MGoBlog Football Pool Day 2

Submitted by jamiemac on
Ok, so that kinda got lost in the shuffle. Please stop me if this reaches anything close to Day 4 or something I think there is more interest than let on for a football here. I loved the feedback I got yesterday. Based on that what will do is a have a list a games, a fistful of MGoDollar$, and we'll pick games. But let's rehash some finer points of the ground rules. How many games should we be allowed to pick per week? Will there be a min or max bet? Should be include the whole betting board or do you like the idea of me hand selection a dozen games and using that as the pool to choose from? My thoughts are we need a limit on # of games played and some sort of max/min limit. And, I like the smaller pool of games. It force our hand a bit into more challenging picks. But I am open to any thoughts. AS OF NOW, I AM LOOKING AT FRIDAY MORNING TO LIST THE GAMES. So, we have a couple days yet to fine tune the rules.

everyone place their picks against the spread for every Top 25 game and Michigan and then to finally just pick one game a weak to wager MGoPoints with. You only get a certain amount of MGoPoints, with a set max bet of like 25% of your total points?

I brought the MGoDollar thing up because a few had mentioned it. Personally, I like the idea I proposed where you pick maybe 4-5 games, all for 1 point with the option of making one game a 2-pointer. We can increase those "stakes" at some point in the season. Bouje--I dont know about actual MGoPoints. I dont really control those, although I do have some basic mod powers here.

I meant MGoDollars personally I just really like the idea where you have a wide swath of games and then maybe you can make one your "money play" So Maybe do both. Have a subset of games for MGoDollars with max bet being 25% of your "stack" and then have another where you pick ATS all Top 25 games and whoever has the best record wins? I really like picking all top 25 games because that is what the Daily did and a lot of other newspapers so I always liked to kick their teeth in.

I worry that people will go all in or something right away and lose. Then they have nothing to gamble with the rest of the year. I am not likeing the fake dollar idea, the more I think about it.

I have always liked the way people do it where everyone has a record. Pick like ten games each week and if I get seven right I am 7-3. Week two I get two right, I am 9-11. You can vary this as well, have some games by the line, some games the outright winner, and if it is a big game make it a +1 in your correct column.

I don't always like doing the Top 25, half the games end up being whether or not you think team A is going to score 6 or 7 more touchdowns than their greatly inferior opponent that week. For example, I would include each of these games for this weekend, they are more fun to me. Toledo vs. Purdue Minnesota vs. Syracuse Baylor vs. Wake Forest Army vs. Eastern

That's the line for the game. It's the same as a -2 line. You should be able to bet each accordingly. (although generally it's easier because you just take the huge dog). But if REAL money was on the line I'd be betting the huge dogs every time. So I don't see why you want to leave these out.

I can see the points against the fake dollars thing, but I think it's worth trying something that isn't the way everyone else does it. We can all go to ESPN, SI.com, or wherever to do that. Someone could even make a mgoblog group on those sites. The concern about people going all in and busting is a good point that hadn't occured to me. I do think though that there should be some way to add more strategy into it than just picking winners. The problem with just doing a record is that people get too far behind and stop playing. I ran a pool for a few years on now defunct ncaarankings.com and by the end, only about 10% of the people were playing. Anyway... some ideas. 1. Jamie picks 5 good games and everyone gets 5 points per week. They can choose to bet them one on each game, or 3-1-1-0-0 or whatever combo they feel is prudent. Makes it a little more interesting. 2. Potentially to use in combination with 1, if you lose, you get negative. Doubles the range of scores (-5 to 5) and makes you think twice before throwing your points around. 3. Another addition, you don't have to use all five of your points each week. Say you only like the look of one game. You put two on it, and leave it at that. 4. At some increment (say every three weeks) you increase the amount of points per week each player has to bet. So say in October, you get 8 points to bet on the five games. I found this sort of thing helps because it gives people a chance to come back that get far behind and gives people a chance that don't get started until later. Anyway, those are some ideas. It would avoid busting, because you keep getting your points to bet each week, but you can dig yourself quite a negative hole.
