MGoBoard Rules "written and unwritten" refresher

Submitted by wresler120 on

I am pretty new to MGoblog and the forum, and yesterday I committed a major "no - no" when I posted a link to a bleacher report. Well .... I won't be doing that again. Then again today I saw a comment that stated a lot of OT was lacking in many posts.

I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to post their "written and unwritten" rules to the use of the MGoBoard. I want to know what I should never do, and some of things that just irritate people when it's posted on the MGoBoard.

This way myself and other new users who may begin posting soon will know what to post and what not to post.

I guess i would like to know some web sources i.e. bleacherreport that should never be linked to or referenced. Also, when to use OT, and when not to use OT. And any other rules that would be good for a newbie to know and follow.

Thanks!

I know most of this info is available via search, but it would be nice to consolidate it. Perhaps a newbie forum section describing the traditions of mgoblog, in case we have a "throwback jersey" incident after Brian becomes rich and famous and hires the ceo type to do his job.

Don't bash players, don't resort to name calling to refere to rival schools, use informative titles, don't bash ex-coaches, provide links, quote the reference if you have one..., don't post hoaxes, even if you didn't know those were hoaxes... also mlive, freep, Bleacher report are frowned upon, you can quote them, but be cautious

EDIT: also, don't copy and paste an article, you can provide the link and quote some parts, but don't paste the entire article

a no-hitter, do not talk about it as a no-hitter. Certainly do not open a new thread to point it out.

Also, no discussing which players specifically could leave the team.

Also, no pictures or animation in your signature at the bottom.

Also, if something is funny or sarcastic, don't get all pissed off and reply "NO YOU ARE WRONG AND HERE ARE THE REASONS YOU ARE WRONG!" It kills the collective buzz we have going for Michigan.

No sexist, homophobic, or racist remarks.  Ever.   It's not a "p.c." thing, it's a "don't be an asshat" thing.

Even when "arguing," "debating" or correcting someone's facts and/or behavior, do it in a manner that a reasonable adult would do it and not a 12 year old or your drunkin' buddies.

And smile, always always smile.

I think the main thing is to remember that recruits, parents, and players do actually read the blog. Just off the top of my head, I know we've had Jordan Diamond and Shawn Hunwick post before.

That doesn't mean we have to praise them every second. We can be critical, but the most important thing is to be respectful. We are representing Michigan in this blog, and we should be a good representation. That respect also goes for rivals, and do not use stupid nicknames like O$U or something like that.

Also, know what 48 / 2(9+3) is.

Wait, wha? When did Diamond or Hunwick post here?

And I can't back up more what you (and others) say about using stupid nicknames. Don't use them. It makes you look really dumb when you rib another fanbase for referring to us as Walverines or scUM, then turn around and use an equally immature nickname. Just show some class and you'll be fine.

I'm pretty new here, but I thought I remember reading about not calling recruits/players studs.

I've seen this a lot this summer as the recruiting has gone quite well, and we are in on a ton of great talent.

As someone who has been here a while, please advise.

Don't post or say anything you wouldn't want you mother to read. Or more accurately, Brian's mother to read, because she does.

If you're going to link the Detroit Free Press, make it the printable version, so we don't give them more hits. There are also several writers that I wouldn't bother linking here...

One rule that I often see violated by new posters who don't read the FAQs is the "no politics" rule.  I think this blog, and Michigan football in general, has a way of bringing together quite a diverse group of people and I think keeping politics out of the discussion is a big part of that.

(Plus it makes my blood boil when someone posts something political that I disagree with, but I can't respond without breaking the rule myself, and then....)

If you find yourself typing something to the effect of "I'm not trying to sound political, but..." then you should probably just avoid posting your comment altogether.

...I learned about Bleacher Report's lack of esteem here the same way you did.  IIRC, though, my "learning experience" wasn't done in as friendly a manner as I tried to do for you.

My experience has been that if you remember you are in a public forum talking about kids, most of whom aren't even 21 yet but are busting their asses for the Maize and Blue, and that calling any of them out personally usually isn't the least bit cool, you will be fine.

Two huge no-no's that newbies might not figure out on their own:

A feminine diminuitive concerning Sparty that has gotten one or two people 1,000,000-point negbangs by the mods.

Use of "$" concerning OSU, MSU, or USC.

I hope you enjoy it here.

You're doing well at this, but uninformative thread titles are the bane of my existence.

Also grammar/spelling will get you killed 'round these parts.

I am with you, but I think the rule needs to be more specific.  For instance, threads such as "Was firing RR the right decision?" or the dreaded "Was Rich Rod's lack of success at Michigan entirely his own doing or did Lloyd leave the cupboard bare" should be prohibited entirely.  But questions like "Where do you think RR will end up in 2012" or stuff like that might be okay.

All RR threads end in disaster. It can't be helped. Even me just typing RR will end badly. Actually when you type RR, your phone rings and someone says creepily "You have 7 days."
