MGoAdvice on car subwoofers

Submitted by B Edwards 17 on

I want to put some subs in my Toyota Sequoia but I don't know what exactly to put in it because I know nothing about car audio. I have been thinking about 2 12" subs but the guys at Best Buy said that would be too much. I like to listen to rock/rap/hip hop so I was just wondering if there are any car audio gurus out there that can help a fellow Wolverine out?

If this is your first set up I say one 12 will do. I have one 12 FG and its more then loud enough for me. I have been into car audio since about 00. If it really isn't enough(which it will) then buy another.

2 12" subs will drown out just about everything else in the song unless you turn the bass way down, then what's the point? you could probably be happy with one 12 inch (that's what she said blah blah). JL Audio subs will give you good bump for your buck. speaker problems are going to come more from underpowering than overpowering your subs so you ideally want to have an amp with at least twice as much power as your sub(s).

Umm, what you're probably going to want to do is a Single 12", ported box and a monoblock amp. You're going to need about two 15-20 feet cables for your power and your ground. You're going to need another 15-20 feet remote cable, this is what turns the amp on and off. You're also going to need some RCA cables, again 15-20 feet long because they have to reach from your trunk to your headunit, and you're going to need a fusebox that goes between the AMP and the batter on your power cable.

Now if you're looking at getting a great system for a cheap price, I'm selling mine right now with everything you need.

12" Alpine Type R
850W RMS Monoblock Kenwood AMP
Ported Box
150Amp KnuKoncept Fuse Box
And all the wiring you'll need except for the RCA's.

I'm selling it for $200. All this stuff together is retail for over $400.

You could do one 12" but I would recommend JL Audio 10w7 (10inch) or one 12W7 (12inch). You cant go wrong with one of those. (http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=5) is the site for the 10inch one. One of those subs will work and then make sure you get an amp that matches the RMS voltage of your sub. Also if your going to just power your subs with an amp make sure you get a mono block (one channel=one output) amp. I have a 02 Trailblazer and have one JL Audio 10w7 with a 500/1 slash (500 RMS, one channel amp) JL amp. and people inside my house can hear my car in the driveway because a lot of things in the house vibrate. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Yes, there are many combinations that can and will work together. Dont listen to the comment about how you should get an amp that doubles the max power your sub can handle. This is completely untrue and im not sure why it was said. Its pretty simple. rca's and remote from headunit to amp, power from amp to battery, ground from amp to your grounding point. Putting an inline fuse on your power will help protect your amp from being burnt up. The ground should never be smaller in gauge than the power. Also, its very important to use a very short ground. i never surpass 2ft personally. Once your all set up, you can adjust your system with the high and low pass knobs on your amp. Low pass up with high pass down means it'll be all bass and visa versa. Also, a toggle switch on your remote is a good idea.It makes turning the amp off easy and if your listening to talk radio for example, the amp isnt needed. Hope this helps some.

That still runs you into the problem i was refering to. If you wanted to listen to a talk radio show, you would have your amp and subs playing them talking. With a toggle, you can shut the sub and amp off so you can still listen to things with your regular speakers.

As for the op, its a subjective thing. People have different opinions on whats best. Names like kenwood, JL, kicker, etc are all safe bets.
