Meta: Volunteer(s) wanted to help maintain Michigan bar map.

Submitted by justingoblue on

Hey all, I just emailed the creator of the UM-friendly bar location map about an old request he had for some help maintaining it and he's still looking for someone to help out since it hasn't been updated in a while.

Ideally we're looking for someone to add new locations and maybe take out a few outdated entries. This shouldn't be a huge time committment but looking for someone who could go through and add everything in the sticky since the last update and then maintain by putting in new info when it's posted in the sticky.

8/26 edit: Bumped back to the top of threads hoping to get another person or two. If you have a second, posbang captincork below; he's the first volunteer.

We should publish the whole "method of delivery vs. accuracy of the map" addendum just in case to ensure that anyone trying to do live updates can do so with relative accuracy as long as possible. I just had this thought about someone, for example, shotgunning beer and then trying to provide an accurte account of whether of not it was a Michigan bar or a converted basement somewhere.

"I think this is a Michigan bar. If a Michigan bar had their dog meet you at the door and a random woman in the kitchen bitching at us as we went down to the tastefully-decorated Michigan basement.

Verdict: This is the official Michigan bar of an upscale housing development in Canton, Michigan. Put it on the spreadsheet!"

I bartend 1-2 times a month in the Worthington, OH area.  If you're interested to come out, I have a reserved TV at a decisively Buckeye friendly bar.

If the only place I have to look for information is within the sticky I am willing to update the map. My current job situation, which will only last for the next 5-7 months, leaves me with enough stress free moments to work on this. I don't know how I am supposed to figure out if an entry is outdated. Any suggestion that aren't sarcastic would be welcome, sarcasm is welcome as long as I find it funny.

If you read the comments in the sticky there are posts that will say that there's a different Alumni Association bar for 2013 than there was for 2012 or comments about a bar that closed or whatever.

I'll get a list of people who reply here over to JLo tomorrow and I'm sure he can let us know right where he left off and everything else.

I always felt that should be a revenue generator for the site.  For a nominal fee, depending on the region (size, proximity, alumni base) you could register your bar as an official, MGoBlog MGoBar.  As a former bar owner I would've been very interested in that sort of thing.

Because there's a lot of folks in between those locations that still want to watch the game, there are bars that aren't officially affiliated with the UMAA... Hell, there are people who live outside the United States, too.

The UMAA list is a good place to start, but it's by no means exhaustive.

Thanks in advance, folks.  I haven't really been able to keep up with this recently.  (Surprise! Having a toddler makes it hard to watch the games, let alone stay active on mgoblog.)

I thought I'd weigh in real quick to answer a couple of the questions that popped up.  Google makes editing the maps really straightforward.  I'll add the volunteers as approved map editors and send out a quick How-To, but it's not hard.  As far as knowing what places to add, I just visited the Bar Location thread every now and again and made changes based on suggestions from posters in the thread, along with any other related forum threads I saw.  I also checked the "official" list to make sure the map was consistent with their locations.

m1817: that is just the list of official alumni club locations.  The map is an attempt to also include "M-Friendly" bars, i.e. those that will always have the game on and have regular Michigan attendance, even if it's not sanctioned by the alumni association.  If you check out the map, every blue pin indicates a non-official location (and there are a lot of them).

Thanks again.

...an M com sci (or similar) student out there who wants to whack together a basic site/app for mgousers (perhaps with requisite mgopoints balance) to post locations with review capabiltiies and geolocating?  I'd be willing to sponsor to the tune of a couple hundred bucks (read $200).  Anyone else interested?

justingoblue - I'll email the guys so you have my contact, if we get enough interest we can work it out.

Cheers,

FG

Any business/money related suggestions should go to Seth, I'm just trying to play facilitator since I have the ability to and there seems to be interest.

You can get in touch with him at [his name] [at] [this site]. There's also a contact that goes to Brian at the top of the page, but this would be in Seth's field.

I'll throw my hat into the ring if more volunteers are needed. I love the experience of watching Michigan games at a friendly bar, I might as well contribute by helping others finding these spots as well.

I spend enough time on the blog as it is during down times at work and as long as it's in a google doc type window any prying eyes around here won't notice the difference.

I didn't read through all of the responses but could something like Pin Drop be used? This is definitely something that I would like to see a little more developed.

I do quite a bit of traveling and would gladly accept the challenge of visiting as many of these fine establishments as my schedule allows. Spreadsheet novice but willing to learn.
