Meta: Would you like to be able to sort comments more intelligently?
I for one would like to maintain a personalized list of mgousers I trust and be able to filter out their comments on a particular thread. This would make reading popular threads so much easier.
Would anybody else find this useful?
p.s: At first this would probably mean that you only get to read the replies to the OP and not to individual comments but that can also be worked out.

that would require more money donated for more or better MgoServers

I would prefer it if people would simply comment more intelligently.

What happens if a new poster comes in with relevant opinions and insights? You'll have missed the opportunity to see some valid viewpoints. Maybe the other way would work better, where you can mute idiots. It may take more effort on your part, but it would assure you get a richer experience...

merit.

I would much prefer to see a model where I can mute/blacklist people that I don't want to read, rather than one where I'm forced to whitelist everyone that I might want to read.

I hope I make the cut.

For instance, it would be great if the old comments could be collapsed somehow.
At a minimum, the "new" indicator should be at the top of the comment and not the bottom. Although I guess I could scroll up instead of down. But still....
August 24th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
While on the topic of new comments, it would be nice if new comments not on the current page weren't marked as read. The pages load faster if the limit is lower (or at least it seems like they do), but then all the posts in the thread lose the "new" marker, even if they aren't on the current page. I'm not too hopeful on this one though, since I'm guessing it would take a large amount of work for a relatively minor fix.

WITH ANOTHER FAAAANTASTIC PRODUCT!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SORT COMMENTS MORE INTELLIGENTLY?
ARE YOU SICK OF HAVING TO FILTER OUT USELESS COMMENTS WITH YOUR BRAIN?
WISH YOUR COMPUTER WOULD DO IT FOR YOU?
WELL BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU!

A man that went before his time, and a man that could ridiculously out-do the sham-wow dude.
Edit: Dang, beat me to it.

META: the new OT.
August 24th, 2010 at 5:55 PM ^
This is actually a pretty common thread for online communities. They get to a point where "omg we've discussed everything that we can that's on-topic" so they start going to off-topic & meta. Meta, unfortunately, can be murder.
September 4th, she's coming fast and not a moment too soon.

- Thats what I do now to read my most respected MGoBloggers and those with 1000+ points... I've been amazed at how many posters I skip since I've taken up this method of filtering! My blood pressure doesn't reach astronomical levels nearly as often anymore...
August 24th, 2010 at 4:14 PM ^
Yet you would never read your own post...
August 24th, 2010 at 4:26 PM ^
I should clarify; I respect a good Avatar picture almost as much as good content. Enjoy your Schmitt's!

Only if the comments become more intelligent...

It took me a minute, then I had to double check to make sure I wasn't losing it, then triple check to make sure I didn't miss something. I almost missed something, but I see what you did there. Very nice
August 24th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
I missed it.
August 25th, 2010 at 12:11 AM ^
Read your comment above and then think about it. It should become perfectly clear and then your head might explode in wtf-a-tude.
August 24th, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
I actually wouldn't mind if a poster who is basically negbombed away (spider jumps to mind today, but there are others) are shown as collapsed strings, since those threads inevitably turn into long diatribes about "X being an ass" and how one side doesn't get the other. I get it - you said something idiotic to borderline-demented to get a rise and people are calling you on it, you respond negatively, and everyone negs you. It is a train wreck I've seen enough of.

I think a digg-type comment system would work well, but would take a lot of time to implement. Basically (for those that don't use digg), the comment with the most points shows up at the top and you can then view the thread of comments it is in.
Dailytech has something similar. I think they count the points for the entire thread and the thread of comments with the most points moves to the top.

Would LOVE the opportunity to limit what I experience in a day to only what I am used to and prepared for, and thereby ensure that my horizons are never broadened and preconceptions never challenged.

Commie
August 24th, 2010 at 3:57 PM ^
The new(ish) comment overhaul has been a big step backwards in my opnion. I liked it when the point total for each comment was big and off to the right side. Coming to threads late I could scroll quickly to see which comments were worth reading.
These small gray point totals make it pretty much impossible now... the comments are all just one big mess, difficult to sort out the valuable ones. So yeah, I think some kind of change is in order.
August 24th, 2010 at 4:07 PM ^
Same here. That's why I suggested ordering comments or threads by points so that the most relevant conversations could be seen at the top and the trolls get relegated to the bottom.
August 24th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
Maybe there can be a user rank that ranks mgopoints/posts. That ratio will show quality posters. Then maybe this app you're talking about can block anyone under 1 (meaning they have less points than posts, which means they get negged 2x more than pos'd).
August 24th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
Yes, we could call it the FoxNews filter!
August 24th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
Good posters have good subjects/titles, it's quicker to scan them and the avatars/points.
August 24th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
the most positive points per comment. Those with up-votes bubble to the top. You could also make this some kind of weighted hybrid with the users total mgopoints or take into account the most replies on an original comment.
August 24th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
Thats what I was trying to describe in a terribly mixed up way. I agree this would be a cool feature.
August 24th, 2010 at 4:58 PM ^
Honestly, it would mean I'd only read responses from Magnus.
Actually that sounds like the best blog ever oh my god.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
That blog exists...
August 24th, 2010 at 7:22 PM ^
I would like a comment ranking system like reddit - users vote on comments and the ones with the highest rating, presumably the ones that add value, appear at the top of the page.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:08 PM ^
We aren't supposed to talk about points.
Even in Meta, I believe points discussions are a no-no.
This whole points thing just seems so infantile.
August 25th, 2010 at 12:33 AM ^
How about we just have an MgoTribal Council every 3 months or so and vote off any users are short on the brain or short on the temper. I would enjoy that very much
August 25th, 2010 at 12:42 AM ^
I thought this blog site was different. I was wrong. I see the same egotistical over inflated god like complexes of people acting like the opinions of others don't matter. There are many nice people on the site, but damn some of what has been said is crazy.
I guess for me reading stupid comments is like watching ESPN announcers at times. It's easier to turn it off than listen to the dribble that spews from their mouth or in the blogger world move to the next comment. It is diversity in opinions that open us up to new thinking which pushes all people to learn. Without that we would all believe and think the same way.
