MGo rumor starting: 97.1 the Fan

Submitted by Duck4President on

Columbus radio station 97.1 the Fan is actually reporting the "rumor" that Tressel will be hired by MSU. They cited the source of the rumor as a Michigan website. This was on the Common man show; which was previously Common Man and the Torg, before "the Torg" got fired for threatening Desmond.

I know, I know Columbus radio sucks. But beyond that, I thought this was relevant with respect to this blog's interest in the whole blogs vs mainstream media argument. Not only are they reporting unverified second hand information, but second hand information coming from an anonymous message board poster (not to drag you over the coals again Ball Hawk).

Swan Flu actually got quoted on the air as well: "It can't be Tressel, because I heard from a reliable source that Jon Gruden already accepted the position".

Commence Columbus radio sucks attacks/jokes...

They aren't reporting it as fact, just gave the context of the rumor.  Still funny to know that they drop in on this site from time to time.  I always had a feeling that they got material from here.

Aside from the whole Buckeye fan thing, Common Man is a really good sports talk host.  I think the show took a downward turn when it got popular, as they lost some authenticity trying to be caricatures of themselves to boost ratings.  When the Torg was on, though, they were one of the most listened to sports radio teams in the nation.

Agreed. Common Man and the Torg was one of the funniest/entertaining sports-talk shows I've ever listened to. And honestly, most of the time they weren't even that homerish. It's gotten worse in both ways since the Torg was canned. Jonathan "T-bone" Smith is a major homer whose favorite things are Brady Hoke fat jokes and worshipping everything Buckeye. He's the worst thing that's happened to the show.

Please tell me we deleted that rumor? Unh we didn't -- doing that now.

The #1 thing the university gets pissed at us for is stuff readers put on the board that we miss.

That's a crappy job of reporting on their part to not know the difference between something someone puts on a message board and a rumor.

You guys have a weird position in sports media.

On one side, you are pretty mainstream, having access to a lot inside stuff due to the site and posting a lot of good topics that pertain to Michigan spors.

On the other, you run a highly speculative message board that routinely has posters swooning over OMG shirtless! pics of recruits and using phrases like "XYZ just committed to Michigan.  Yummy!" while posting pictures of Kate Upton dancing around.

That's a pretty wide gap to reconcile.

You know you've made it when the University notices when your crazy-ass followers say stuff. I don't envy you; balancing the "Y U NO remove ridiculous rumors?" calls from the University and the "Y U BE BOARD NAZI THIS IS AMERICA" calls from your customers.

This is insane.  Some guy posts a message about an alleged rumor about a Tressel getting a job and they get chastized.  Meanwhile, millions of people document my alleged handling of six, I mean, five prostitutes and I have to spend tens of thousands getting it removed.  There is something seriously unjust about this.

ReWhen it was mostly just brian. The day when you have to shape this site to bend over for the powers that be at the U is a sad day.

I understand the relationship with these people can affect revenue stream, but grow some balls boys. How the hell does a rumor about tressels career opportunity hurt anyone

This just shows how difficult it can be to fill hour after hour of sports talk radio with relevant or even intereresting information. Sports talk radio can become almost unspeakably inane when football season ends.

Isn't this the same piece of shit station where one of their on-air "talents" said they hope Desmond Howard dies because he ruins college gameday?

Dude was probably still emptying his diaper from when Desmond did play here since Michigan went 4-0 in that period.

I was at a meeting last night with Dantonio's brother, Frank.  He didn't know anything about Tressel to MSU.  He texted one of Marks kids, who didn't know anything about Tressel to MSU.  Not sure why he didn't just text Mark.  Anyhow, the folks down here are real interested in this story, would easily root for the comeback of the senator.  They ain't playing Sparty for two years.  Also, Go Blue tonight against Ohio hockey!  Anyone else going?

I was in an insider meeting last night with the voices in my head.  They confirmed to me that Dantonio wanted a decided schematic advantage over Michigan, and hired Charlie Weiss.  Those voices are never wrong, so BKFinest it.

Holy crap, lol.  That is incredibly irresponsible reporting.

Just another stake in the coffin of journalism and 97.1 "the fan" should be embarrassed for using a blog as a source.  Just like others who cite Twitter or that time the Freep cited RCMB for their Pro Combats, these people should be ashamed.

Even if it happens and Tressel was hired, which I can't believe is a real possibility, they should not be citing mgoblog as a source of information to break the story on their show.

I was at a meeting in Columbus two days ago with Gene Smith and a few deep-pocketed boosters. The message the boosters gave to Smith was clear: get Luke Fickell back at the helm of the program before Urban quits in August to avoid tarnishing his 12-0 record as Ohio's coach.

You heard it here first. DIABEET it.

Quick.  Somebody post a rumor that Urban Meyer is going to announce his retirement from coaching football after the 2013 season to pursue a career in his favorite sport - curling.

What you are saying is that crazy rumors we post here get announced on the radio in Columbus?  Well, I am just glad that no one here would ever take advantage of that by creating crazy, baseless rumors just to screw with Buckeye fans.

I heard from an insider that there was a big wig meeting at McDonald's today and that during it, Ronald Mcdonald, The Grimace, the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese made a serious push to make the McRib a permanent menu item. Fingers crossed!
