Is the irony here not evident?
META: off topic etiquette?
I've mentioned in other threads that my time in Bolivia helped me to understand that I am also part of the problem, so yes there is a little irony...
That said, reading all the responses here the only hope lies in us each individually refraining from acting like a child when we have such impulses. Is that easy? Not as easy as it should be.
The constant back and forth lately is starting to feel a lot like the RR debates. Needless to say neither side is going to win so everyone should shut the fuck up.
you are not a politician
Ehh, I'd vote for him
Only if he brings back the five o'clock free crack give-aways.
Political correctness isn't really my strong suit. Vote for me though and free Red Balls for everyone. It's like coke in a can.
My generation was different. I heard about Blue Balls, but never Red Balls. Regardless, I want neither set (of balls.) I suppose this has something to do with the rash of stupid male excitement posts over which way a recruit is tending?
NSFMrs.K!!!! Blue Balls? Inappropriate!
is that anything like Prince Albert in a can?
on the can.
I've found myself bring a Dick about stuff way more lately. I feel bad for it. I don't feel like I ever start it, but no one is less the culprit than anyone else who participated, I guess.
Anyway, sorry, and I will make a converted effort in my part to refrain from doing so.
certainly welcome in a whore house
Make it stop!
Not a complaint, but this should be META, not OT. Discussing the site is certainly on topic, IMO.
Come on man.
That you've accumulated 28 points.
But you didn't have a sterling reputation before your meltdown, and then you went full flamebait. People bitch about users with lots of point being treated differently, but the mods have you extra leeway anyway. And you've kinda proved their point by your continued juvenile ranting.
The mods are all a--holes. They're just internet tough-guys. I bet if I met them in person they'd think twice about docking me points!
He's admitting he's a troll.
Ban him again, please.
Just stop complaining about the past. Take a few weeks off of mgoblog, and when you come back don't complain about what happened. You have been in the wrong, and have been totally inappropriate lately.
Juvenile posts is not going to get you banhammered. You need to search real hard for your "grown up" gene, or find a way to make better choices (part 2 in the "mom" voice).
Love your contribution to the board, MGBM. Please continue to put the motherly smackdown wherever necessary.
is gestapo the best comparison you could come up with?
If you're going to say I'm only coming on to continue trolling, just keep banning everything.
Where is BiSB as a mod to give out those email addresses to spam sites when you need him? ;-)
There hasn't been much complaining about OT threads specifically. People are overreacting,
One thread was pulled by the mods because they didn't feel some Deadspin hit job about an ESPN sex scandal from 4 years ago was really something we want to have on the board.
Then another thread (that wasn't an OT thread) blew up when TheGhostofYost drunkenly started talking about his boner and proceeded to lose his shit when people said that wasn't cool or appropriate.
Then yet another thread (that also wasn't an OT thread), where someone didn't properly title their post, blew up thanks to TheGhostofYost's sock puppet accounts shitting all over the thread out of anger from having been banned.
Two of those threads had one thing in common.
That is correct. Obviously there are too many threads blowing up.
And snarked about. He's talking about permissible OT threads where someone has to be too cool for school and come in and say "this doesnt belong on a sports blog" or "why do you like that loser" mentality. If it's offensive, or serves so small a segment of the readership then chime in. But if it's just not your cup of tea, just skip it. No one cares that you don't like it. (See: "I hate the NBA/hockey/soccer/etc" or "Game of Thrones is for neeerrdddddssss."
But, my points say I am better than you. And Brian's points say he is better than everyone else! This thread is giving me a nice stroll through memory lane and a chuckle though.
The off season is getting worse every year.
I propose that the offseason be eliminated entrely. Someone petition the NCAA to allow football teams to play 42 games in the regular season, please.
That's not enough; what the heck are we supposed to do for those other 10 weeks?
Spring practice and the Spring game, dude!
Initially I thought you were proposing the blog shut down after the football season. My heart skipped a beat.
This is the worst part of the year to be on this blog. I think I only check this site maybe twice a day on the weekend. You maybe see two or three threads a day posted in which they have been already talked about the day before. The list of people posting during the summer gets shorter and shorter. There just isn't enough stuff going on in sports right now and people are starving.
I think I only check this site maybe twice a day on the weekend.
Assuming i was caught in the ire of those posts as well as i attempted to be the voice of reason and my comment was deleted. It all comes down to quality content and perspective. I'll say it again and again, some threads mean way to much to people. This is a place where i go to enjoy similar likes, with people everywhere. One semi amateur thread will never ruin my day or my time spent here. Let it go. This is a blog, nothing more, nothing less.
In one of the threads that I believe the OP is referencing, entire portions of the discussion were deleted, so if your comment was in one of those chains, it is the "collateral damage" being referenced in the e-mail that you likely received. That's merely a product of how the site is set up.
I believe the only time that only a specific individual's comments get deleted is if the comment itself has no replies or that user is caved, in which case threads stand a chance of not making much sense because replies to the caved user will remain. In my opinion, that's why doing block deletions followed by caving - if it comes to it - helps preserve at least some content in an otherwise well-meaning, on-topic thread.
There are too many people here who think because they have 3000 points that they are the damn kings of the internet. Personally, I've started going to other sites because of the morons that have 60 replies a dealing with OT or grammar. it sucks having to wade thru all that bs.I am sure I'm not alone
You are welcomeds
I am so close to being the king of the Internet. I can't wait.
+1 to help you on your way to the throne. Don't forget the little people once you make it, though.
Let me just say that the view is great from up here.
People with 3,000 points are kings of the Internet? HA. Everyone knows that people with 28,000 points are the kings of the Internet.
28,000? Well, what does that make us guys with 3000 points? A Duke of the internet? An Earl of the internet?
It makes you the Duke of Earl.
of the internet. But I'm a beer drinkin, sports lovin bitch of the internet
I consider you to be the "beer drinkin, sports lovin Darlin of the internet"
period be damned
count your chickens before they hatch. You never know when you'll have a meltdown and feel the wrath of the BANHAMMER!
2 more points to blow it....
I had better step up my game if I want to reach 28,000 before you...
I still have mod powers. I'll just freeze you, Han Solo-like, at 27,999.
Careful . . . I hear profitgoblue is still disgruntled so he might dock both of you and give himself a bump! It would turn into a war of MGoAttrition and no one will benefit (except the person the winner (profitgoblue, of course)). (Yes, I just used a double parenthetical. Don't hate the poster, hate the game!)
What sites are you going to, just out of curiosity? Maybe we could all use some variety in the off-season.
I'm pretty sure he's talking about porn
I joined another site just to check it out. Lately I find myself checking that other board more. (More still being relative... Checking both WAYYYY too often).
I planned on hitting 1600 and declaring myself king. Now you're telling me it's 3000. Welp, over halfway there I guess.
Grammar corrections are not an issue for me. I do think there is a certain "standard" this site pride's itself on and is the reason I come back to it time and again. (Seriously, no matter how bad you may think some of the comments here may be, just head out to other sites and read through their comments… not pretty). The correction replies do become a problem though when they devolve into gamemanship. It's the gamemanship which seems to be the more characteristic form of replies on a lot of threads these days. Instead of adding to the dialouge, many responders (whether they are kings of the internetz or plebes) seem to be vying to one up one another in an attempt to prove wit and author the next meme. Sometimes it's hilarious and appropriate, but more often (or perhaps just more recently?) it's become tedious and way too predictable.
I totally agree. To be honest, front page content has really been on a downward trend, and simply become very sophomoric in nature. Oh boy, this "board" is an embarrassment to our fan base. I have reading others as well, and coming less and less. Frankly, this is yet another thread where people are spilling the beans of displeasure and I would venture a guess nothing changes. So that usually means its breakup time...
Meta: I personally think the board should go away when MgoBlog 3.0 is launched. If Brian refuses to invest the time and money into making this a well-oiled functional place, or pay someone to create and monitor threads, then he should eliminate it. How many emails does he get a week about taddle tales and meanie people's posting bad stuff? How many bad threads or puerile post does it take before there is a breaking point? How many times must we see Upton, cats, or some dumbass comment about MSU before enough is enough? Or the worst, I come to the Internet to argue or be a jerk because my life sucks type comments before it is enough already?
This board is definitely getting way too testy about everything. It seems like every topic starts a massive argument. Any comment that isn't effusively positive about Michigan football gets shouted down as trolling. People need to relax and have fun. It's the off season. And it's football. Calm down.
Very well said. It seems like some people can't hear an opposing opinion without labeling it as trolling or off-topic or anything negative. I think if folks relax, like you said, approach things with some humor and maybe more situational instead of a universal ruler applied to every post then things might be easier to stomach from everyone's perspective. We (mostly) all have the same love of Michigan sports...can't we just have an easier time joking around together, too? Without it becoming off-topic all the time?
Just my 17 cents...
FWIW, I try to limit my "back-and-forth" with Mr. Rager these days. It's clearly not worth the effort.
you're instigating the kind of dialogue this thread is talking about. I think EVERYONE here needs to stop taking things so personally and stop getting worked up over petty things.
You have a lot of good things to say, Magnus. You shouldn't let a pissing match take away from that.
So . . . the OP mentions me by name, but I can't respond? Gotcha.
I won't say anything else, because I don't want to instigate a pissing match.
Honestly, what does everyone have against pissing matches? I remember when I was a kid - during the Super Bowl - drinking about a gallon of Mt Dew (before I started believing that it would shrink my balls), and having pissing contests in the snow, seeing whose yellow line would reach the farthest. I may not yet have been at my maximum length down there, but I had a stream that would make many a grown man jealous.
The point is, a pissing match is a good way for boys and men to compete on a level playing field while the men are drunk and the kids high on some sort of sugar/caffine buzz. Pissing matches get an undeserved bad name.
No wonder I always flame in those pissing matches. I could never piss very far.
so it seems you're just mentioning his name and saying he's "not worth it", just to get a jab in.
That's what it seems to me and that's what this thread is really about. I'm not trying to preach from my soapbox, just see this as an example.
there are a couple people who constantly take pot shots at you.
1.) if you respond then you become part of the problem.
2.) It is very hard to tolerate other people spewing shit and not respond.
take some solace in the fact that the casual observer understands where the fault lies (Rager, I'm looking at you)...
Plus it gives you more time to post cool stuff over on TTB! So I applaud your restraint here ... now get back to work there! :-)
Just kidding. I agree 100% with all three.
Cool story (insert picture of cat looking unimpressed with a caption 'cool story')
You're probably not even a real coyote.
I'm actually a spirit guide that manifests itself out of moon and a planet in space. I have the soothing voice of Johnny Cash and I guide people to find their soul mates, but only after they eat 'the merciless peppers of Quetzlzacatenango' and have crazy hallucinatory visions.
When that's not happening I'm really just a talking dog.
When people act like they're really the thing in their avatar. You know what "Space Coyote", you claim you're not a 'real coyote' and that you're really a talking dog. Well, news flash buddy, you would have a bunch of typos in your post if you were a dog because dogs don't have long enough fingers to properly use a keyboard.
Oh, yeah, and if you claim you're Hemingway and you're sitting at your desk typing a post, I'm about to drop a bomb on you, because Hemingway stood up at his dresser while he typed (yeah, I'm talking to you Moleskyn).
Don't get me started a manikin dressed in the UTL jersey, this isn't The Twilight Zone episode "The After Hours". And you, you're neither General Buck Turgidson nor George C Scott. I could go on (Brandon Graham, Rickey Vaughn, Stephen Kass's wife, Animal), but I think you guys get the point.
glad I dodged a bullet there.
back to ruminating with my four chambered stomach.
But internet sucks in Peru. I highly doubt you'd be able to post within an hour of my post. And don't try to give me this "you're domesticated" crap. I've seen you domesticated llamas, and no offense, but I think your forum posting abilities would be closer to an Alpaca than anything else.
Hey, screw you Space Coyote. Who are you to suggest that I'm not actually Matthew Broderick? Because, you know....I totally could be.
Oh, yeah, talk about all the other internet options out there, but the experience would be the same. Broderick is getting no where near using the internet in this day and age.
Listen here, pal. I never made a claim one way or another about standing up or sitting down while typing, so my identity as Hemingway is still intact. Maybe we should be discussing the realities of a coyote being able to exist in space. I don't think it's possible. And even if it was, how would you be able to type in a cumbersome space suite (assuming you even found a way to mitigate the lack of opposing thumbs)? What, are you going to tell me you've created a coyote-to-English voice-to-text translator? That'll be the day.
There, I've exposed you for the fraud you are.
I already exposed myself as a fraud.
And your pros are neither masculine or drunken enough to be the real Hemingway.
Yes, but when a fraud exposes himself as a fraud, how can anyone believe him, since he is, in fact, a fraud? It is likely, in this case, that the fraudster is attempting to defraud the masses for some sort of fraudulent gain. For everyone knows that when a blatant fraudster tells you anything, you should immediately discredit said fraudster, since you can assume that you are being defrauded.
It requires a clearly anti-fraudulant (and preferably finely-bearded) man to expose a fraud.
I prefer a pic of the cool starry bra instead.
How about this:
- If you haven't spell-checked or proofread your comment/OP, don't post. Along these lines, if your post is fairly long and doesn't have commas, periods, and/or paragraph breaks, don't post. Also, spell check.
- If your comment/OP pertains to a random story that nobody will understand or appreciate, don't post. Or don't get butthurt when everybody posts and says "CSB".
- I actually agree with your third point. Just posting to say "I agree" or "I disagree" is pointless...though that has been addressed in the Board FAQ.
- READ THE BOARD FAQ.
How can I avoid downvotes?
Don't be redundant. Don't use stupid nicknames like O$U. Spell things correctly. Don't post useless replies like "I agree" and whatnot.
Sometimes, it's best just to walk away. My comments weren't going to help on either of the threads referenced. The paucity of real commentary was appalling.
Bringing back the old point system might help. I really don't care that much either way about the points. There are pros and cons both ways. But when a negbang directly contributes to your point total, and you are ratcheting up 50 and 100 negative points on each post you put up, that is a severe sanction (so to speak) keeping people from being whiny and responding endlessly to perceived slights, and seeking to put up provocative, irritating posts.
My preference is for actual content, whether Meta, on topic, or off topic. For example, I'd like to hear from people about Tournette, and why he's taking an official visit, and who has seen him, and what led him to put Michigan on a visit list.
I'd also be happy to hear about the City of Detroit Emergency Manager, or the PED scandal in baseball, or the Miami Heat, or the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins, or the pros and cons of various barbecuing equipment. (I never heard about the Big Green Egg, for instance, until I came to this blog. $1,000 is rich for my blood for a grill, but still, now I'm informed.)
I'd be glad to read more about the UofM, and Ann Arbor.
Have an OT section, similar to diaries?
A few points:
1) I really appreciate this blog. I bleed maize and blue and remember trying to follow during the dark ages ( pre-web).
2) some people bitch and argue over the dumbest things. I might as well spend the afternoon in the salon.
3) most posters just want to get the info out there and find out what other fans think. You're not forced to read or comment on anything.
4) guaranteed that if somethings good on our planet people will try their best to F it up.
5) Bball and Fball recruiting is amazing right now and I, for one, am extremely excited about the future.
6) this is America fergodsakes. If you don't like it go elsewhere or create your own blog so we don't have to read posts by men on their periods.
7) I love you all, Go Blue!
I'm guilty of making comments that don't really contribute to the topic, but it's not always horribly negative. With it being offseason, there are going to be people that come here looking for entertainment, but since they won't necessarily get that with content, they'll look to busting people's balls (short of trolling hopefully). As other people have mentioned, the old point system would definitely limit that by bringing back consequences of posting said comments.
Additionally, I do think the mods are becoming too aggressive with their moderating, which I had never thought before. BiSB's style was to make his presence known (with those we can't have nice things warnings) and help keep the convo on topic and pc. In my eyes, the newer crop of mods jump in way to quick with little to no warning to get rid of a lot of things before it can turn into anything worthwhile. That could just be a product of how everyone is starting to behave on the boards, but something needs to change.
This is a diverse community with a lot of different personalities and opinions. Some people like to complain to the point where they can bitch about bitching that hasn't even been bitched yet. For the most part, though, there are a lot of insightful opinions here.
I usually just skim over the nitpicking and ad hominem attacks that go on here. Also, I usually just read a thread, post if I feel like it, and don't bother coming back to see if I have been "snarked" by anyone. I hear I've missed a couple of long ad hominem attacks on me that way, but what did I really "miss?"
So, my advice to those who don't like the complaining: don't bother reading it. You can usually tell in the first sentence of a comment whether or not it is going to be a whine or a rant. You then have the option to continue or stop reading the comment.
I come here for two reasons: the main blog and the de facto "curation blog" called the MGoBoard. We get the Michigan Wolverines News of the Day, every day, within ten minutes of it showing up anywhere, curated by somewhere around 4,000 users. It isn't perfect, but it's the best sports blog I've seen.
I usually don't complain, however, when pictures of the moon begin popping up as OT threads, then I feel obligated to question the threadworthiness.
I got bombed in that thread as well.
(and deduct two points from that person’s total)
Granted, there is a place for thoughtful criticisms that can improve the thread. But the biggest nitpickers usually do not provide these. Rather, they litter the thread with:
---mindless, knee-jerk imitations of prior posts
or- repetitions, for the hundredth time, of moth-eaten slogans, like: : “loo long”, “spelling mistake or” bad title”
--or words with only one of two possible meanings: “hooray” or “boo“
So, often the posters that most deserve to be negged are the ones doing the most negging themselves. Also, they.would be highly responsive to a few negs for their own overuse of them. They often are point-a-holics, whose greatest aspiration in life is to either imbibe or take away points on anonymous message boards
