MGoAirplay beta testing

Submitted by karpodiem on

I posted a thread on this a few months ago, but I've expanded on a few features/have a wordpress blog up now, and wanted to share with the mgoboard a few things I have in store for this upcoming season.

In the past I've posted some games on MGoVideo; one of the issues with bittorrent though is that for 'normal' people, the concept of downloading and managing torrents is a bit confusing (I know, easy for most people on this board but yes, there are people out there who don't know about bittorrent/want a simpler delivery mechanism)

For this to work, you'll need an iOS device running 4.x firmware, an Apple TV (the black hockey puck sized version that came out last year). All devices need to be on the same wifi network.

If you navigate to mgomat.com on your iOS device, you'll see two videos embedded. When you click the video, it will start to buffer; give it about 15 seconds, and then tap the video again. Click the icon in the right hand corner and select the Apple TV to output the video to your Apple TV. I've embedded a video below.

You can expect the games this Fall to be posted on mgomat.com in this format by midnight on Saturday (directly after the game is over) so that you can enjoy/lament what happened just a three/six hours earlier. Timely posting has been an issue in the past; I can assure you that the resources have been gathered to get the games up by midnight that Saturday, at the latest. No other site will be able to compete with that speed ;)

Anyways, check out mgomat.com and feel free to test the two videos I have posted (ND and Iowa from last year). Oh, and one more thing - the reason I posted the Iowa game is that I wanted to demonstrate that this can do 60 frames per second (NBC is 30fps, ABC/ESPN/BTN are 60FPS). (YouTube highlights are all 30fps, and this is something that will not be change anytime soon)

Bah, embed isn't working. link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpbVz9GcpY4

It's something I've wanted to do for a very long time, but after extensive testing, it's just not possible to scale to the level that would be necessary.

I can do 50 users streaming at a time, but anything above that gets exponentially more difficult.

Awesome.  Pure awesome.  Thank you so much.

Not to put a damper on the party, but will there be issues with copyright here? Regardless, I will be using it weekly, at least.

EDIT: I'm probably an idiot, but you can't just watch the videos on a computer?

Can i watch these videos on my computer and what do I need to be able to?  I am one of the readers you mentioned that this is difficult for.

I'm  little confused, but that's OK.  I've been streaming games here in Korea for the past few years.  I've downloaded a couple games here via torrent.  Another option is always a bonus.  Not sure what'll be best yet but am willing to wait and see.

Thanks for helping folks like us who are computer-bound when watching UM.

What I'm confused about is the Apple TV, iOS - which I don't have.  But testing the video - it is buffering for me now - I am unable to watch while buffering.  However, after about 7 minutes, I'm at 42%.  (I'm assuming the video will work when 100%, yes?)  Would the buffering download time be ridiculously longer in-season with so many others grabbing the video feed?

WOW, nice quality!  I'm still wondering how long the buffering download might take in season?  It took only about 10 minutes or so today for me to play.

So you're saying that this will be up "directly" after the game is over.. or by midnight?

I ask for specifics b/c I might not watch the game live but rather watch it with my sons.  I often watch streams around 4am in Korea.  But it sounds like I could watch it around noon on Sunday (Korea time) and be able to watch it for the first time with my sons!  Awesome!

Are you using Google Chrome? If not, what web browser? Hopefully you are seeing the html5 version and not the flash one. Right click the video; does it say flash or html5?

Midnight that Saturday. So for a Noon game in Ann Arbor, they will be up by midnight that evening (9 hours after. I live in Ann Arbor)

Late reply - sorry - Korean time.  Google Chrome, yes.  When I right click it doesn't say flash or html5, but that's likely b/c I don't know what other option to choose (DivX, full screen mode, windowed mode, preferences, and updates - none of these tell me flash/html5).

However, after downloading, it works great, so thanks.

um... one last question....

Will this be available to EVERY UM game?  I ask b/c if I wait to watch it but then find it ain't there that particular week agains MAC school, that would be rather overwhelmingly disappointing.

Again, thanks!

Also, I should mention - If you don't have an iOS device to stream the game instantly, you can download the game directly from a link I'll provide. The game will take an hour or so to download, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Once you have the game saved to your computer, you can then drag and drop it into iTunes. Once it's in iTunes (which is available for Mac and PC, and the same on both operating systems), you can click 'Play' and then press the airplay button again to send it to your Apple TV.

For $99 the Apple TV is a great device that will make it very easy for you to watch games on your HDTV this Fall.

Here's a video demo of putting the video into iTunes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZXFTPV1HKg

pretty good.  I tried it last night and am impressed by the results.

Moreover, frustrated with how much cable costs compared to how little I watch it, I cut the cord earlier this year.  Apple TV fills the gap, bringing movies and shows through iTunes and Netflix.  Now, I am completely thrilled to that I'll be able to get the football games too.

And, cutting the cord paid for the Apple TV in less than two months.
