From watching the amazing U.S. women's gymnastics team last night, I started thinking about how much they have done athletically. To put in perspective, they've done more by 15 to 17 than we on this board ever will. However, that made me curious about our own personal accolades. I will start. I made the state cross country finals in high school, ran a 4:46 mile, and have 3 state wrestling titles as a coach. Let's hear yours!

Former XC and track runner, walked on to a DI program (not Michigan). Ran 4:30 in the mile, 26:40 in 8K XC, and 15:50 in the 5K. All New England XC runner in High School.

Compete in triathlons these days. Recently did 1:15 for a half olympic distance (800m swim, 20K bike, 5K run), but still a terrible swimmer. Any tips from the board on getting a half mile swim time down from 18 minutes to 13?

I swam for 4 years, but never distance but when it comes to swimming, good form/technique and lots of practice.  Making sure you have a good kick and you are properly getting the most out of each pull.  Strong upper body and core is never a bad thing either.

Never excelled at any one sport but I can put together a decent swim, bike, run.  I've raced as elite amateur for the Olympic distance, made USAT All American twice, and qualified for age-group nationals.  I qualified for the 1/2 Ironman (70.3) World Championships at my last 1/2 IM.  Missed qualifying for Ironman World Championships (Kona) by 1 spot last year at IM Canada... still working on that one.

all the way up to Senior year of highschool. Tore the crap out of two ligaments and over 70% of the cartilage in my left knee half-way through the season. I was leading the state of Indiana in tackles at the time and got an all-state honorable mention (Middle Linebacker). I would love to strap on a helmet one more time and knock the snot out of somebody. Go Blue!

I kicked a 30 yard field goal in a football game in 7th grade.
I scored 3 tries and made 3 conversion kicks in a rugby match my junior year of HS.
I scored 0 tries but broke my nose and finger and received a concussion my senior year. Quite a disappointing season I'd say.
I joined an untalented (me included) IM 4-on-4 indoor flag football team at GVSU yet made a deep playoff run using a read option offense.
I wish I was like you good-at-stuff guys :(

Bench warmer for my High School's Freshman basketball team, more assists and rebounds than points on the year (can you say team player).  Needless to say my basketball career didn't last long.

My senior class was 42-1 through four years of high school football. Runner up my jr year. State champs my Sr. Year. Couple of 2nd place finishes at State in track in the 4 by 1 and 4 by 8. Wasn't a stud by any means but I did score quite well with the ladies which is what really matters.

I won a National Championship in Division 3 baseball in 2006.

I hit a two run homerun in the National Title game to break the 0-0 tie. I also caught the last out of the game, a flyout to right.

I also knocked the bat boy's front two teeth out with the weighted bat before my first at bat that game. I felt god awful until I hit the 2 run jack!

Marietta College has the best baseball program in Division 3, and I would be willing to bet top 10 in the country.

I played football for a year and a spring there and got to play against against Pierre Garcon when he was at Mount Union. He was an absolute force in D-III to say the least. Also, Jason (?) Trusnik who was a DE at Ohio Northern who went on to be drafted by the Jets as a LB and was later traded to the Browns in the Braylon deal. I'm not sure where he's at now.

I was All-conference 1st team RB in high school, special mention All-District, team offensive MVP, and team captain. I had a stomach ulcer halfway into my senior season that put me in ICU for a week and kept me out of the 3 following games. The worst part was that it kept me under 1000 yards.

I was a high school swimmer and recruited to swim D-II in college.....by which I mean I got a fairly generic form letter from a tiny little school I'd never heard of whose swim program is now defunct, expressing interest and would I like to learn more about their program and so forth......and I didn't get it until October of my first year in college.

But that one letter lets me claim to have been "recruited to swim in college."  I think it was the same tiny West Virginia school where RR got his coaching start.

These days my athletic feats are limited to sailing.

Steve Bunin, now with the World Wide Leader, said my name during a highlight when he was working for WOTV and Wall2Wall Football. It was a regional final game and I caught a back half my size looking back for the ball. Honestly thought the guy was dead for a second. Went on to win a State title, back when they were played at the Silverdome.

I was on a dream team - I made the pick of the litter in a raft guide obstacle course. Of course, we were all sorta drunk, but we got to hurl small boats at each other and climb stacks of rafts while doing a throw bag toss (distance AND accuracy)...

When I was in high school and an avid follower of this blog I used my rudimentary video editing skills (they've since improved) to compile all of Sam McGuffie's hurdles into one video.

My athletic achievements were experienced viacriously through this young man and this video.

Played OL and threw shot and disc at Albion.  Rode the bench and had little to no involvement in the conference championships we won.  Rode the coattails of my talented track and field teammates into the HoF (as a team), but still got a plaque for it.

Can also say that I was on more teams than I can remember (football, basketball and track) w/ Congressman Runyan from 7th grade through through Varsity.  In a weird way, that's probably more memorable for me.

I won one high school state championship in football (1993) and two in lacrosse ('93 & '94), but these were back before lacrosse was an official MHSAA sport. All-state attackman my senior year. I was part of a great football team (undefeated, ranked #1 all year) whose QB was all-state, went to Illinois, but then flamed out spectacularly.

Rowed for a year in college and we won the Novice Eastern Sprints ('95). Club lacrosse after that along with lots of IM sports.

Perhaps my crowning athletic achievement came in medical school at Vanderbilt: 3 other med students and I (one had played DB at Stanford, another had played tennis at Cornell then Vandy) played in an open 4-on-4 flag football tournament and won, beating teams made up of Vanderbilt varsity football and basketball players along the way. We were invited to go to the SEC championships of this tourney in Atlanta, but alas, it was during our finals the next week, so we passed. Maybe it's better to end as a winner...

I was my school's #1 varsity golfer all 4 years of high school earning all conference 1st team my freshmen year, and conference MVP my last 3 years. I was offered a walk-on opportunity at U of M but I decided to focus on my studies. I also pitched for the varsity baseball team for all 4 years of high school, and I was on the varsity basketball team for 3 years.

WLB in a 3-4 - loved the blindside pass rush. Routinely lost contain on running plays. Blitzed when should have been in coverage. Got yanked regularly, but made some redeeming big plays - sacks, interceptions and forced fumbles. Scouting report was inconsistent and lackadaisical, always reads pitch on option and hangs ILB's and DT's out to dry.

In short, I was an idiot on the football field.  Would love to have that squandered opportunity back.

Neither went pro in hoops...Gaurded Chris Baker (Saline HS) and he gaurded me...was OK at hoops, but blocked one of my shots literally half way across the gym..."ooooohs" from the crowd.  Also gaurded Drew Henson both times we played Brighton and he got about 15 points each time.  Both players were 'good' at basketball, but running up and down the floor with them you realize what great athletes they were.

Oh and tackled Greg Degrand (Saline football, MSU wrestler) for a 7 yard loss my Junior year.

That pretty much sums up my highlight reel.

Played soccer through high school, pulled a rare double my sophomore year, won state championships for my high school and club teams. Then my senior year lost both state title games. Played with a couple high school all americans, one guy on my club team who went on to MLS as both a player and coach. Walked on and played with the UM soccer team my freshman year (back before it was a varsity sport) until I blew out my knee. then decided I had more important things to do, like drinking.

I played in the CHL for 4 years and was runner-up in the memorial cup my last year (and was the team captian that year).

Also won the High School AAA provincial championship (which is the highest level of competition in our system) in volleyball 2 of my 3 years in High School and was the starting power hitter for all three years. Went on to coach the volleyball team to a provincial title as well three years later (my first and only year coaching mens volleyball).

I played many other sports and won some awards, but those are the ones that stand out for me.

In Tae Kwon Do, I have won 34 state titles (3 events each tourney, competed for 8 years, competed in Ohio, Mich, Indiana, Illinois, and a few others, mainly Midwest). After state, you'd go to nationals that were held in various states. I'm a 3 time national champion. Also won a world championship held in 2004 in Colombus, Ohio. Many of my tourney trips in my later years were all expenses paid due to my winnings (cash prizes were given to older athletes).

I have competed in S. Korea & Dublin also.

Now, I teach martial arts for a living to over 500 ppl a week, ages 3-75+

No accomplishments worth mentioning here. But thanks to career choices and "going pro in something other than sports" after graduating from college, I've met numerous great athletes, many of them Hall of Famers or future Hall of Famers in their respective sports.

Went to a small high school that had all kinds of talent that coaches didn't know how to use or teach. Played 4 years and started 3, played at every skill position on offense except TE, played at all DB positions, kickoff, kick return, punt, punt return. Regionals in track, played basketball a couple years but quit since I didn't have the last name to suit the coaches. Walked on at Indiana State as a WR, but quit school after my freshman year. Played softball from my freshman year of high school until now, won 3 state titles in softball, numerous league titles, also 3 state titles in a league that's like YMCA basketball. Still have some good speed for a 35 year old who's knees and back aren't what they used to be. Now to fill my competitive nature I competition coonhunt in UKC and PKC.

I was:

A slow white safety who earned some attention from the local D-III program and some passing attention from a few very low end D-II schools.  Started two years of high school.  Our team stunk though and only had one winning season in four years.  My brush with fame was coming up to stop Chad Henne on a rollout.  Next thing I know a defensive tackle is hovering over me and going "You okay man?".  I was like "Where the hell did that pulling guard come from, fucker blindsided me." and the reply was "That was the QB man, he's fucking big."

Thrown off my high school hockey team for fighting and banned from league.  Ended up making the club hockey team.

Subpar swimmer.  Ever so often I managed to pull something out off my ass and win a heat but nothing beyond that.

Second board on my high school chess team.  This led to the amusing moment when the first board (a scrawny litlte nerd looking guy) was getting bullied and I went in to defend my teammate.  Two of my fellow football players (a lineman and a WR) followed me in.  Ended up having a scrum in the lunchroom.  Five bullies vs three jocks and a chess nerd.  End result was that the chess coach was livid and bitched me out for an hour.  The football coach told me I lived up the values he was trying to teach since I defended a teammate, but he still had to sit me for a game since the principal was "being tacky about it".  I did three days in school suspension for my role in the fight.  The rest of the football team was pissed that three of us missed a game and jumped the bullies after school.  There was a significant drop in lunch room bullying after that incident.

Went winless in three years of middle school basketball. Played varsity tennis all four years in high school, playing doubles. Had a decent junior year, made second team all-area. Our tennis team was just good enough to qualify for states, but not good enough to win any matches there.

Yeah, my athletic accolades are quite minimal.

Did cross country running in my senior year of high school, and went from an 18:17 5K to a 16:47 in one season.  Had a few D-III letters of interest come in and one D-II letter, but I decided to go to Michigan without being an athlete instead.

1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-District, 2nd Team All-State Linebacker in Ohio D1 and played D1 college football (nothing special there). Set all-time tackles record for high school team.

State runner up on 4x100 relay and state champ 4x400 relay.

Greatest sports "accomplishment" was playing against Charles Woodson for two years in high school when he was at Ross. He only had six TDs my sophomore year and five my junior year against us (four were from KR/PR, 2 were defensive, and five were as a RB/WR). Rob Lytle shook my hand after both games (he knew my dad from high school) and told me not to worry because Woodson will probably be in the NFL HOF some day. My day of vindication came when he chose to play for Michigan. Hated playing against him, but loved/love watching him play against everyone else.

I'll stick to high school and later:

Swimming - was an OK sprinter and backstroker - our 4x100 free relay was All-American my senior year.  Quit swimming when I went to U-M.

Rowing -- was OK in this.  I went to a prep school in Massachusetts, and we got our ass kicked at Interschols (2nd boat - 8), which was the big HS rowing championship in New England (Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester, MA).  The cox of our first boat coxed at Harvard, and numerous teammates rowed at Ivy League schools.

Water polo -- played my senior year in HS.  Loved it, and I think I would have done well had I played more.  I loved the physicality of the game, and it was nice that I could swim pretty fast.

Lacrosse -- played one season in HS before switching to crew.  Played a couple of seasons on the club at U-M (with JP when he played).  Highlights -- causing the Notre Dame GK to cough up the ball on a clear, and my teammate scored a goal from about half-field.  Scoring two goals and an assist in front of my parents at a game at West Virginia.

IM sports at U-M -- did everything, sucked pretty much, except for v-ball.  Loved playing v-ball, and played all the time.

Feats of Strength:

1.       Got dunked on by Rumeal Robinson at the CCRB once in pick up hoops.  We both went up for a rebound, our hands reached the ball simultaneously, but then my hands started plummeting to Earth as his just rose, and rose, and rose….  That kid’s vertical sang to me that I was a mere mortal.  I did score a few times, but yeah, outside mid-range jumpers and not while Rumeal was checking me…

2.       Played in several pick up games with Desmond Howard and Derek Alexander when they were Frosh/Soph and I tell you this – Desmond was completely unremarkable on the court.  Alexander however, was an absolutely ungodly beast.  Desmond would throw Alexander alley oop passes and Alexander would launch from what seemed like the free throw line, catch and dunk with such ferocity, his body would almost disappear behind the backboard as it swung around while he hung onto the rim.  Fiercest UM dunker I ever saw until C Webb arrived on campus.  Desmond’s hoops game was very average.  I didn’t even know who he was at the time.

3.       Turned down the UM rowing and volleyball teams because hey, they weren’t varsity sports, and who the hell would want to get up at 5 in the morning hung over to go row in Michigan winter weather?

4.       Won the Mr. Greek Week award for (no joke) balancing a tricycle on my head.  Somewhat athletic no?

5.       After graduating, my feats of strength diminished, but I was particularly proud of when, after losing a game of squash, I hot-boxed four 90 year old alums in the elevator of the Harvard Club in NYC so rancidly one proclaimed “Meee Oh Myyyy!”

6.       I did 33 pull ups when I was 33.  Legit, wide arm, open hand pull ups going all the way down and up.

7.       I did 23 legit pull ups at 43… (aaah the joy of aging).
