MGoBoard FAQ
Why can't I start threads?
New users are not entrusted with that capability until they reach 100 points. (Updated 11/29/2010)
How do I get points?
Every time you post a comment or reply in a thread you get a point.
Wait… then why do I have negative 60?
You can't see this yet—you won't until you get to 100 points, naturally—but all posts/comments come with the ability to vote up or down on them. If you post things that are displeasing to the general populace, you will lose points as people downvote you. You get two points per upvote and minus one per downvote.
How can I avoid downvotes?
Don't be redundant. Don't use stupid nicknames like O$U. Spell things correctly. Don't post useless replies like "I agree" and whatnot.
What happens when I get huge numbers of negative points?
I get dinged and I check your profile out to see if you're pure troll or not, and ban appropriately.
What should I title my threads?
Please make your thread titles as informative as possible: "Justin Feagin" is bad. "Justin Feagin leaving the team?" is good.
How can I bold stuff, insert images, embed videos, etc?
ShockFX provided a helpful primer on basic HTML if you'd like to add some visual pop to your posts.
Why did my post get deleted/edited?
Getting personal on college athletes usually results in a deletion, and virtually always when it's a Michigan player in question. Threads that invite flaming also get deleted. Threads with misleading titles designed to scare the crap out of readers before they click will either be deleted or edited so that their titles reflect their contents.
What is the board's tolerance for language?
Calibrate your language to what it would be at a Michigan tailgate with lots of strangers. We don't ban people for expletives (we do track them though) but we do ask that you avoid offensive language. If someone corrects your language (e.g. please don't use "thug" due to racial overtones) try to respect that. Avoid blasphemy too please--in this you can follow the main page writers' example in using cognates like gotdang, goldang, gotdam, or change up religious expressions to made up/generic polytheistic ones like "Pray to the holy Denard" or "the gods."
Can I repeat premium information?
To a limited extent. More details are here. Briefly: don't hit CTRL+C, and don't repeat every last detail.
What's the offtopic policy?
In the offseason, offtopic posts are tolerated. During football season they are discouraged and may be subject to removal depending on how alert the moderators are. What counts as on- and off- topic?
ONTOPIC
- Anything Michigan sports related
- Anything related to other Big Ten teams or upcoming opponents
- Stuff about the blog itself
- University of Michigan topics that don't relate to sports
GRAY AREA
- College sports in general
- Ann Arbor
UNWELCOME, KTHX
- Politics
- Drew Sharp, Ace Williams, Mike Valenti. Saying stupid and/or false things about Michigan in order to get Michigan fans upset is a tried and true way to phish for clicks. Let's not feed the trolls.
- Bewbs/Objectification of women. Whatever misogynistic "standard guy stuff" gets tolerated on other sports sites you visit will NOT fly here.
OFFTOPIC
- Pro sports of any variety
- Everything else
We will let pro sports topics slide even during football season but "everything else" posts are likely to get the axe. A few known exceptions for annual local culture things (e.g. there's an annual thread at the opening of firearm deer season).
Can you connect me to another user?
No, sorry. We value our users' privacy too much to share their contact information and I don't have the time to service connections anymore. Social media outlets all have direct message options these days for individuals to connect.
I have another question.
Don't forget about informative titles.
nothing worse than uninformative titles
Undefeated. Please!!! That is all.
Should this post be counted as diary or mgoboard??? Just kidding thanks for the reminders.
One can I start a diary with 0 points, but needs 20 points to start a thread on the MGoBoard; shouldn't it be the other way around?
PS - in the spirit of FAQ, I think more people would like to know the answer. Thus, the comment instead of a private email. Thanks for understanding.

More points should be required to start a diary than a message board post. Diaries need more thought and work than a couple of sentences on the board.
I would propose 40 mgopoints to start a diary, and keep the message board thread limit at 20.
can we add religion to that.
k?
I think for most of the people on this board, Michigan Sports is a sort of religion, so no, probably not.
I think worship on (fall) Saturdays is fully supported by Mgoblog.

and I think Chuck Woodson can literally walk on water
I really like your take on the issue. I now have a clear idea on what this matter is all about..
агентства недвижимости в Монако
oops
+1, I was gonna post exactly that. There's my useless reply for the day.
Can we add religion? Good question, let's pray about it.
Brian, maybe you should put this under "Useful Stuff" for future reference.
One of these days, I will figure out how to add boxes and bold and italics and size pics, etc. A link showing how to do this would be great.
There's a sticky topic with all the info. Hope I'm not missing a joke...
i think the stubject title is pointless since barely anyone uses it anyways
Thank you Brian. This probably will get buried soon though... maybe make it show when a person makes a username.
? The post is stickied...
I'm guessing he navigates the board through the sidebars which don't have stickies. I actually didn't realize that the mgoboard link at the top was different from the mgoblog tracker until today.
can you add a section to "useful stuff" where we list every person who has receieved the banhammer? I think that would be interestig!

Double Co-signed
Maybe I'm just blind, but I don't see where you can vote or downvote posts that you read. I occasionally see people write "+1" in their actual posts, but I assume that doesn't actually translate into gaining points
Then a watermarked up/down arrow appears next to each post and each comment. Here's an up vote to send you on your way to wonderful, new sights to behold at MGo.
Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully Brian reads this and adds this to his FAQ

I'm over the 20 point standard for voting but these "up" and "down" arrows that are supposed to be there are no where to be found.

The threshold to create content and vote was raised to 100 points due to a recent invasion of idiots.

Thank you.

Thank you for the clarification, as I was searching high and low for this same information. Much appreciated!
Regarding the symbols next to the thread title, would it be possible to implement one that shows which threads I've posted in?
It seems like you're referring to MGoBoard using the link along the top banner. I don't know how to answer your question as it pertains to that link.
However, there is still a way to view just the threads you've posted in. Towards the top, left-hand side you'll see a link entitled "Recent Posts". This will initially display all recent posts on MGoBoard and in the Diaries. At the top of this list, there is a tab entitled "My Recent Posts". This will show you all the threads you've commented in.
P.S. - please don't let the kitty punch me.
Wow, I can't believe I never noticed that before. That's pretty much what I was looking for. Thanks!
Can you give urself points by clicking the up arrow?

Isn't that kinda like mastur....nevermind.

You were saying...?
I've been on MGoBlog for a while, but haven't commented at all. But now I need some information on Fan Day. So in lieu of a board entry (since I'm way short of 20 points), where can I find the information? I'd love to hear about others' experiences so I know what to expect.
Thanks, Terminate Carr. That was a big help.

Linebacker Quintin Tucker (6-2, 235) from San Diego (Calif.) Scripps Ranch is a player to watch this coming fall. He didn't get a chance to play a full season as a junior due to CIF transfer rules, but he was impressive. One of the strongest players in the country. Has a max bench press of over 405lbs. Played with Tate last season.

I don't want to go the full N00b, but what is the genesis of the name GERG for Greg Robinson. I apparently missed that bus.

Gerg makes reference to an ongoing EDSBS joke. Orson mistyped it, but found his failing to spell his name as bad as his job at Syracuse, if I read it correctly.
In addition to finding sudden joy in mistyping Gerg Robinson’s name, since “Gerg” seems like such a better nickname than any other we can make up, the long, painful, fat-man-tumbling-downhill decline of Syracuse is made all the more interesting for us as teams now seemingly out of league are now licking their chops at the prospect of playing the Orangemen.
As for Michigan being Gerg'd, read this.

Thanks.
Sheesh, that's unintentional comedy for ya...
Thank you for the clarification - I was curious about that myself.

Is there anywhere in the Account section to check your points and how you accumulated them?
