META: Site improvement: How about an ignore function?

Submitted by aawolve on

Sorry to start a second "meta" thread in the last two days, but I want to get this in before I neg until I'm back under 100 points. Would anyone else be interested in an "ignore" function that blocks unwanted users' posts from sight? I feel like the cost for negbang has allowed some of our more timid trolls to crawl out from under their bridges, and this would be an easy way to increase my enjoyment of this board. I've seen it on other sites, it seems to work well. Just a thought.

Also, I'm sure someone can drum up a Greasemonkey script to do this. I've seen them for use with phpbb boards. I'm not sure how adaptable those scrips would be to this forum.

I think an ignore function would be bad for Brian's business.  If people ignore posters they don't like, then there would be fewer arguments and, therefore, fewer page hits and fewer ad views.

I believe it exists in a less granular implementation, in that mods can hide all posts by a user. Not sure how difficult it would be to add that to normal user functionality since I've never poked around Drupal before.

It would be glorious though.

There are all kinds of other things I'd like to be able to do too.

  • Hide a user until they've got > x points or been a member for > y days.
  • Hide all posts that have negative points, or < -10 or something.
  • Get notified when someone responds to a comment I've made. (This would make arguing SO much easier!)

Anyway, blah blah blah. I'm sure there are some improvements in mind. That's just a starter wish list for a perfect world scenario.

I can see a couple of ideas that would be useful, but in another month, we'll hit the long dark of the offseason.  Trolls briefly light up that dark with their acrid, sulfer scented flames.  I don't want to miss out on that.

That said, the thread creation minimum could go up and I wouldn't complain.

I should post more often...but if I can know if people have replied to me in my e-mail, that would be even better.

But, I do think that it would be good to be e-mailed with replies, and even, perhaps, be able to respond by e-mail.  (This might even help us when site goes on lock down?)

it doesn't really work. You end up with a long list of ignores and then more annoying people sign up every day and you spend all the time on the site just adding to the ignore list.

Then a guy you ignore has an epiphany and says something funny and you miss big chunks of a good thread unless you then turn off your ignore...

I thought the whole site was on ignore over the past week or so when we couldnt log on.  Drove me nuts to watch the entire Hoke saga unfold without being able to render my increadibly brilliant insight to the goings on.

I also have a suggestion: an alert that tells us when someone has responded to one of our comments, or does that already exist and i just can't find it?

unfortunately, i won't be able to read any responses bc i rarely go back to old threads.
