Meta: Site upgrade coming soon?

Submitted by Magnus on

I noticed this morning that the voting function is completely kaput, and MGoPoints have disappeared. I also noticed that Brian has not posted anything since Wednesday. To go along with the post a few weeks ago that the current version of Drupal would no longer be updated, are we to assume that a site upgrade is coming soon? When the functions stop working and Brian disappears for a few days, I have to think that something important is happening. (Or maybe Brian just has the flu.)

I'm not demanding a site upgrade. Free content is free content. I'm just wondering if there's some impending news.

I know someone said that it is definitely being worked on, but I would guess that they would NOT plan to do the upgrade this weekend, just in case last night's game ended differently. Though maybe in a drunken stupor afterwards they decided to fuck it and just do it.

Magnus, would love to see a site upgrade. I emailed last Tuesday, asking just for a status report. Here's most of my email:

It would be nice to have some content at the site laying out when you anticipate the site being upgraded. Possible topics:
  • Timeframe? (March, April, a year from now? Whenever? Never?)
  • Server upgrade.
  • How and when points system will work.
  • Link functionality. (i.e., either remove listed links, or fix them).
  • Page down functionality.
  • Ability to link video in created posts (rather than in the thread itself).
  • Design elements.
  • Tell us if funding is needed.
  • Functionality on mobile phones.
  • Way for users to communicate with each other?

So far, I haven't heard back. But hopefully we'll hear something soon.

I do find it surprising that some of these issues aren't more openly discussed. People have been asking some of these questions for months, if not years. Obviously, the voting and points issues are recent, but the page down function, video embedding, etc. have not worked for a few years, at least.

and it will wipe out all remaining shreds of the blog.    or not.

magnus, i have to think that as savvy as brian et al are, and as this has been his love and passion for a decade +, there has to be some new whiz-bang deal coming together.  would be nice if he'd share some of the details, but it's not like he's going to change professions.

I do assume something is up, since I just got an email about losing all my MGoPoints and the site sort of looking lost right now.

That said, he also has a 1-month old at home; I don't expect much productivity either.

While my friends are spending thousands of dollars on their screaming, pooping babies (bless their hearts), my wife and I are planning our next vacation together.  But hey, whatever floats your boat.

I remember reading all the advice to the father to be thread a few months ago. My general takeaway was why on earth would someone voluntarily sign up for this? Having said that I'm sure my wife and I will someday have a kid but I'm perfectly happy to not have to share my wife with anyone at this point.

Lol You're just young. We didn't even discuss having kids for the first 5yrs we were married and at one point weren't sure we'd have kids. It's just that they don't have to be a burden either. It's not what floats our boat it's viewing our son as joining our life rather than being an albatross that ruined it. That said I see MGOBrian is having new fatherhood nights and odd middle of the night Twitter battles with struggling stand up comedians, so maybe that has impacted the site and his time to work on it. Lol

This place is rife with folks who can't wait to show the world they love kids, dogs, gays, straights, cats, koalas, band geeks, band jocks, regular jocks, nerds, turds, heroes, zeroes and anything else society deems the "in" thing to support or hand wring over at this given moment. If your post remotely mentions any of these key words - however innocuous the comment is - they MUST flock to brow beat and concern troll you for not heaping anything but gushing praise on said subject.

I currently work soley to provide for my kids.  Otherwise I would move back in with  Chunks the Hobo.

Marriage also makes you brush your teeth which has the side effect of lowering your chance of cardiac arrest.

It's complicated ...but you should try the kid thing.  It really boosts your long term immune system.  Results may vary.

I do have twins..and your reality is what it is. New babies are tough whether you have one or two..you just deal. It's only after you have a couple that you say "meh..it's only one". The first time around is a pretty big adjustment.
