META - Virus on site?

Submitted by mGrowOld on

I'm randomly getting a prompt to upgrade my Java plug-in when I post this morning so I closed MGoBlog and updated Java.  Came back, got the same prompt and when I clicked "yes" I got a pop-up that was clearly bullshit so I closed it and my anti-virus software (Trend) kicked in and blocked it.

Also you'll notice multiple instances of veteran posters having double and triple posts, being unable to respond directly to posts and wierd boxes to type in when they do appear.  I think something's wrong.

The funniest thing about his "blogs are nonsense" comment was that he was so into pushing things like hashtags and other social media stuff. Obviously he's just being a dick, and I'm sure he saw or heard about the mgoblog report, but I like the idea that he literally just discovered the internet and hashtags are like the only thing he understands (I mean, he clearly doesn't understand the idea of emails leaving a virtual papertrail).

In the past Java was necessary for webpages to load properly, but that hasn't been the case for 3-4 years.

I also don't do any technical or creative developing that might require Java so I have never had the need to have Java installed.

The Java message is one I have had in the past (Norton didn't like it either), but some of the spot errors that others are seeing tend to be instances where bad code has been embedded in a signature line or a post as well. In the thread below about Harbaugh, for example, the OP's sig line has an image that doesn't work but it is causing (potentially, as I am about to experiment with their sig line) residual issues with posting in there. Threads with a shit ton of GIFs and images have done that in the past too. Perhaps another Drupal quirk.

I've seen the Java update redirect myself.

The bad gateway messages, the funky formatting ... those aren't so much a concern.

Being prompted to perform a Java update from a website that is *not* Oracle is another matter.  Definitely something suspicious there.

Drupal released information yesterday (or maybe Thursday, I can't quite remember now) that indicated they had been hacked. They went so far as to say that any site not updating its code within seven hours of the release of the patch on Oct 15 should assume that it has been hacked. That's pretty direct and specific. I was going to ask Brian about it as well.

Here's a link to the story on the BBC:

I use linux on all my machines.  Essentially I am virus proof since they aren't written to exploit Linux, yes I know there are a few exceptions.

Recently whenever I get on mgoblog and a few other forum sites my computers activity levels spike.  I believe that's what happens when they've been handed a command or piece of information that they don't know how to process and are looking for a suitable application to handle it.

The app keeps freezing up and redirecting me. I had to download the HD version and all is well... Not sure what's going on

pages weren't loading, comments were hard to make, but things seem back to normal.

Brian probably just hired more hamsters to run the wheels faster.

MGoBlog has always been slow for me in terms of loading pages, etc. Probably the slowest site I visit. Not sure if it's me or the site.

My computer recently became infected and the messages I got were "powershell has stopped working" and a pop-up continually asking me if I wanted to de-bug the webpage. No idea if these problems are related to what other folks are experiencing.

A friend installed some type of malware and it has helped some.
