Meta: redirect ads affecting mobile browser?

Submitted by JLo on

Over the last few days, when I visit mgoblog from Chrome on my (android) phone, I will get redirected to the appstore to download some mobile game or another.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  It doesn't happen every time, but maybe 1 out of 3 times I visit a new page on the site.  I don't experience this on any other web pages or using my desktop browser.

My suspicion is that some advertiser on the site has inserted some code that redirects mobile browsers to the app store, but I'm not sure how to prove it or which ads to blame.  Thoughts?

It's been happening to me for a couple months as well. Usually redirects to Candy Crush. I use an iPhone so it doesn't appear to be platform specific. EDIT: I use Safari and Chrome.

This happened to me yesterday--also Android.  It was redirected to the page for some sketchy-looking casino app on the appstore.

I've never been redirected, but I have noticed lately that for whatever reason, the front page takes forever to load on my mobile browser, essentially freezing the browser while it does so. It only happens on the front page, though; board posts and diaries work fine. Not sure if there's a script causing that, since it wasn't an issue until a few months ago (it wouldn't be the first time I've had issues on a mobile browser; for awhile there was a super-long string of text whenever I'd load a page that would cause the page to be incredibly zoomed out when it opened...).

Will try the suggested fix. My fix is to keep my finger on the screen until the page fully loads, which seems to thwart the redirect.

Been happening to me on Mobile for a while now.  Sometimes happens over and over so I just leave the site for a while and close out the Safari browser and sometimes it just happens once and will stop.

was wondering if it was just me...

That was the first reason I posted.

Now as for the second reason, maybe some mod can take notice and alert our fearless leader?  I doubt Brian is particularly keen on his readership being unwillingly redirected to download Game of War.

and iPhone.  The main page seems to load fine, but one of two things has recently happened to me: one, I have pop up add come up, usually for Words with Friends, or two, I get sent to the App Store.  This doesn't happen everytime, maybe 50%.

Has been happening on iOS for several months now, pretty annoying. I switched to the app from the mobile browser, which cut down the redirects.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one.  I have an Iphone 6 and everytime I click on a post, it redirects me to the app store.  It's been going on for a couple of months.  I thought my phone had a glitch or some kind of virus.  It's been really frustrating.

It is airpush. There are a few things you can do, first use an airpush detector to see if it's coming from an app you have. Next either delete the app or turn off notifications. I turned off notifications on my browser and the play store, haven't seen it since.

My understanding of airpush is that they use ads in your notification bar.  What I (and I assume others) am experiencing is a browser redirect: I visit mgoblog, then while the page is loading, the browser is redirected to some other website and eventually to the play store page for some mobile app.

Yes, this has been happening to me on my iPhone for a long time, and it's super annoying. Like you said, it doesn't happen every time, just some of the time. Thanks, OP, for posting about this. Hopefully Brian and the crew can fix this.

Is it just me or are there a lot more cookies loading on the site as well lately? A few of them have impeded performance to a point where I've blocked them, but then of course Flash seems to fail at a higher rate. Strangely enough, the ones I've had to block are among the known advertisers and sponsors too, like TiqIq.
