META: Why are the servers still so terrible on this site?

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

Can we have a kickstarter to fix this or something? Yeah I know, we lost rabble rabble rabble, but it really is infuriating during the game.

The servers did, however, fail to get a first down but they were awarded one on refresh anyway, or at least that's what is happening over here.

In all honesty, all I am hoping for at this point is some capacity improvements if nothing else, having given up hope on the major improvements that were mentioned a couple years ago.

To the extent that you're saying complaints about this site are illegitimate because there is no price to access all content, I disagree.

If you don't pay for a service, usually *you* are the product. The ad revenue on this site is non-trivial; it funds multiple salaries based on our eyeballs.

"Complaining" in this sense is only annoying because the platform doesn't give us another way to provide feedback, so all feedback gets funneled into the same place non-feedback goes (the board + comments).

1) If mods want these posts to end, they should create a way to gather user feedback.

2) Posts like this provide non-negligible feedback. Brian et al. can take it into account with their other metrics to decide whether better hosting is worth the expense to the business.

Hell, make it that you have to make a matching contribution to the site.

You can donate $20 to the servers if you donate another $20 to the site.

I'll bet that goes very well.

Offload the images and database to sit on a CDN and the site background on a cloud server(s). It's what every major (and many minor) sites do. And no, it's not expensive.

How about spending ad revenue and donation money on servers? Why does everything need a kickstarter these days? Blog looks and performs like it's a 20th century website.

I work in the CDN (content delivery network) space. Throw more servers at it and that's not the right solution. You need to geographically spread out the load so that everyone isnt trying to access the same way. When you go to espn.com, the background of the site is served off of servers in a central location or two, and the images and database are sitting at the far ends of the Internet, in hundreds or thousands of locations. Content is mirrored (replicated).

Think of it as a restaurant. Sure, you can build a bigger kitchen to serve everyone, but if people can't get into the parking lot to begin with, then who cares if you have a bigger kitchen?

The solution is dynamic web acceleration. Amazon Web Services does it cheaply, and so do other CDNs.

We each donate $5 and we can get this site looking respectable. It is too bad because the blog provides the best content. Also, for the love of God, can we stop with the fucked up mail order bride ads.

brian and crew are THE best.

they make being a michigan fan infinitely better.

he creates an emotional connection after each game.

you think that just falls from the sky?

and you are going to complain?

about servers!?

then donate.

buy them servers.

contact some IT company and pay for it to be fixed.

jesus tits where do you get off just thinking it is good enough to lob a complaint out into the ether?

start the goddamn kickstarter yourself.

what sort of society do we live in where people think making a difference just requires typing a bunch of shit on some blog under a four letter name and then declaring you love this blog.

i love this blog.

it has made being a michigan fan an amazing experience.

cumong.

No one said the content is bad you dipshit.  We all love it that is why we are here. We appreciate the content and the work that goes into it. But the servers.  They. Are. Shit.  And it is costing the proprietors money in clicks and therefore advertising dollars during what should be their busiest time. Comments about the servers are made with the intention to help them understand that their traffic is down, which they should care about if they actually like to make money from this labor of love.

As great as the proprietors of this site are at generating content, this is a hobby for them that they are really good at.  They are essentially horrible businessmen who don't care about making more money or the continuous improvement of their livlihood. Which is fine, it is their website they can do whatever the hell they want to with it, and I'll keep reading it because a good part of it is really really good and entertaining... and they will keep having sponsors like some dude they know who is a mortgage broker, who I sure is a fine fellow but who pays them about 5% of what the space could be worth if they had any business accumen whatsoever.

But they have proven over the years that they really don't care what you, the user, thinks.  Every so often  there is a big uprising of MGoUsers who threaten to stop reading the site and they keep coming back (just like me), and Brian and Co keep putting really good content on an really structurally inadequate and visually horrific platform. And they keep wasting copious amounts of time on USMNT analysis when literally 99% of their audience could not give a shit less about, because - I have no idea because... they want to keep being a 3rd rate website, I guess?

Anywho, the site will continue to be ugly and suck, so don't hold your breath. Just keep reading and enjoying.  Except when something really interesting happens in the world of Michigan sports. Then you can check ESPN like everyone else does.
