META/OT: Epic Stupid NSFW Post

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, this post is to comment on my last mgoblog offering. On Saturday night, I put up a really, really stupid post about NSFW pics. FYI, I did read (and see) most of the responses. Many made me smile, a few made me laugh, a handful made me cringe and want to go hide. I do have a sense of humor. The series of pics of euphenisms was really good. A lot of posts were funny, but some of you guys can be pretty mean. That's ok, you've gotta have a thick skin in this place.

But there's no hiding. Have you ever done something epically stupid, realize it, and it isn't something you can undo? I'm that guy. Don't be that guy. Cause some things, you just don't ever live down. I'm debating abandoning "StephenRKass" and finding a nice, anonymous generic Michigan-Sports-Related username. We'll see.

Speaking of identity, my avatar is a photo of my wife. I always thought it was a nice pic. Thankfully, nothing like the photo someone posted of singer Mama Kass. I'm also contemplating finding a replacement avatar of a nice helmet or Denard striking a Heisman pose or a Block M or something Michigan sports related to use as a less personal avatar.

I remember while a student at Michigan, using reverse psychology to goad one of my roommates into doing something either really stupid, or that I happened to want him to do. That was not my intent with my Sat. night post, but boy, that's what happened.

Regarding my family, I'm not naive. There are all kinds of things out there, and that's ok. When we lived in Vienna, the billboards and the public pools and the unisex locker rooms were more open-minded than what we're used to here in the States. We all did just fine. My wife isn't insecure, after all, she looks better than just about anyone her age we run into. As a former model, she's seen and experienced a lot.

As to my original post, this is Brian's blog. And yours. Post what you want. Write what you want. Use the language you want. Brian and the moderators can decide what they deem acceptable or not. On this whole topic, there is an old post on Official mgoblog pet peeves some of you may want to read. But here is the pertinent section:

It's a picture of boobies!
Ever open a fifteen-post thread at work and get two different 800x600 pictures of impossibly fake boobs alternating for pages and pages? And then have your boss walk up behind you? Thanks, internet hero, for turning my idle surfing of a sports site into a firing offense! No one needs to see the same set of fake gazongas eighty times accompanied by your three words of deep insight into the team of your choice.

EXAMPLE
Go to Rivals and click on a thread.

DIAGNOSIS
Person is fourteen and has a constant boner. Likely to turn into a guy who says "stud" constantly after being rejected by women for the next ten to eighty years.

CURE
An introduction to life's harsh realities, hopefully beginning with a slap upside the head.

SUSCEPTIBLE FANBASES
Anybody with a site on Rivals.

EXCEPTIONS
Arguments about hot chicks are always welcome as long as denoted in the subject title and the specific purpose of a thread. Also exempt are pictures of Scarlett Johansson.

So, my issue isn't language. I don't care what words you use, or speak with, or write. After all, a post that repeats "F***" a hundred times, I can just skip over. My issue isn't sexy avatars. As others have noted, some of them are distracting, but that's ok. My ONLY issue is LARGE photos in the middle of threads, which are embarassing with my secretary, or wife, or kids. Yeah, I can cope with it, but I really don't want to. Actually, the worst one isn't my nine year old son, it's my 17 year old daughter, who thinks old dad is just on a trashy site.

As has been said elsewhere, you know where to find porn. I'm not telling you that's not your right or perogative. Have at it. In fact, some of you who have bragged about your large cajones, why don't you try that during finals or in the UGLi or in your family room. Get back to me on how that goes.

What I want is to be able to read about Michigan sports in peace. That's why I come here. Large pics and gifs of gorgeous boobies make this more difficult. Yes, I can read in a private place. But I also multitask. I can be watching a movie with the kids, or writing at work, and have mgoblog on a tab in the background. You can only watch "The Lion King" or "Holes" or "Cheaper by the Dozen" or "The Princess Bride" so many times. Having my laptop with me, and not worrying about bouncing boobies, allows me to follow the latest Harbaugh/RR travails, or what Dee Hart is going to do.

Edit:  I guess there is one thing that I do think crosses the line. The whole bitch slap / pimp hand thing, I don't like that. I don't like it when people say that someone needs to bitch slap Mary Sue Coleman. My sisters threatened to kill me if I married a meek, submissive, obedient woman. Someone, I suppose, you could bitch slap. Someone I could order to go make me a ham sammich. My wife is not meek and submissive. Nor does she wear the pants. But personally, I'd rather be with someone strong-willed who speaks her mind than with someone who wants to be abused and put in her place. To each their own.

...hot chicks with nice boobies who pretend to be journalists in between swimsuit photo shoots and who tweet rumors of decommitments of backup quarterbacks who would be starting if not for the copious amounts of FLASH DILITHIUM possessed by a classmember/teammate???  Can we talk about chicks like that?

Edit:  It occurs to me my avatar shows a tiny amount of cleavage -- meaning, copious cleavage but in a tiny, tiny picture -- but I figure that's ok cuz she's a robot.

these sound like pornos

generally, i agree. getting caught looking at a wesite with giant blue and maize text and winged helmets everywhere is pretty compromising, when it contains questionable imagery, it get a bit more awkward.

don't change your user profile or your avatar, they are part of mgoblog lore, like em0 and the lord of belch, except you didn't get bolivia'd.

was that you were right but asked at a time where the board's immaturity would be at its peak. i wouldn't even consider your post dumb. people have been making the same comment (myself included) for some time and, if anything, the explosiveness of that post made the issue extremely obvious. no need to apologize

Nothing wrong with asking for people to avoid NSFW posts.  There were two problems with his original post, however:

1)  The original image in question was not quite the pornography he made it out to be.

2)  He shared way too much personal information, in a way that really weakened his point.  It's one thing to say "hey, my co-worker saw [offensive picture x]," and that's why certain things shouldn't be posted.  It's quite another to explain that you're upset because your wife saw a picture that is far from pornographic, and that you are in deep shit because of it, and that because you are unable to simply explain to your wife that sometimes immature people post questionable photos on a board that is actually devoted to high-minded football discussion, all of the other people on these boards need to change their internet viewing habits.

That, combined with the fact that OP apparently uses his real name and a picture of his wife as his avatar, explains the real reason that OP's post got everyone so agitated:  OP is an internet over-sharer.  While mgoblog is a community, the anonymous denizens of an internet message board are not your friends, and sharing details of your life -- including the apparent lack of balance in your marriage -- with readers of a sports blog will never, ever end well.

Yeah, the over-sharing trend seems to have continued in this thread as well...

My main issue wasn't his point (it's pretty legitimate, I'm happy that the mgoblog community is, for the most part, a shining beacon of righteousness in the dark hell that is the internet), but that instead of making a request, he kind of stated it as a demand.  Also, he was upset about the image of a pimp hand, in a thread with PIMP HAND in the title. It's like going to the beach and complaining about all the water.

Regarding my OP, never said that pic in question was porn. Just NSFW. Of course, different workplaces are different. Maybe in your workplace, it is fine. It isn't in mine.

Regarding over-sharing, reluctantly, I may agree with you. Which is why I'm contemplating just killing the original username, avatar, and anything personal.

On the other hand, I have enjoyed reading CRex's Korean dating adventures, and hearing bits about Brian's life. Some of the personal stories are enjoyable.

The other thing is, just because you do something stupid, you shouldn't necessarily run away and hide. At this point, I almost feel, well I'm branded as such and such, take it like a man. I definitely am willing to publicly stand behind most anything I've ever written here. Having my name attached, for good or bad, causes me not to post something slanderous, etc. Now, I wish I could retract my OP, and that it had never been posted, but that's different from saying I don't agree with what I wrote originally.

But tried not to make it the poster. You post good stuff. Don't run off. If you had stuck to the workplace model (though it WAS Saturday night), you might have gotten off with just a lot of rebellious boobs images.  But it was the "I'm in the doghouse with the wife because a thread had a medium sized picture of a thong even though watching the game I saw 20 ads for the Victoria Secrets Fashion Show and my wife makes me watch Project Runway" thing that seemed over the top.

But I would stick with the name, and keep posting. It was a funny stupid night post...not an obnoxious one that I think anyone seriously holds against you. If you don't like the little teasing, go ninja style.  But I'd stick it out. No one thinks of you as a stupid troll type.  Avatar? I'd personally change it, not because your wife isn't a beautiful woman, but I wouldn't be posting pics of my wife on the internet for all these dogs to see. (You know I love all you dogs though, right?  Woof Woof right back at ya).  CRex did the great personal diaries, but he never posted pics of his future wife. And I'm sure she's smokin' too, but he knows what's probably a good boundary of internet protection. (And even he was getting some real life recognition that made him pull back, much to all our disappointment...but you gotta do what ya gotta do).

This is the world we live in, Stephen (if that's your real name...). This sounds like something you want to avoid because it hurts your family, but if it's really worth it to you, then it's either mgoblog and deal with it, or walk away. When I first joined, I thought this would be completely M sports, but there are a lot of perverts out there, and it can't be avoided.

I admire your willingness to take a stand, and while I completely agree with you, boys will be boys, and boys will be immature and inappropriate. When I do come on here, I only click on topics that sound very on-topic, but even that will bring something you don't expect most of the time.

It shouldn't be a matter of you not wanting your family to see it, it should be a matter of you not wanting to see it because of how your family will be affected. (Just my opinion and own philosophy)

this blog shouldn't have to face losing readers like you or the OP because idiots want to post bouncing jugs. there's no point to them other than 8 "omg, i'd do her"s. the possibility of losing readers isn't worth it. again, it shouldn't come down to the 'wants' of the lowest common denominator.

I think you need to step away from the keyboard for a while.  Go have some genuine human interaction.  Call old friends, go have lunch with your wife, make a new friend.  Don't come back here until after Christmas.  You life will be better.  If you are addicted enough to this blog that you can't wait until you are home and the kids are in bed, then I think you need an MGoIntervention.  If you respect your wife so much, she may have a point if she is trying to get you to not be on this blog so much, regardless of content or what pictures there are one here.  Oh, and this is the internet.  I admire you trying to inject some moral fiber into the masses, but, dude, it's the internet and a lot of posters are high school and college kids.

Awesome - I definitely admire you trying to wrangle the riff-raff out of here, and it would make it a better experience for me for sure.  I think at this point, we've lost the battle to the money-making possibility of this board becoming less elitist.  With our power to wantonly neg without losing points taken away, the general population, around here has become less sophisticated I think.  Anyway - Happy Holidays and Go Blue!

While I generally tend to agree with what you're saying, there's something I don't get about what's upsetting you.  I've never seen the type of content that is upsetting you in a thread where I wouldn't expect it.  A thread debating who the hottest sideline reporter might be is a place where I would expect something like that, and if I had a concern about content like that, I wouldn't click on the thread.  I can't recall ever once seeing the type of imagery that got you in trouble in a thread that was actually about something football or otherwise sports-related.

StephenRKass

Which is why I wouldn't go to a thread where you'd expect hot pics. If you don't want to get wet, don't play in the water.

According to the mods, however, and in my experience, more boobie pics are showing up in more general Michigan sports threads. That's all I would request avoiding. As far as I'm concerned, Brian could add a "great Michigan boobies" tab, and as long as I avoided that tab, we'd be good. Those who want it, have it. Those who don't, can avoid it.

Like Nuclear explosions.  Just as stupid, but apparently more objectionable. I'd find it to be a much better site for discourse if instead of deleting 20 boobs a day, you were deleting 20 posts a day with people calling others cock suckers, or even morons.  THAT hurts discourse, and a civil page.  I find it a lot more childish to allow junior high name calling than wow, cleavage with covered nipples, it all must go. It seems 5 hot redheads will get deleted in minutes, but trolls with negative hundreds of points (or even regular posters who probably deserved a wrist slap) go on and on and on.  You only have so much time, and it's not a job, so I understand why it doesn't all get caught. I just really question the priorities set by the site.

that a lot of the people who are being pointed at and demanded to be kicked off the board merely represent a counter opinion. a lot of the time they also refrain from the gimmicky nicknames and such and just present an irritating viewpoint. do they seek out threads where they can do this? yes. is it trolling? to a degree. but until they break rules or whatever, it's kind of petty to just turf them. they can't create threads and people have all the ability to come up with their own counter to their argument. but the mods have been rather solid with tossing out the ones who violate sensibilities or are excessively obvious.

i do agree that offensive name-caling does need to go. and i've probably called people morons before so it's a reminder to not be an idiot myself.
