Dave Brandon > Gene Smith
Meyer Press Conference Open Thread
Gene Smith is probably gone soon. He basically had no involvement in recruiting Meyer to ohio.
Hopefully Meyer doesn't fire Gee on his first day.
I dunno, that would work just fine for me . . . .
Smith said Meyer "gets it" twice.
"He gets it." I burst out laughing.
This is the strangest presser I've ever seen.
Their media is a bunch of panzies compared to what our coaches have had to deal with. Just lobbed him a bunch of softballs.
They should have asked him about the reaction of UF fans thinking he's abandoned them to go to another program. They should have also asked him about all the arrests that happened under his watch at UF.
12. Ohio State will commit to working with Coach to create the Urban Meyer Fellowship for Ethics and Leadership in Sports for one or more students at The Ohio State University. Coach agrees to teach and support the fellowship initiative and work with the University to secure additional financial support to endow this initiative.
Fellowship for Academic Leadership and Sports Ethics, or FALSE for short.
I did not even see that but such a complete title for him.
There's a saying one of my professors always used when he finished a story, "If it isn't true, it should be." That's this.
Great timing huh ? lets change the subject off that 40-34 heart breaker ASAP
And distract from the first ever Big Ten Championship Game that two other programs will duke out.
I'm suprised they didn't announce it a half-hour after the game. Or even during it.
The NCAA's Sword of Damocles over the athletic program is an added plus.
Bonus points if they actually take away more schollies/postseason ban.
Especially if their last name is Woodson. Or Manningham. Or Koger, or Toussaint, or Kalis, or Strobel...
Michael Taylor (Bo's last QB, holds school record for passing efficiency)
Garland Rivers (All-American DB, fyi)
...had 31 players from Ohio, if you include the freshmen.
Zoltan Mesko? There's only one Space Emperor
Elvis Grbac, plus current starters Jake Ryan, Kovacs, Omameh, kinda Jibreel Black, in addtion to those already listed.
Not too inspiring there Urbs...really couldn't memorize any of it?
Does anyone have a link?
He doesnt look to healthy...
Health-wise question asked
"I feel fantastic"
"I'M CONVINCED I WAS DONE COACHING"
I never thought this before (probably didn't think too much about him before) but I think he comes across as disingenuous, at best, and all out liar, at worst.
Urban talk just watching him answer questions all I could think was LIAR! It has nothing to do with how he left Fla with his supposed health issues. Just looking at him and the way he carries himself and his expressions answering questions just get that feeling.
"There's nothing broke at OSU"
Yes. He gets it.
of isolated incidents is not indicative of a problem. It's not like there was repeated conduct by some players, or several players availing themselves of the same illegal benefits or coverups/whitewashes/baldfaced lying denials/kangaroo investigations or anything.
he meant to say "no one's broke at OSU"
I didn't expect him to have a full staff in place yet, but I thought he might at least introduce a grad assistant or two.
Adam Sandler will be retained.
Urban sounds like he does research the same way that Pryor did
Urban's first mistake: "I have great trust in our athletic director and president." Fear level: 0. This man is a fool.
Gene Smith: "I trust our student athletes."
A bit less trust and a bit more attention to compliance would do them a world of good.
Nearly 20 minutes into the pressed no mention of Michigan
Meyer does not get it
would be OK with me
Hey dumbass it's called The Game, not "the big game." This guy doesn't get it.
in the Pac-12 now?
Saying he's from "Bucknuts.Com" must make that dude feel like an idiot.
If he's not embarrassed by that, then what will embarrass him?
that bozo gets airtime all season long on TV here as an osu "expert."
I went to high school with him! He is in my fantasy football league! He is a homer in the media but a good guy
I went to high school with him! He is in my fantasy football league! He is a homer in the media but a good guy
guy for us non watching folks? Jeesh!
What on earth is he talking about with this "center field" business?
Fogerty fan - I think he was making suggestions for new 'shoe RAWK music.
He says research a lot. Wonder if he researched.
Does anyone else feel like this is an extremely underwhelming conference? He doesn't even seem excited to be there. It doesn't look like he's trying to inspire new confidence in a fan base that had a rough year.
he thinks he doesnt have to " Hey I am Urban FREAKIN Meyer" you should be excited I'm here.
He left college football because of what he saw was happening? Are you sure it wasn't because of a 30+ criminal charges against his own players including the one that ended in a player committing suicide? This guy is a joke but I can't wait until Michigan beats the scarlet and gray right out of his sweater
Especially at ohio!!!
holy shit somebody is down
Where's his sweatervest?
Not a good sign when someone goes down in your introductory presser.
He looks really concerned about whoever just asked for EMS...
No mention of Michigan. This is a coach that "Gets It'? This is not going well to start off for them.
EMS to the back? Some foreshadowing?
Did Urban have another heart attack????
They called an EMS to the room -- no, it's not for Urban, but good guess.
Is going on in the back? Did Jim Tressel try to fight his way to the podium?
edit: I hope everyone is ok.
Did someone just keel over, and Urban respond by joking and saluting a buddy in the crowd?
is it just me, or does he seem extremely arrogant? It sounds to me like he thinks he can come from the SEC and have no trouble dominating in the Big Ten..
If you don't think you can win, then you can't handle the job.
Somebody needs medical attention and you smile and say "what's up J5?" Really?
Discussing Michigan now
It it just me, or is Meyer throwing out a lot of innuendo? Miller is a "good looking" young quarterback, and Meyer can't say in polite company how excited he is to be coaching him. Also, his strategy is to "go hard."
Oh shit, he just talked about getting his hands on him. Twice.
I bet they don't make shirts about Urban Meyer's press conference.
Someone find out how long it took Brady to mention OSU.
2 min and 40 sec
Shane is gonna be a LEGEND!! Love this kid......no homo.
Can't wait for this kid to hit campus.
I keep reciting "Morris hands off to Dunn..." or better yet "Morris going deep...gotta maannnn...got him! Stefon Diggs! (in Musburger voice)" in my brain.
A man can dream...
I thought Urban would be a guy that I would have a much harder time disliking, but seeing him in front of the Ohio logo definately does it for me.
Love that kid.
Does anyone get the feeling...that he left Florida because he was frustrated with LSU, Auburn and Alabama?
He seems like he wants to say "they were cheating!!!"
what's his point?
"OSU, why not us" ..... yet?
a few Rivals. And let me tell you the UAB game is "THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME ON THAT SCHEDULE"!
Hmmmmm who cut the transmission right when they asked him about the significance of the Michigan game??? Michigan hackers 1 Meyer/OSU 0...
(as viewed on the WBNS livestream - did same thing happen on BTN?)
What a TERRIBLE press conference. I'm not being a homor when I say Hoke's was 10000 times better!
Even Joe Schad said he sounds nervous. He dropped his paper (that he was reading straight from without eye contact) and he's been stumbling and stammering.
(stuck in cbus commuter traffic) I thought Urban was pounding the podium, only to find out later that was when he dropped his papers. Biggest excitement of the evening were the calls for EMS, then The Fan guys broke in to comment on things while they waited for that to be sorted out. They, too, were asking why he hadn't yet mentioned Michigan...which he was just as they went back to the Fawcett Center.
Twice, he claimed he learned his lesson and won't "overwork" himself anymore. He claimed that he can balance family and work now, that he won't get too overzealous at his new job
Lets hope that's true. It's sad to say, but these days, a coach that isn't giving 100% isn't going to win.
"No weapons, no drugs, no violence" is a core value to Urban. LOL
Must be a new thing...halol.
"You can stop ridiculous athletes by loading up."
How'd that work for your new DC this past Saturday? 5 TDs
Gator tears are filling the streets here in Florida. Not a fan of Urban but it's entertaining to watch this meltdown from my front door. Also, dude seems like a douche to me. I'm gonna say he downtown poundtown'd that grad assistant back in gainesville.
I grew up in FL and now im hearing all of my UF friends' anger over the situation. I'm thoroughly enjoying the UF schadenfreude.
It's glorious. For as obnoxious as that fan is I'm not sure there's a larger fairweather fanbase out there. The chatter about UF Football is all but dead down here. The UF/FSU game was almost under the radar to anyone not affiliated with the schools.
I live in Florida, too, surrounded by Gator fans. It's been a bit surprising to realize just how fair-weather many of them can be. I'm good friends with a family of previously hard-core Gator fans, and this season they don't even watch the games. It seems like a lot of them have just given up on the team... and yet they're upset about Urban Meyer "giving up" on them. Go figure.
I've not noticed the same thing about Gator Fans around me....but there is always that bandwagon faction here in Florida that went from the U, to FSU, to UF depending on who was dominant. Any ways, I remember in 92/93 stores acrossed the street (High St.) from campus in Columbus displaying/selling Michigan gear in their front shop windows. During the Cooper years, Ohio fans in Florida were very rare...now they are everywhere.
A solid quote from a Gator: "On the bright side, maybe we can have ESPN rooting for us to come back like Michigan". I've also seen quite a few peaple post "Go Blue!" so would seem some of Gator Nation is rooting for us.
Sorry, I meant details about the affair with his graduate assistant. I tried googling for it and didn't find a lot.
Ah, the rumor going around was that he was sleeping with a grad assistant in the athletic department. His wife found out and gave him the ultimatum between his job or his family. Seems clear which he chose. The consensus down here was that he used his medical history as a scapegoat to cover that whole mess up. It was primarily word of mouth so I don't know if you'll find a legit article about it. I have seen it mentioned on this site a few times though.
On PTI just now, they had a topic about Urban Meyer becoming the new coach. They start the 1 minute 15 second segment by Wilbon calling Urban sneaky and even lying for the last week about the job. Then they spend the next 1 minute and 10 seconds talking about ... LSU and Bama and the general college football landscape. Ohio getting what they deserve, lack of respect.
Urban Meyer: "Remember when I boned that chick in Florida and my wife made me quit. That won't happen again."
Press: "How do you know?"
Urban Meyer: "You live here. You've seen the girls in Ohio."
Just ask Shelly
Is he talking about cheating on his wife when he mentions the stupid mistakes he made at Florida?
Hey, this guy is going to be pretty easy to hate. Seems arrogant as hell.
Honestly, the number one thing Les Miles has going for him at LSU is that Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino and (previously) Urban Meyer were such colossal douchebags that it was fairly easy to land recruits who would prefer to be around somebody fun who doesn't think the football program is all about himself.
Though Hoke and Miles are two very different people, I think Hoke's personality and being a players' coach is the number one advantage Michigan will have in recruiting in the years ahead. Well, that and Greg Mattison.
...before he left town in the 90s. He might not think a program is all about himself, but he definitely has some jackass in him.
But not toward his most highly touted recruits (he screws over three star guys all the time, as is well-documented). Co-workers, other coaches, administrators -- he pisses them off all the time. Not his players.
Urban Meyer said his dream job was Notre Dame...at least according to Wiki.
I have never seen so many softball questions in my life and Urban is stammering. Hoke got grilled and thrived.
Gene Smith did not smile once when talking about his new coach?
It's probably his last action as athletic director...how do you expect him to feel?
It is because he basically had no part in recruiting Urban to ohio.
It's almost like they are asking questions that they expect to get Hoke-like answers from. So far, he's not doing such a great job.
I detest any woman that purses her lips like that in a picture.
Let alone the shirt.
I detest any woman who kills her kid because she wants to party. But the lips thing is also annoying.
Urban's new graduate ass istant.
esseeeseee speeed question. great.
esseeeseee speeed question. great.
Ess Eee Cee speed.
At Ohio even the pressers are slow.
My god he's putting down the B1G right now. Bud, there are numerous other ways to say things - like "I'm going to make it my business to do everything I can to make the Big 10 the greatest conference in the country."
Things we've learned:
1.) He coached in the SEC.
2.) Go hard. Whatever that means.
3.) Gator for life? Doesn't get it.
4.) Most importantly... His wife's name is Shelly.
"We'll always run the I-formation... just out of some different formations" derp.
I think that is a ploy to keep Brionte Dunn. What a huge liar he is.
Eh. It's the B1G. He's got old school peeps to appease. But don't believe him. He'll do what he knows.
That was as boring as an Indiana off-tackle play.
Moral of the story:
Hoke uber alles.
This pretty much says it all:
"Congratulations for Ohio State for their new hire. However, I have been waiting for over 2 days to watch the Purdue vs. Coppin State game. Can’t you reschedule our game so we can watch that, too?"
Extremely boring presser. He probably would rather fly to Columbus than walk.
The man doesn't get it!
I don't think anything is broke in the setting of an NCAA committee on infractions that has yet to rule? This is laughable. If this BS, coupled with allowing the cheater to address the team Saturday doesn't indicate how lightly they view this, the NCAA is more f'd up than I think!
The NCAA is a joke, Ohio State isn't going to get penalized too bad. HOWEVER, I remember reading that Urban was not a fan of Gene Smith, so I'm expecting a resignation from him in the coming weeks.
He basically said that he isn't going to bother dealing with players being in the wrong places, agents, drugs. He is going to to be "center focused". Fantastic.
Is it only me, or do the Ohio reporters all sound like rednecks from down South? I guess, they are rednecks.
one of the most sterile I have seen. It's like they were going thru the motions. No passion. Brady won me over at his presser. I wasn't so sure about him before. After his PC, I would have run thru a wall for him. Would you do that for Meyer after seeing that POS presser? Thank God for Brady Hoke!
Agreed, it was real deadpan, with the exception of the camera girl passing out. Pretty boring conference.
took a non-AQ team to a BCS bowl and won it. I would have run through the wall for him before the presser. Brady needed the presser to convince people to go all "balls through the wall" for him. So no need for Urban to have to "win the presser".
The difference is that Brady needed to sell himself, Meyer is already the savior of their program a week before he even signs.
Tattoos are OK.
OSU truly has their man.
as it's not in a "loaned" car.
Are they? Last time I checked, the last U of M player to try a DUI on for size got slapped with a full year suspension by Hoke. You may want to revaluate that statement.
Will we know who's coming in as DC and OC? Has this already been discussed in the presser?
Check out this thread at the Gainesville Sun. The article is nothing special; you may want to just skip down to the comments.
That's a lot of anger. Maybe Urban should stay out of that state for awhile and let his assistants do the recruiting down there.
"Gator Nation is angry enough today to download the Michigan fight song as a ring tone."
I'm totally a homer and programmed to hate the guy and compare him unfavorably to Hoke. So I'm going to hate the guy and compare him unfavorably to Hoke.
I don't see much passion in him. It's not clear if he has such a low opinion of the Big Ten why he wants to coach there instead of the vaunted ess eee cee with their ess ee cee speed. He didn't talk much about Ohio State's history and tradition, except, oddly, citing the ineligible 2011 Sugar Bowl team as an example of the essseeeesseee speeeeed that he'd like to see in the Big Ten. He didn't really talk much about the kids at all that he has an impact on except as recruiting targets. He didn't really talk about Michigan at all, which I find odd. He seemed to see the rivalry as something that existed between two people, Bo and Woody, rather than two schools, Michigan and Ohio State.
The guy has won two national championships and coached maybe the greatest college football player of the past 20 years, so he can say pretty much whatever he wants and OSU fans will still love it.
Pretty much agree with everything here. Bill Lumberg is more exciting than this guy. Boy are they going to miss JT.
One would think OSU will be losing scholarships in 2013 and perhaps a one year bowl band while on probation for the next 5 years.
Meanwhile, coach Hoke will be placing Michigan in high gear and we could dominate this series for the next 3 to 4 years. If Urban fails to defeat Michigan after 2 or 3 years he will really start feeling the stress from OSU fans.
He is a good coach but I don't get him saying he will not be putting in 100 percent, so that he can spend more time with his family. As a coach of a major program you better put all you got into your program.
It will be interesting to see how this works out for OSU.
Slap in the face of the NCAA
I still think he will be limited more than he researched. How funny
I would we worried if I were an OSU fan. This guy did nothing to try and excite the fan base. Their fan base is down and needs something uplifting. He was a downer. As an M-man, I'm happy. Going for 2 in a row!
Honestly, I don't think their fans actually care what he said or how he said it. As far as they are concerned, he could have just sat there and they would have been elated at the mere fact he is going to be on their sideline.
My friend texted me during the presser and said "Dude, I'm getting goosebumps." Leads me to believe that their emotions were pre-determined...they were going to get excited regardless of whether Urban silently ate a ham sandwich or whether he did the entire choreography of Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Maybe it's the hangover from Tressel and his robotic responses?
After that presser, I'd call him an accountant.
Agreed...My biggest worry is not the addition of Meyer, but the fact that Ohio will just throw money at the other 9 positions (save Fickell) and get some really good coaches in there. I've always thought that the sum of the OC and DC is greater than the HC. Fortunately Fickell stays on as DC, unfortunately Bollman is out.
After that presser, I'd call him an accountant.
You can't write this folks.
Clarrett was innocent! Meyer loves a clean crime free program. Tattoos are bullshit. The players were eligible. The NCAA should have stopped them. Tressell was an honest clean guy and did not speak to the team Friday, which would be another violation. I have a 12 inch cock.
And all college kids drive Escelades
Anybody think Urban might make a run at Demar Dorsey?
I missed the press conference but i had my wife record it and when i was watching it I hear Urban Meyer say is is and will always be a Gator, I wonder how the Ohio fans will take that? Also, that was just a horrible horrible press conference, he was so bad he made someone have a heart attack (at least that what I was told by a friend)
This thread is 100% win. Michigan fans have a wit to their comments that evokes a charm that escapes the whole of the Ohio fanbase. They still pat themselves on the back for scUM.
Can we please call Urban Meyer scUM? Nawww....
just watched the presser, all i gotta say is: what a tool bag. Urban is the anti-Brady Hoke. Can't believe he told the press that Florida was his dream job, and mentioned that he'll always be a gator. i'd much rather have a coach that has the love for the program that Brady does, one that says he would have walked from California to AA for the job (and I believe that he literally would have!) not to mention, Urban bored me to death during his presser, while Brady was up there pounding the podium, making up words, hollerin...... THIS IS MICHIGAN FERGODSAKES!
Not sure Urban is gonna add much to the Rivalry, other than being a good coach & recruiter. He just doesn't have the passion.
