landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Why did you downvote it?
I was being sarcastic.
No system is perfect, least of all that one. Group think is, and forever will be, a folly of said system.
Nosce Te Group think.
I will admit that I used the moderation system that was in place until recently to actually moderate the board to some extent. Long strings of "-1 Flamebait", for example, got an extra careful look. Now, it's very easy to get disoriented reading straight comment threads without any "cue", if you will. Granted, much of the time, it was just general sniping, but now and again, it was burying an actual board offense.
I "prepare[d[ thy anus" for a different type of post than this ended up being. Glad I can return to normal.
Where's Jdon when you need him? Someone rev up the Jdon batsignal!
from before, as mentioned in the OP.
I was just hoping that Jdon would bring back his old avatar...the Rape Ewok avatar, that said Prepare Thy Anus.
It's time to change avatars... no one else knows that last one is from the Boston Lockdown this spring anyway...
my karma level!
I liked being able to pat people on the back for posting something insightful or funny without having to clutter up the board with a post that just says something like "+1 funny." I don't miss negging because I can stil do what I've always done, which is to respond to posts I don't like by finding out people's mailing addresses and then sending them a dead rat and/or a note that says, "please be more considerate :)."
Why do you have to post +1 Funny or any other former moderation tag? Wouldn't that clutter the board and would it not be 'funny' if the post wasn't made?
I don't make those posts, and no, the follow-up post of course has nothing to do with being funny. My point is that I Iiked being able to give positive feedback in some small way, i.e., upvoting, without cluttering up the board. The point of upvoting to me is not to say to the board, "hey, this post is (funny/insightful/etc.)" but rather to say to the poster "thanks for posting this" or "that made me laugh."
Is adulation really necessary? I don't understand why a comment needs any extra attention. If a commenter comments for the sole purpose of acclaim do they deserve any? If a poster posts to receive anything other than a question to lead to debate then why post? All other comments seem to fall into the pointless chasm that suck all other posts in with them.
Why do you hate fun?
There are differing ideas of fun are there not?
That doesn't sound like group think to Te Ipsum...sorry I'm throwing gutter balls tonight. Show me some football...please.
Yes. Yours, and the real one.
Why limit yourself to just two?
So we get more of the good stuff and less of the stupid stuff.
An array of mindless pictures and gifs are good posts? They would be considered good stuff?
I consider them good posts.
A simple man with simple ideals. Fair enough. Thanks for humoring me.
Can't we all just get along?
Whereas it takes two to tango if I don't fall prey to comments meant to evoke anger then get along we shall.
I'm happy to have elicited some sort of emotion from you.
Like "creepy stories."
Did that not fall into the time frame for off topic posts?
You were commenting on the value of off-topic posts in their entirety. And funny pics or birth threads or whatever have as much value as "creepy story" threads.
Wasn't I? I can't find what you're speaking of. You are certain of yourself but you have not been reading closely enough. You are confusing a post and an original post. At the very least there is some ambiguity with regards to a post but you assume a certainty from it.
I enjoy positive social interactions, though, like most of my fellow primates.
no really i hate them too
I miss the old voting system everyday. Every GodDamn long, hot day my friend.
Could just be me, but I liked when there were consequences for peoples posts/actions on the board. It allowed good posters to be rewared with lots of points shortly, and punished trolls to the point of Bolivia.
Is this blog learned enough to cast those people and their threads out? It used to be, but many of the intelligentsia of MGoBlog have abandoned their posts and have either left entirely or lurk, abashed at what this place has become.
It's hard to incentivize people to want to take ownership of a message board, especially one where idiocy has taken root. Common sense could take care of 80% of the problems on the board but this is the Internet so that is a pipe dream. I think there is still room for intellectual growth on the board without a Lord of the Flies-style realignment some fear. The old moderation system had just enough incentive - and silliness - to motivate people to make the right decisions for the board, cat pictures and all.
Or is the note attached to the rat?
Sometimes the note is written on the rat itself, but that's something I can only do if I have time.
The one thing I will point out is that with the most recent, yet now-defunct system that is meant to hide trolling comments and such, people would usually also neg comments simply because they disagreed with the point being made, often times not even replying or countering the opinion.
This was a very irritating habit that was never really addressed.
Seldom does a worthy post remain hidden. It may be in the red for a short time due to the actions of one or two people. If it was worth reading, other people will normally come along and breathe life into it. If it remains hidden, there is generally a message there. Of course, if it is my post, then all of those malcontents, misogamists and ne'er-so-wells are just wrong.
my "I survived Malwarefest 2011" t-shirt
MESS YOU UP!
If I could I would up vote this. Very meta
So should I relax thy anus?
How do you intent to pull that off?
Hopefully on a toilet, for everyone's sake.
I don't care to comment further.
There seems to be a fairly common misunderstanding of the pronoun "thy."
Pardon me. I must go get my English teacher now that she's jumped off of a bridge. I'm not having the best of nights around here, I see.
I'm confused. Should I relax or tense up my anus? Which is the best way to prepare?
Dear Leader has blessed us with his grace and removed the shackles of our filthy capitalist points system. Add this to the list of his undying exploits! The proletariat is now truly equal, and together we shall transcend our base animal impulses and improve as internet-commenters. The fate of the motherland depends on it!
I take the opportunity to abase myself in the presence of Dear Leader. As it is through him that we shall reach the higher plane, and it is through him that my comments may float upon the heavens that is the internet, which was invented by Dear Leader after he shot a hole-in-one on a par-5.
Before moderation chop wood, carry water. After moderation chop wood, carry water.
Before I was moderated, mountains were mountains and rivers were rivers. In moderation, mountains are not mountains and rivers are not rivers. Now, mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers.
Nosce Te Ipsum, it's not just because I'm high, but that was my favorite comment of this thread.
AND USE ALL CAPS AND LOTS OF EXCLAMATION POINTS WHILE WE'RE DOING IT!!!!!!!!!!
Brian is the 1%!!!
I don't need a picture to show everyone how witty I am.
I have spoken with Fearless Leader about this issue, and I can confirm that both the restoration of voting and the site upgrade are still in the works. The voting thing might return at ANY MOMENT, but the site upgrade might not happen for a while.
As a bonus, though, the site upgrade will probably skip Drupal 7 completely and move directly to Drupal 8. For those who aren't technological savvy, just know that Drupal 8 is one full Drup better than Drupal 7.
We'll be lucky to see it before Drupal 9.
MGoBlog: Fixing the points system since Robinson's beaver.
Which will still be before Dr. Dre releases the Detox album.
Not enough Drups.
Only nice thing about no moderation system? Double post doesn't get downvoted!
[takes of pants]
Duke Nuke'em forever is TOTALLY coming out this year guys, we mean it.
on windows 95? or do I need to upgrade to 98?
Is that the value of a Drup in 2012 or a value of a Drup in 2013 after the great CMS market crash?
Y'all should have been around during Haloscan days.
Not only could you not plus or minus anything, half the time you weren't even sure what the goddamn topic was that was being argued.
True, but the football live blogs were so much more intimate.
I thought about a thread just for the pic but decided this was good enough. How would you like to be a DB and see him catch a ball in stride?
Board in the "old days", though I think that with the aforementioned "old system", I would + and - more posts, and post more myself.
I was afraid to post as much under the old system because I feared a massive negbang. I would take more time when posting comments to make sure they actually made sense. I do think the old system limited massive freak outs like the post scrimmage thread. I don't think I have ever witnessed so many people worry about the weight of one player in the whole time I have been frequenting MGoBlog.
I will always have mixed emotions about full-fledged, no-limit "peer moderation," because it is reminiscent of "Lord of the Flies," but it is necessary to keep trolls at bay. The two situations in which I don't like seeing wholesale negging, though, are when someone reports bad news and people "shoot the messenger," or when someone's well-thought, non-inflammatory, honest opinion is trashed because someone doesn't agree with it.
but I still love the "old", "wild west" comment system.
Sure there was some group think (although often people cried "groupthink" whenever they posted an unpopular comment) & how you phrase your dissention can limit your negging.
But some of the pos-bangs were epic. They created MGoMemes, and ultimately fostered a sense of community that most other blogs (and certainly sport-oriented ones) can only dream of.
I actually think the community aspect of the forums are so valuable a commodity that I'm surprised a smart guy like Brian hasn't given it a higher priority.
but what do I know, I'm just a pasty quadraped.
My mouse has a bit of a connection problem, and double clicks by itself now. Yikes.
This is the funniest thing I have read in months.
... our long MGoPointsNightmare will soon be over.
RichRod ruined Michigan.
Chris Weber should have his jersey hung at Crisler.
Devin should have been the starting QB vs. Alabama last year, as has been proven since he took over the position.
Did you hear that new song "In the Big Hous?! RAWWKKS!!!"
deserves more than 1 point. It's worth exactly the same as one that says "NCAA Sux" or "Saint Urbz hallowed be his name." The system we have now does not incentivize people to create better content, better analysis, better humor than their neighbor, for everyone is treated exactly the same in the end.
It's a crying shame that diaries are worth only 2 points. I've written a few of those things and they take A LOT of work to finish. A good diary should be worth at least 20-30.
What does it really matter? Do you only write the diaries for the meaningless points, and not to provide content for the readers/show some revelation or statistical analysis/provide your researched opinion on a topic?
In the end, our species will go extinct and the universe will die a heat death, but that is beyond the scope of the problems we face at hand, namely, encouraging smarter discussion and better content on a sports message board.
-1 Misspelled Webber.
Distract the masses by creating a new Rich Rod thread. By the time anyone realizes what just happened, it will be CMU week.
Did L. Carr really leave the cupboard blank when RR took over? I am dying to know what the ppl think.
"Nearly a year later our anuses remained at the ready..."
and this is where I died.
Bevel thy guilt and offer burnt sacrifices, dear MGoDenizens, and perhaps our Lord and Blogger will turn an ear to our fervent cries. (But realistically, nothing can probably happen until the next offseason at this point.)
I doubt this will ever happen, but as a Redditor, I really think the Reddit ranking algorithm is great at making good threads and comments more visible and at the top and shitty ones at the bottom or hidden. I would be awesome to implement some version of that IMO.
I used to be one of the most vocal proponents of the old voting system, but I've seen so many promises not followed through on and so many deadlines delayed that I've just given up. If we see any sort of improvement in the next year (or hell, if we see voting back at all) I'll eat my hat, but I don't see it happening.
it IS going to happen. If BiSB wrote it, it must be so.
And when it does happen, I'm going to seek you out and neg one of your comments, even if it's brilliant.
Being kinda new here, what the fuck is everyone talking about?
anuses or ani?
Is this turning into an MGoConfessions thread without fear of retribution?
I like Nickelback, and there is nothing any one of you can do to cave this thought
Wow - good stuff!
Because there are no voting cures,
My posts worth the same as yours.
There porpose in life

They're power is gone,
and fights continue,
with every moran.
Soundz lik someon fergot deir medication dis morning.
Ugh what a waste that this is the first thing I clicked on this morning...
We take MGoblog from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you... the people. the Blog is yours. None shall interfere. Do as you please. Start by storming 11W, and freeing the oppressed! Step forward those who would serve. For and army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The posters will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great Blog... it will endure. MGOblog will survive!
Strawberries. Are packed. WITH FIBER!
I miss the WLA
When the MGoSecretPolice are unleashed, they will go to this thread first to root out the nonbelievers.
My first one in months. That felt great.
