META: "your shoes sparkle in the moonlight, fancy dancer"
"your shoes sparkle in the moonlight, fancy dancer"
I don't get it.
What is this a reference to?? Is it a movie quote?
I Googled it and all the search results are either nonsense, or refer to MGoBlog in one way or another..
Can someone explain what it means?

It was a private message between me and Brian. Thanks, Brian. /blush

My secret plan has been found out! I must return to my sparkling lair for more scheming.

The new mantra has two functions:
- Fictional backhanded compliment to Denard from Hoke
- Sarcastic platitudes to the anti-"DOOM" and Coaching Carousel crowd
At least, that is my reading.

It's jive turkey.
January 20th, 2011 at 6:09 PM ^
Excuse me, I speak Jive.
January 20th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
He reminds me of Big Will Campbell there.

You know the Elton John song, "Tiny Dancer?"
It has nothing to do with this.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:19 PM ^
ooohhhhh, you mean the "Tony Danza" song. understandable mistake.
January 20th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
"Don't let your son, go down on me...."
January 20th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
For instance, mine says "You are one funny dude, keep up the good work". As for yours, I'm guessing Brian has taken a shine to you.
January 20th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
I was wondering why I had an ASCII middle finger below the banner...
January 20th, 2011 at 9:09 PM ^
The phrase "take a shine to" needs to be used more often.
January 20th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
Wow I thought I was the only one who had no idea what that meant. Thank you it's good to know I'm not alone.

While we're getting things explained...can someone tell me what META stands for? Can't figure it out for the life of me.

January 20th, 2011 at 7:06 PM ^
Yea, i figured that part out. But like OT = off-topic I was wondering if the acronym stood for anything. Thanks for your help.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
Its greek, so no, it's not an abbreviation.
Here's Wikipedia on meta.
January 20th, 2011 at 9:35 PM ^
cuz when I saw META, I thought, "This is Greek to me...."
January 20th, 2011 at 7:24 PM ^
It's a word meaning "self referential"
January 20th, 2011 at 7:39 PM ^
Now it makes sense, thanks for the info guys.
January 20th, 2011 at 8:17 PM ^
My mind is about to explode. That was too much information in one single thread!
January 20th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
I don't think it's related, but it reminds me of his "vague, open ended answer" in this sketch (about 45 seconds in):
January 20th, 2011 at 6:59 PM ^
Shhhht!! hey, keep it quiet, I used it to compliment a girl and she fell for it, so not posting evidence that it's a total rip of from a sporstblog would help...me.
God sometimes I hate google
January 20th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
it doesn't mean anything. I just had to change the banner from "doom" and it popped into my mind.
January 21st, 2011 at 12:38 AM ^
Awesome.
My working theory was that if it wasn't a reference to a movie quote or song lyric, that it was mocking all the over-the-top fawning that some fans and media have been doing over Hoke.
I like the real explanation better though.
Also, I feel so honored that Fearless Leader has posted in my thread! This is pretty much the pinnacle of MGoGlory!!

As you all know, Brian is a huge fan of soft rock, especially groundbreaking soft rock from the 70's.
What you MIGHT NOT know is that this amazing 70's soft rock pioneer, a band called Bread, put out a song called Fancy Dancer back in the day.
Allow me to blow your mind:
Bread - "Fancy Dancer"
Watchin' you move across the floor
You're fire up my mind can't take it no more
You're a fancy dancer
Makin' me blind so I can't see
You're a fancy dancer
And you ain't no good for me
You know you're comin' on strong
You're my favorite misery
You captured my soul - imprisoned my heart
You know you control whatever you start
You're fancy dancer
And it ain't too hard to see
You're fancy dancer
And you'll make a fool of me
I know it won't be for long
Until you dance a new song
But just for tonight won't you dance your dance for me
I'm not the first and I won't be the last
Don't want your future - just make the night last
C'mon fancy dancer
Make me blind so I can't see
You're a fancy dancer
And you ain't no good for me
Yeh, we both knew from the start
You'd try do dance with my heart
But just for tonight won't you dance your dance for me
-------------
So you see, Hoke is a "fancy dancer" with his shoes "sparkling in the moonlight." Who knows if Michignan football will pan out over the next couple years, but his feet were sure on fire in that press conference. The moon is showering down in shades of maize and blue, Hoke's bellbottoms are swaying to the soft rock.... Brian is intoxicated by Hoke, and for this one night he's just going to submit himself to the emotional tidal wave.
After my explanation, it seems obvious now, doesn't it?
January 21st, 2011 at 7:53 AM ^
Hoke may have intoxicated Brian to the point that he submitted, emotionally, maybe just long enough to create and post that eerie phrase, but here's me crossing my fingers that Hoke is Bread's "Fancy Dancer" to Brian, rather than the seemingly more personal "Fancy Dancer" The Commodores sang about:
"Look'a here the way you move is such a freaky thrill
Baby it's the way you do your thing
I love the way you twist and turn your body girl
You're like a puppet on a string yeah
Shake it baby, shake it baby"
THE COMMODORES
"Fancy Dancer"

wow. I never, EVER thought I'd see a Bread song quoted in MGoBlog.

are those shoelaces tied or not?!

Something to do with "the situation" when he was on Dancing With the Stars. Brian goes on and on about him in other posts... But dont look for the posts because they are hard to find.
