I was able to +1 Brian, but other than I see no other +/- control/moderation either
meta: Slashcomments implemented
There's a little drop box under the comment. Choose a description and points are applied accordingly (I think).
EDIT: After I posted this I don't see the moderation stuff.
for no reason other than it sounded awesome.
So this means our posbang and negbang threads can become even more sophisticated!
I for one am excited for the first redundantbang thread
But you're still at -1. :/
How you can be "+5, normal". How do you plus a person with "normal"?
I've "normal"-ified a couple of posts at +2 or +3, and normal or no, they stayed at +2 or +3. I think the word used to describe the score is a composite of all the mod votes the post has received, so if there's 6 "insightful" and 1 "trolling", it's probably going to show "insightful", for instance. Further investigation is clearly needed.
I'm having the same problem - after you comment on a thread, you can no longer moderate any of the comments on that thread.
I see a box with "Normal" and a looong dropdown menu which has: "Offtopic, Flamebait, Trolling, Redundant, Insightful, Interesting, Informative, Funny, Overrated, Underrated." Then a "Moderate" button.
Edit: Or at least I did a minute ago.
It appears that I can moderate in almost all the other threads. The ones that I cannot for certain at the moment is this thread and the Bri'onte Dunn thread. Are you able to moderate the others?
I checked a few other threads and don't see that stuff at the moment. Perhaps it is being worked on?
I looked for a "ballin" tag in the moderation wheel, but didn't find one so I gave you a "funny" rating. Your score increased by one.
I just tested the moderate button out on you... my bad.
Can't wait to check out the new features and for pos-bangs and neg-bombs to return. you da man, brian
Scarlet and grey? Must be Angry MGoBlog Hating God playing with us. Don't worry, I'm on the Android app!
Scarlet and grey? Must be Angry MGoBlog Hating God playing with us. Don't worry, I'm on the Android app!
The first post ever to attain greyed out status (even if momentarily) on MGoBlog. This time next year, there will have been thousands. But yours will always be the first, wear it like a badge.
5. f7u12 faces now work
If you're using IE, you deserve what happens to you.
but unfortunately the draconian IT policies at my new job forbid the use of standardized browsers. The scarlet and gray is truly hideous. At least I no longer live in Ohio.
says it can't use IE.
Until they obediently respond to my demand to be able to read college football internet sites during work, I don't have any choice!
U-M, because their list of supported (and recommended) browsers on their NEW career system are-
OS X 10.3 (Panther)
OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
OS X 10.6(Snow Leopard)
Not yet vendor certified
Not yet vendor certified
(How can you put in a system less than a year ago and still have IE as your preferred browser??)
The names and pictures of the users seem a little small, and kind of cluttery though.
EDIT: Once you comment in a thread you lose the ability to moderate a comment, thats been the case for me atleast. I've tried a couple different times and both times the "Moderate" button disappeared.
Same problem here once I commented I can't moderate this thread.
Will this new moderation setup eventually be implemented on the MGODROID app? I don't see a change on it as of now.
We will be looking into these new changes and how we may be able to implement them in the near future, In the meanwhile, hang tight! More MGoDroid updates are coming soon!
that the MGoDroid guys (and perhaps ladies... I don't discriminate) kick ass!! I emailed them about a problem I was having w/ the app and heard back from them three times in about an hour to make sure everything was squared away.
Love the new app, MGoDroid team!!
Again, thank you and your team for all of your effort on the MGoDroid app. +1
I guess I need to get my point total up so that I can partake in these cool new features.
This is overwhelming. I just want to click buttons and do all these things we could never do before.
Yes, I lived a sheltered childhood.
This looks a million times better than the pale blue!
The blue had a cleaner look. This looks cluttered. I especially don't like the red around the avatars. No Red please.
Eek. I like most of this, but the up-down voting is much easier to read&vote on. This moderation idea where people pick from options is a cool idea, but too complex imo. I think a simple up-down vote is still the way to go (see: reddit and its success), but maybe im in the minority
Also, i think the old score placement worked better (i.e. It was off tothe side, and in the same place for every post. It made it faster&easier to find new posts. Once again, its just my opinion.
maybe the "Moderate" options provide more information that is helpful to Brian as to what's really going on. Someone getting neg-fucked all the way to Columbus doesn't really tell much other than douchey comment.
This post currently has a 'Trolling' label with a +2 score, which seems contradictory. Is this new system of moderation, designed to weed out trolls, instead going to foster a new breed of super-trolls who can make even the most seasoned message board posters scream in agony? Film at 11.
I agree. Options are bad.
Option is good, but only if Denard is running it.
I see what you did here. +1 to you
It's just too busy. Personally, I really don't like having everything everywhere. Simplicity doesn't seem conducive to better moderation, but at some point, too much is too much.
I actually think it could be useful once Brian makes moderation affect MGoPoints. Similar to Slashdot, an interesting, insightful, or informational post could increase your point total more than just posting an unrelated funny picture. Simlarly, pure trolling could hurt your point total more than mistakenly double posting, although it would be nice if both were greyed out.
April 27, 2011 and you were there. For the poor misguided souls using IE, it is even a red letter day, so to speak.
but I've been using IE 9 for the last week or so because I hate Chrome and I noticed Firefox 4 basically uses 400 MB of RAM at all times. It's actually not bad, and works great with the new comment module. I even gave you moderation for being funny
All the Dude ever wanted...Was his New Tab back.
Thanks for the hard work Brian.
Lets see what happens.
My head is asplode.
...but, to me, a simple up/down vote still seems like the best way to go.
Appreciate the effort though on always trying to improve the site! And I'm glad the "new" marker is back!! I do miss the "top" button however.
What is this new brave world we are living in now? Nice to have the new tab back but this moderate button is going to take some getting used to.
This change is good. The drop box moderation seems a bit cumbersome but I am sure we'll adjust.
What is all this talk about IE?? Is there a new crappy browser out there called internet exploder? How do I download it! /s
Retired October 2010:
Retired April 2011:
Wolvy's at a bit of a loss as to how to plus now.
swipe at the drop-down menu, swipe at an option, then swipe at the "Moderate" button.
He's going to get tired.
:-( for Wolvy
:D for new Slashcomments!
Liked the up/down arrows better.
Agreed. its brian's blog, but if enough people object, it might be worth putting to a vote or something. also, im sure its just a bug, but i couldnt moderate you because i have already posted in this thread.
what is the little dollar shaped symbol in the top right corner?
EDIT; Yup, your ability to "moderate" goes away once you post (at least in Chrome).
What the f- is permalink?
It's not a bug, that's the way it is on slashdot too, and it is by design. The idea is that if you are part of a discussion you are no longer an objective moderator. Hopefully it's an option that Brian can turn off though.
It might be useful to stop people from downvoting every reply that disagrees with them. But it's probably more viable on Slashdot, which literally has millions of users. I'm guessing that if people that comment on a thread here can't moderate it, there will be few other interested people left to moderate.
All the maize and blue on these comments -- my eyes are delighted! Well, except for all the tOSU red...
Such as "ennui, "RBUAS-esque," and "Lloyd Brady-based," but beyond that I love it.
It just dawned on me today that your name is WatersDemos. For the past six months, I've been reading it as WalterDemos.
there needs to be a WTF option.
Go Blue !
Just means you'll get posts grayed out and called trolling when someone just disagrees with the opinion. It makes it look like more than it really is (with a downvote) - I don't like your post. Ideally that's not how voting/moderating goes...but come on, we all know better.
I think I'm going to hate, not the trolling choice, but how people use it. Your comment was moderated as trolling which it clearly was not. The headaches comin on...
If we random Internet people are just honest this will work perfectly.
Can I set it to un-collapse comments that have been neg-bombed and might be worth reading (bombing) - maybe ones more than -5 or -10?
Collapsing prescient one word posts like "nice" would also be a good option...
It's taken me about 3 years to get the points I have now, so I'll probably be able to +/- people in late 2012/early 2013.
theory might be that it's because the post sux, but often it's the lightning-rod stuff that the conversation builds AROUND. Someone care to explicamelo?
love the new setup! the only problem I am encountering is the fact that I can't comment once I have posted in the thread - same issues that some have discussed below.
Is anyone able to comment after posting or is this something that needs to be fixed for the whole website?
Brian stole embiggen from EDSBS. Just sayin'.
Both stole it from Jebediah Springfield.
South Park did "Simpsons did it first" first.
Awesome! Thanks Brian.
Does anyone else think the kid in the middle row all the way to the right looks like Shawn Hunwick in monuMental's wallpaper? Or do I just have serious problems with letting go Michigan Hockey right now?
I'm going to agree with the general sentiment that options are not great in this case. I just want to say whether a post is good or bad and whether someone should get/lose points. I don't have a huge problem with this method, but I'd prefer simple up/down again.
Also, am I not able to show newest posts at the top anymore? That was great.
I can no longer see the moderation boxes, btw. There were there this morning (on my home computer) but now they are not (on my work computer).
Dont hate the playa hate his employer who has not seen the light of day w/ Chrome and Firefox.
Thing that pisses me off the most is that our IT uses FF BUT we peons who cannot install crap onto our machines have to use IE8 (full disclosure: IE9 really isnt that bad).
Edit: Ewww lil girl squeal I like how it highlights your post in yellow, sort of like the Chrome Extension but I'm not vain enough to have actually added myself to that list.
Can someone help explain something.
I don't get this whole collapsing thing. The lowest threshold I can choose is -1? So once something goes to -2 we can no longer see it? Am I interpretting that correctly?
edit: seriously, someone "negged" me for trolling? This is a legitimate question. Something that I also thought about, how are we to neg-bomb someone to Bolivia if the thread collapses after -2, or am I again still interpretting this wrongly.
i think i like it.
yay, and all that; but there's too much scarlet up in here.
damn work computer, and no control. IE6 and nothing else. couldn't even get my flash player updated without opening a help-desk ticket and waiting two weeks.
think i'm gonna quit this job.
edit: it's IE7, but still...
The Score label does not seem to change when you upvote/downvote someone unless you are the first moderater, which initially creates the first Score label.
For example, you had a Score: 1 with no label, which means that no one moderated your post. I just upvoted you with "Insightful". This created a Score: 2 Insightful label.
What, if anything, changes the Score label now? If 10 people upvote you with "Funny" does the label still remain "Insightful"?
Many things, Brian.
But FYI: I do not have the OSU color scheme of which you speak. The subject lines are true maize & blue, the only red being the "new" button. I know I have the most recent IE, whatever that is (one of the things wrong with me is I've lost count). For comparison, I'll check the color scheme out at work tomorrow where the computer system is even more primitive than my own.
But it was unnecessary - up and down votes that sum for userid's is all that's needed. This new thing is juvenile
whhheeee....is this a posbang?
He's embiggened his role with his cromulent performance!
A lot of us don't have a browser choice at work Brian.
Additional moderation tags for your consideration:
like having votes, but really wonder how the link between user points and posts are going to work.
Is something negative like troling or redundant really as bad as some other items like just gross stupidity or insensitive comments?
I think I'm too lazy to use the "moderate" function. I think it would be neat/hilarious if we had the option of "other" and giving our own explanation, and if you could see who voted what. That might be useless, just my opinion though.
I've often said you should be able to see who has up/down voted your post, similar to how the votes are currently available to see for the first post in a thread.
Holy crap, about 10 people got collapsed for allegedly trolling this post. I'll have to set my sensitivity lower.
Would it be possible to flip where the comment heading and the score report are located? It's weird to have to read from the far left and then move down and over to continue reading. Small point, I know, but an important one. VERY important.
I'm most pleased that the red "New" indicator is back.
I think it would be helpful to put the effect of the labels in the dropdown like "Normal +1".
I've been "moderating" various users to try to figure what the values are and what triggers the Score: label like "Insightful", "Normal", etc. when you have multiple points.
So, what are the values?
My reaction to your first sentence was "I know, awesome, right?" even though you clearly didn't mean it that way.
Because it is not only insightful, but IMO underrated no matter how many votes it gets. However, I don't think you point total changed...
What about an 'agree' option? I wouldn't want a 'disagree' option because that would produce unnecessary negging, but I think agreeing would be better than having to either comment or go with 'insightful'.
did anyone else have to do one of the prove that your human words to post. Those are going to start really pissing me off soon
1000 comments per page option. Nice touch.
How do we view page 2 (and previous ones) of the message board now? The links to those pages don't seem to work properly.
It seems like a reddit-like commenting system is something more Drupal sites would want.
Why not open source it through the Drupal site? Even if you pay for it, by open sourcing it, more eyes will be on it and it'll likely be better.
Does anyone else feel kinda judgemental/bitchy with all these new moderation options? I just mod'd someone for being offtopic... and felt like an asshole :/
For some reason I've lost the ability to moderate on every thread. Would this be due to someone moderating both my posts in this thread (and many other seemingly innocent posts) troll? Or is something wrong with my computer/network?
EDIT: And this post appeared at score 0, as opposed to score 1 for the other posts. Very much making it look like this is karma related.
This is the second post of yours I noticed was grayed and at zero. The other comment about trolling was actually moderated as trolling, which seemed ridiculous, or possibly a joke, so I plussed you back up to one.
Edit: so a random troll is running through the boards marking your posts troll... Haha...great. :/
Thanks, I can moderate again. Now I'm off to help out the other victims...
I feel somehow trite selecting funny for a plus. Almost like I've made the joke too obvious.
But I like how your own posts are in maize. That combined with the "new" returning should make scrolling through much easier.
Those two things definitely help a lot. If we can keep them and bring back post numbers, that would be great.
but there are FAR too many options. You could cut it down even just to something like Good, Bad and Ugly. Good, Bad and Troll. Whatever. I don't think all the specific explanations are necessary: if a post has good votes, I'm curious enough to read it; if it has bad votes, it's hidden and I don't need to read it. The Troll option could just make it easier for you to aim the banhammer.
In other words: scientific precision (eight hundred specific moderation options) isn't needed where blunt force (up/down/troll) can make it work.
Yeah, some of these options are too much and end up being a little confusing. If you call a post "Overrated," are you saying it's bad, or just good but not great? What about "Underrated" - is that good, but not quite "Funny"? And "Normal" - is that a good thing?
"Good", "Bad", and "Troll" would seem to work fine.
Oh...wait. I guess that's not quite what you meant.
my little comment drop box has apparently disappeared.. is anyone else having that issue? It was working about 10 mins ago and now is nowhere to be found
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I for one think it looks great.
When I post a new comment, it comes up as zero even though I've not commented on that thread before. Thus, it is auto-collapsed because obviously zero is less than 1. I don't understand why this is. Any help with that?
Any chance you can change the skins/color for the comment outline? On my computer (OS X, Mozilla 4) it's a really really light grey and very difficult to differentiate between parent and child comments, especially when certain threads are several comments long w/ several different levels. Something slightly darker (maybe the blue from the header) would make it much easier to see which comments are at which levels.
Really not cool to see that team in ohio's color all over mgoblog. just saying.
I like it
