talked about his experiences at Michigan and with Lloyd, and Chris Perry outed himself as Section 1 by asking Marlin and Jerome a question that started out about something important and ended with a Title IX reference.

I think Chris Perry's contributions were probably the highlight of the night. He's clearly a funny guy. But for me, it was Marlin. In addition to being a stand up guy, he picked out the SQuad-West Quad snowball fight as his favorite off-field moment, and later he let me tell him the story of how I totally owned him in one of those fights (by hitting him with a snowball and then ducking behind some girl who absorbed the return fire on my way to celebrate heroically). He even signed a couple of photos of himself as a Colt for my dad, an Indiana native, and father-in-law, still a Colts fan despite having been jilted during his youth in Baltimore.

The beer was good and flowed freely until we drank it all. The food must have been good, because it had been inhaled by the time I arrived just before 8.

Before I shut up and let others fill in the rest, I just want to say thanks to Seth, Brian, and the rest of the MGoStaff for another great event.

My favorite was listening to a woman tell Marlin Jackson she named her cat after him - several times in a long drawn out story. What did he say one she was done ? "I'm allergic to cats"

Overall a cool event though - good to see Perry was getting into the sauce as well...

But was waiting on getting my copy of Fourth and Long signed by John U Bacon over at Nicolas Books. I did make it in time to win a raffle prize though. Looking forward to game tomorrow! Go Blue!

I was wondering at one point, but I didn't hear him say anything about it. Jerome Jackson did talk a little bit about what he's doing, and I think he said something about training to become a pilot, along with a more regular job. But my recall after beer is obviously not great.

It really did go well, I thought. I enjoy being able to put faces with MGoHandles, and it was a bonus to not only have former players talk but to help out a great cause.

The bonus of the evening was the light display at the stadium as well as the band practicing inside, which you could clearly hear from the patio.

I need more evidence before I can believe Perry is Section 1. Did every remark feature a defense of Rich Rodriguez, a slam of Lloyd and an attack on Michael Rosenberg?

I'd very much agree with that. I know also that Chris Perry and I had some different impressions of the Rodriguez era but that's okay. Chris outranks me. And I do very much respect him.

It was a great night. Thanks to everyone that made it out here tonight, particularly the returning players. I hope everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to the whole MGoBlog team for making things easy. I hope to more events here in the future.

Let's make the predictions come true and give ND a real reason to run away from this series.

LET"S GO BLUE!

BEAT ND!

Getting the food before it ran out. No, actually it was a woman asking Perry how often he read MGoBlog and him saying I never read MGoBlog. Thought it should be the tag line at the top of the front page. But Brian got him back when Perry piggy-backed on Marlin's saying he'd advise future players to interact with students outside football Brian said "like engineers?" and Chris said well, the female ones, and Brian zinged "well, I'm the closest thing to a female engineer" twirling his gorgeous locks. All in good fun, great beer, good people to chat with, great turnout, good cause, and amazing set up by Seth. It's funny that it's gone from "boy I hope the book signing isn't as big a disaster as the (original) MGoTailgate just over a year ago, to a huge crowd in a party atmosphere with ex-players that would make most alumni association branch gatherings jealous.

Man, great time. My buddy and I got to talk to Chris Perry for a bit, what a cool guy. Free beer, Michigan football talk. Made us Texas transplants feel right at home. GO BLUE!!

Highlight of my night: I stayed after for awhile and a bunch of other players showed up late:

  • Brandon Williams
  • Jeremy LeSeuer
  • Zia Combs
  • Darnell Hood

Anyway I talked to B-Will for a bit afterwards--he was there with his kid (who's named after Jason Avant) and hadn't been back for awhile, so suddenly the band starts playing the fight song at the stadium next door and he pauses and is like "Ah, there it is!" And me and Brandon and Javant just stared at the Big House listening to the Victors echoing through the night.
