MGoBoard Rules "written and unwritten" refresher

Submitted by wresler120 on

I am pretty new to MGoblog and the forum, and yesterday I committed a major "no - no" when I posted a link to a bleacher report. Well .... I won't be doing that again. Then again today I saw a comment that stated a lot of OT was lacking in many posts.

I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to post their "written and unwritten" rules to the use of the MGoBoard. I want to know what I should never do, and some of things that just irritate people when it's posted on the MGoBoard.

This way myself and other new users who may begin posting soon will know what to post and what not to post.

I guess i would like to know some web sources i.e. bleacherreport that should never be linked to or referenced. Also, when to use OT, and when not to use OT. And any other rules that would be good for a newbie to know and follow.

Thanks!

I don't think that is bad per se, but it have been discussed so many times already that nobody has the energy to keep on commenting, also, I guess there's nothing left to be said... If the topic (even involving RR) is new, i don't have a problem with it, once Hoke starts winning it'll be less tiresome to talk about it I'd say

I remember visiting Rich Rod's house right after he took over the program.  I was going to cook him dinner and man he didn't have anything in that cupboard.  Lloyd Carr even took that bottle of ketchup that had been sitting there for 10 years.

No trolling other boards. Reading 11 Warriors/Bucknuts/RCMB/BHGP for schadenfreude purposes is okay, but posting jackass-ish stuff on their boards makes us all look bad.

Also, if you are scanning other teams' message boards, it is much better to (1) find the most hilariously douchey comments, (2) copy them, and (3) post them on a new thread here with an intro like "look how douchey the people on 11 Warriors/Bucknuts/RCMB/BHGP are being today!" so that we can all enjoy it.

It's great to read all of these comments. This will go a long way, and I am excited to interact with everyone on here, especially as the football season draws closer.

If you're going to earn a banhammer, do it in one fell swoop.  Nickle-and-dime ad hominems over the course of a couple weeks are annoying; k06em01 blaze-outs are the way to go.

k06em01 was odd and bit abrasive, but always relatively cordial until this thread, which was his fulcrum into the dark side:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/how-much-would-you-love-see

I seem to recall an official blowout within a day or two afterward that ultimately caused the ban hammer to drop, but could not immediately locate it.  It would have been circa December 3, 2009.

A couple of days later he gave an epic sendoff from what many believe to be one of his many alternate accounts that he used primarily to upvote himself:

BONUS:  Random, pre-meltdown thread for flavor.  In it, user "Charlie Fupa" posts what is for some reason my all-time favorite MGoBlog comment (see third comment posted):

One more thing. I hate SIAP before any thread title. Double posting really isn't that big of a deal but if you don't want to hit the search button, then you live with the ball busting that will ensue if the topic is still on the first page. SIAP will not save your ass.

I disagree, and here's why: There is the possibility that a thread veered off-topic, and/or morphed into something, wherein a commentor may have posted a link to something or referenced something that wouldn't show up when you do a search. Hence, when I post something new (which is usually rare), if it's more than a day old, I'll do a search, but still will be concerned that the scenario outlined above may have taken place, unbeknownst to me. Hence, I will say "SIAP," because I AM truly sorry. You can expect people to search; you can't expect them to read every comment in every thread, though for some reason, I still feel anticipatory guilt if I somehow missed something that was posted in the comments of a section...like I should have been paying more attention or something. I know, I know- this is really odd of me. Just humor my "SIAP" if I use it in the future.

My name's 03 Blue 07, and I am an MGoBlogaholic. Apparently. Or just neurotic. Probably both.

1. If it's over a day old and it's vaguely related to Michigan (especially Football), it's already been posted.

2. No one cares if you give something it's own thread if it's buried in another thread where no one would see it or think to look for it. If they do, they are assholes. There is no reason to be sorry for that.

If it's already been posted, you'll get a few negs before it gets taken down. If it was a stupid title on the other post, that won't go against you. If it's buried in an irrelevant thread, that won't go against you either. SIAP is an admission that there is a chance that it's already been posted, which means that you don't feel you searched hard enough. So, I will neg someone if it's an obvious mistake, or if they use SIAP because it doesn't appear that they did enough to prevent a duplicate even in their own eyes.

1. When you start a thread, have a point....it makes it so much more interesting for the reader!

2. If you see an OT thread about something you don't like (basketball, rap music, etc) then just don't fucking click it. We don't care if you think rap music is "crap" music or if basketball hasn't been good since Jordan retired.

Right on with #2.  I've never really been able to figure out the view from some around here that the the MGoBoard space is as sacred as Moses' tablets or something.  If you have something fresh that people on here will enjoy discussing, post it.  I'd much rather ignore a couple of threads that don't appeal to me than see fun, informative, or thought-provoking topics die before they're born.

It's the offseason.  Post stuff.

I'm not against all OT posts, but Mgoblog went through a period last offseason where there wasn't

  1. Massive OSU implosion
  2. Delicious rivalry schadenfreude
  3. Hokemania/Commitment parties

It got to the point where the entire front page of the Mgoboard was nothing but OT, which would tend to push the few and far between Actual Michigan Football related news out of sight fairly quickly, leading to repeat posts, etc.

I think the low point was, to phrase this in a nice way, a post on a user's dog's medical issues.

I mean, if you need to get people's opinions on OT type stuff, there's always the Rivals and Scout boards, or the RCMB.

Er I am scared to post this as it's such a noob question and am sure it's a ridiculously easy solution I was too dumb to figure out and I don't want to get growled at......but when I am posting a link to something how do I change it to words rather than the URL?

And so as the whole of my message is not too OT, I will say that I have learned on here to when in doubt be supportive of a recruit even if they are not choosing Michigan and when you are referring to something in a thread on page 3 that was earlier go back to that person's post and reply to them rather than add a new comment.

If you think you may be too drunk to post: you're too drunk to post.

Don't post things because most of the time your just going to get scolded for it or critiqued, also you must be obsessed with Llyod Brady for some reason ive never understood, and pictures of cats.

being sarcastic about the not posting things obviously, turd fergeson hit it on the head though, some on here just bitch at you instead of actually commenting on the topic. Its a for sure that atleast some one will want to talk on the topic posted.

1). If you're posting pictures, please make sure that they are small enough as so not to spill over into the sidebars, making navigation impossible.

2). Please post like we know your real name and where you live.  If you say it, own it and own up to it.

3). If you're using a signature, please try to make sure it's one of the smaller, more dignified ones.

4). Please try to make use of an avatar that is distinctive, safe for work, and memorable.  Some of us work visually when reading a thread.

...in the MGoHallofFame on this topic. Check it out under "Useful Stuff" above. 1. Don't be a jerk. 2. Have something useful or humorous to add. 3. Don't try to be witty unless you have something witty to say. Otherwise it's not witty. 4. Don't be afraid to create a thread, but make your titles useful, put some meat on the bone in your post, and learn how to use the tools. 5. SIAP is lame, lame, lame. 6. Be original and develop your MGoPersona. 7. Take constructive criticism constructively but don't be afraid to stick up for yourself when it makes sense. 8. Be willing to walk away from a confrontation. 9. Don't whine when someone calls you out for something stupid that you've done. 10. Be the ball, Danny.

Off the top of my head:

  1. For all intensive purposes, don't be a premadonna looser.
  2. Don't be Bougie.
  3. Don't think Clevermichiganretort is a gay dude (NTTAWWT).
  4. Don't make an emo whine post.
  5. THE KNOWLEDGE is funny. Just submit. Resistance is futile.
  6. Don't post a list of inside MGoBlog references that demonstrates that you have spent way too much time on MGoBlog.

It is not an unwritten rule that you should not correct others' writing. That's what grammar National Socialists are for. There is disagreement on the board as to the role of language corrections, but it is not a rule AFAIK.

It is not, to the best of my knowledge, an unwritten rule that you should not respond to your own posts.

It is not an unwritten rule not to get jokes related to the phrases or words "intensive purposes," "premadonna," or "looser." However, not getting those jokes demonstrates your relative newcomer status or that you are a light user of MGoBlog, which, implied in #6 in my post, is not necessarily a bad thing.
