Deep, dark, dirty secrets.

Every Day Should Be Saturday

Black Heart, Gold Pants

Black Shoe Diaries

What is your guiltiest moment / secret / thought as a Michigan fan? I'll go first:

- If I was Terrelle Pryor, I would have chosen Ohio State, too. In Columbus...he's a friggin rock star.

- I like Jimmy Clausen a lot and wish Henne had put up his numbers...from junior year anyway.

- I like watching Penn State and their machine like defense....especially the linebackers.

- I have yet to ever feel as awestruck as the time when I met Mike Hart my sophomore year. A couple years later, I was hanging out with some ball players, Forcier included....and truly was unexcited about it.

- I like Brent Musberger... a lot.

Yours?

-It was 2 hours away, had the program I wanted, and Michigan was just too expensive with out of state fees.  I wore a Michigan shirt every saturday, my freshman year was 2003, I put my system in the hall way and blasted the Michigan fight song after we won......obviously I got more than what was coming to me over the next couple years because my friends never forgot that.

-I lived across the street from AJ Hawk and Nick Mangold, and Mangold is one of the nicest guys I've ever met (hate to admit it).  He had some friends in town, came over, knocked on our door and introduced himself, wondering if it was possible for his buddy to park in our driveway over night.

However, I am proud to announce that AJ Hawk is one of the biggest assholes I have ever met, and he's twice as ugly up close.  Plus the girl he was dating before Quinn's sister was much hotter.

-I also hate to admit that while he was a complete douchebag, Brian Hartline did one of the FUNNIEST things I have ever witnessed:  We were at a bar that all the football players frequent, I'm assuming they drink for free.  After a long night of drinking, my buddy is staggering, talking about how much of a fag Hartline is, then he holds out his hand and says, " Did you see him?? He's only this tall!!"

Hartline then comes out of nowhere, crouches under his hand and stands up and says, "NO, I'm this tall mother fucker!"  He then stared as my buddy had the most BEAT Red face I've ever seen, and then walked away.  All of us started laughing so hard I almost pissed my pants.  I thought it was a cool thing, because he could have been a complete dick and walked in and got an offensive lineman to confront my buddy, but he didn't, he just walked away, hilarious!

That not only did I bet big against MIchigan when they went to Oregon, but I bet bigger against Michigan when the Ducks came to town in 2007.

And, for every comment in the Justice Hayes thread yesterday that asserted he was afraid of competition, coaches must have told him they werent interestested and the overall whininess that ensued, a little part of me each time wished that Dee Hart would go to another school in hopes that it would force some of those posters to finally just jump off the ledge.

- I went to MSU (in Grand Rapids) for my internship.

- I let my wife schedule our wedding on a football Saturday

- My great great uncle was a priest at ND and I have always liked and respected the Irish ( I am 50% Irish catholic)

-I was born in Ohio and went to med school in Toledo. All my relatives are OSU fans and a lot of my friends are too. I still talk to them. And, since I grew up in Michigan, some of my best friends are Spartans.

- I am jealous of Florida, Texax, USC and even OSU for their football success.

I think Tressel is a good coach and a nice guy

I punched a hole in my closet after we lost to Illinois at home in '99. Yeah, I was in high school and emotional.

I like to think of this coming season as Rodriguez's second as UM's coach. The 2008 squad was so miserable that I don't think it should even count against him.

I watch UM games until the bitter end, even when we are getting our asses kicked. Sometimes, I wonder why I subject myself to such torment.

I root for Pitt, my gf's school.

My gf doesn't understand my obsession with UM football, and thinks I'm crazy.

I have heard guys say that Ezeh is a veteran leader of the defense, but there is a large part of me that hopes that by the start of the Big Ten schedule Kenny Demens will be getting the majority of the playing time. I know that we are a long way away from fall camp and a lot of things can happen between now and really who am I to say who should get more playing time.. still I am just excited to see Demens play the next couple of years.

I left the '04 MSU game early.  Not when we were down 24-7, but when we were down 17-7 and punting late in the 3rd (right before State's 2nd long TD run).  It was my Junior year.  I stormed out of the student section in a semi-drunken rage.

While I obviously regret leaving the game early, I'm not sure how much I really blame myself for doing it.  We were playing like complete fucking shit against a State team we should have been railing.  It wasn't until the 4th quarter that we realized we had the best wideout in the country and we should maybe try getting him the ball.

Anyway, before you judge me, I would hope that I've been able to redeem my fanhood since then by:

  • Attending every home game since graduating in '06 (except 2)
  • Attending at least one road game every year
  • Paying $500 to go to the '06 OSU game by myself
  • Attending the '08 NW game and staying till the cold, bitter end (i.e. the Fandom Endurance III game)

Please be merciful with the negging...

My friend and I went to that one, and it's the only time in my life I thought I might lose my feet to frostbite. We were stuck near the top of the pressbox side, and the water was coming down in huge streams on us.  To this day he and I talk about how hard it was to stay for the whole game, and it took about three days to feel normal again.

I left the OSU game early last year. I stormed out of the student section and talked aloud to myself the whole walk back to my buds house. Every single person I saw I just threw my hands in the air and said something I was saying to myself at that moment about how we gave it away and we could have had it. I lost my mind that day and it has yet to fully return.

I was at the '04 MSU game with my Dad. I wanted to leave early. Sometime in the third quarter I think. He refused and said we would stay until the end. Man I am glad he did that. There was a guy in front of us who was wearing a Braylon Edwards jersey and had his face painted. The whole game he was yelling "throw it to Braylon". Once this finally happened I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack. He was high fiving everyone in our section and saying "they finally listened to me". Good stuff.

I started leaving the Alamo Bowl in 2005 as the clock was winding down, because I didn't want to get caught in a stream of red-clad assholes heading out (you walk to and from the Stadium). Had to watch the final play from the section tunnel.  Still didn't end well.

I banned my son's best friend - who is 9 - from coming to our house during The Game because he's an Ohio State fan. He told me he roots for Michigan when they're not playing Ohio State, so why can't I root for Ohio State when they're not playing Michigan? Because I can't, kid, that's why. Now piss off.

I also root for Big Ten teams in out of conference play (even OSU -- uugggh..)

I have so many friends that are Notre Dame fans I know more about their team than they do

I secretly wish that we still played smashmouth football. Our biggest enemy plays the style of football I grew up watching and fell in love with. If the spread brings good things to AA, I will be happy. But I will always love watching a cloud of dust demolish another team's will to survive.

it seems this game is rarely brought up as a "regret leaving early" example (usually '04 MSU or '05 PSU) but I remember quite a large chunk of the section I was in heading home after booing the team into the locker room.

* During the work day, I try to time when I will grab a bite so that I can read Brian's previews and UFRs while I eat.

* I cried when Lloyd was carried off the field in his final game.

* I left the Oregon game early - like middle of the 3rd quarter early (but I did not boo or jeer Henne by chanting Ryan Mallett's name when Henne was still in).

* I know that Florida went on to prove that they deserved to be in the Championship game in in 2006, but I still hate Urban Meyer for campaigning his way in over us.

- i left prank messages on drew henson's voice mail making fun of him our freshman year because we heard he was a dick to some girls. a couple of guys in our hall would make up a song, and then look up his number in the freshman dorm directory and directly leave them on his voice mail. it didn't make a lot of sense.

-my freshman IM hockey team was in crime notes for attacking the nite owl. i didn't participate. as soon as they started chasing it and hitting it with their sticks i decided i was just going to walk to markley. and then, next day, sure enough - crime notes. weird mix of pride and shame.

I grew up on the west coast, and when my wife was finishing up medical school in California and interviewing for residency, she visited both UM and OSU hospitals.  I went on trips to both programs with her.

I preferred Columbus.

In my defense, it was a bigger city, better job prospects for me, and having lived on the left coast my whole life I hadn't gotten the memo about the "Worst State Ever".

She overruled me and ranked UM first, where she eventually matched.  Which is yet another reason why I love her so much.

It's good to get that off my chest.

I was a Sparty fan until I got to Michigan.

I would have gone to state if they had Marine ROTC there.  Good thing they didn't because I would never replace my time at UM with anything.

I was in ROTC for about 2 days (the reason I chose State over MSU) before dropping out.

I never gave a crap about football until after the Sparty game in 2004, and wasn't a big fan until I started playing the NCAA games my sophomore year.

- I went to Bowling Green even though Michigan offered me admission. I still have no idea why, but there you go.

- My fiance is an Ohioan, but is willing to concede Michigan fandom to our future kids.

-On a similar note, pretty much all of of best friends are Ohioans/Buckeye diehards including my Best Man. We were roommates from 07-09 and had a house divided banner. Worst. Timing. Ever.

- I think Tressel would have been a perfect coach for us had he somehow wound up in Ann Arbor.

- Notre Dame's Victory March is catchy.

- The first time I saw Ohio State's campus on a visit to friends in Columbus I involuntarily seized up and hissed like a cat.

I like Magic Johnson and Mateen Cleaves.

I genuinely like Iowa when they're not playing Michigan.

Same with Northwestern.

I like the setting of Penn State's stadium.

I wish Tressel were more of a douche, but he's just not.

I am assisting the FreeP in pinning the oil spill in the Gulf on Coach Rod.

But seriously:

I have watched a Mich/OSU game with a bunch of Ohio State fans and me and wife being the only Michigan fans.

I think Pryor is a better fit at OSU than he would have been at Michigan

I think it's going to be two more seasons until we crack the 9 win mark.

I don't think Coach Rod will get a contract extension.

1) I had a dorm room assignment at Michigan State before I got a fortunate phone call from UofM.

2) I took a header after hitting the banner

3)My gf at the time (and now my wife of 21 years) pursuaded me to leave the Colorado game early.

4)I cried as the clock ticked down to zero against OSU in 97 (my dad was in from California for the game).

5) I was more excited after said OSU game than I was after the Rose Bowl that clinched the NC (which I attended with my dad, again.  Hooray Dad!)

I didn't cancel my Ann Arbor News subscription immediately after they did that academic hit piece.  Jon Falk talked to them like 2 days later, so I convinced myself they weren't shunning the paper. I actually still regret that to this day. Learned my lesson when it came to the Freep.

1. I left the 2008 Northwestern game at halftime to watch the rest of the game on tv (not on my own free will though, it was parents weekend and my parents wanted to go).

2. I root for OSU to be undefeated going in to The Game.

I was so impressed with their band that I thought it would be a good idea for our band to invest in one of those big bass drums.

Bigger than theirs, of course.

  • I too cried when Evan Turner hit that shot in the Big 10 conference tourney, Then I watched it over and over and over again. Stupid DVR
  • I think Tim Tebow is maybe the best college football player to ever play the game. I would have loved it if he had worn the winged helmet.
  • In 1990 I rooted for Loyola Marymount to beat us in the NCAA tourney. Hank Gathers had just passed away and I really thought that team deserved to win.
  • I love Dontrelle Willis
  • I am addicted to MGoBlog and its the greatest thing ever.

I have developed a bad habit of not being able to watch the games on TV live. My family has season tickets so I usually go to 4-5 home games per season. If it is a game I don't go to or an away game, I just can't bring myself to watch. I tape the game and if Michigan wins I watch it after it is over. If Michigan loses I don't watch it. This actually started for me during the '05 season. I get so into the games, live and die with every play, turnover etc, it is just too hard for me. Before the 2009 season I sat down with my family and we were dividing up games for the season. I actually volunteered to not go to the ND. I didn't think I would be able to take it. On the day of the game I had the day off from work so I could have watched the game if I had wanted to. I taped it instead. I mowed the lawn and did some other cleaning up around the house when the game was on. Finally I cracked and turned on the game just in time to see the final drive. I am trying to break this habit, but it is hard. Please forgive me MGoBlog community.

at a bar in newport News, Virginia.  My drinking intensified throughout the game as a coping mechanism.  After the block, I threw a bunch of cash on the table (still don't know if it was enough), stumbled to my car and drove the 5 miles back to my house with tears in my eyes (this does not help drunkin driving technique).  Once home I decided I was too drunk to make it to the front door, so I just passed out in the car for a couple of hours, woke up, puked out the window onto my driveway, and passed out again for another two hours.  Man, that was a bad day.

-I cried after UofM lost to UCLA in the NCAA tourney in 99? and to this day think that Jerod Ward would have hit a game tying 3 if Tractor Traylor hadn't gotten a lane violation

-I am truly jealous of the attractive women at the bars at State compared to UofM (no other big ten school tho)

-I haven't watched the Rose Bowl the last two years because I was too bitter over Michigan not making a bowl game

-I just read every single post of this thread while at work
