Meta MGoApp: Paid version to get rid of ads?

Submitted by MichiganMan2011 on

Hey there,

Is there any way we can get a paid MGoApp published for those of us who are willing to pay a few bucks to remove the mobile ads on the iPhone/Android apps? Would happily pitch in $2-$10 given how much I use the app, to be rid of the annoying ads at the bottom everytime I open it. And judging by the number of times I click on them (0) it would probably be worth it to the site to get an upfront fee from me than to count on ad clicks...

Would anyone else be interested in such a "feature"?

I thought that was pretty funny.

Fun fact:  5% of app users use the app more than 20 times a day.

Those users probably account for a large percentage of the app's income.  If they chose to pay a one time charge, that's potentially a huge amount of recurring income that would be lost.  Hell, someone like M-Wolverine probably accounts for a $1/day of income.  I would have to charge him about $1000 to remove the ads (these numbers are completely made up).

Another fun fact:  In the last year, the app has been opened only 28 times in Bolivia.

I don't know how many of you go elsewhere, but there are hardly any ads here.  Brian and crew give better info than the paid sites, and don't charge anything.  I would like to at least see a permanent Zon BOB on this site.  I wouldn't object at all if there were more ads here.

Brian deserves to make a very good living at this blog.  I don't think clicking on a few ads that interest you is too much to ask, on the app or the website.

Elaydin does all the work for the app and its support, and splits it with the blog. The revenue stream is pretty small--we get a lot more if you load the regular site, more so since I've been steadily getting our rates up on those, and there's two of them, and we keep 100% of the return. That said, Elaydin does a wonderful job with the app, and the latest redesign I thought was fantastic. It's a very user-friendly way to view the site. We got what we paid for: an awesome site app.

Appreciate the reply elaydin. I definitely understand your reasoning. I had been skeptical that mobile ads generated you all that much money, but it looks like that isn't the case. Knowing that, I'll send a few clicks your way now and then to do my part for such a great product.

P.S. The math geek in me would kill for a diary on some of the statistics you teased with here (impressions over time, users by country, etc.). Happy to donate a few bucks if you can make that happen ;)

But I'm in the process of a phone upgrade, so I imagine my on the go checks will pick it right back up.

I every so often hit one of the ads, but they're actually well done that they do the job they're supposed to, but never feel like they're overwhelming the App.  They're about as good as ads can be on an App. (I mean I've seen some where every time you turn to something else an ad covers the whole screen.)

In fact, I had forgotten they were there until you made this thread. NOW I'M SO ANNOYED BY THEM!!! (obvious /s) If you really need to pay for that then go ahead, but I find them really easy to ignore.

...the ads are so unobtrusive that I barely notice them. And when I do, I'll even occasionally give it a click to support the blog/developer. As far as advertisements on free apps go, MgoBlog is very tame...

I would gladly pay for the app, but if the ads bring in more caysh, then, I'm good with that.

If you could make a free ap with no ads and moar Kate U., then, I'd oddly be far in favor of that solution.  Even throw in some Lucy Liu, Sierra Romero and the Women's Gymnastics team, and perhaps dated pics of Madonna when she was, you know, full of herself but actually justified in thinking it.  (Saw her concert this year... got an eyefull of her naked butt... still trying to shake that off.  Ewwwwww.)

I'd gladly pay a one-time fee of $10-20 to remove ads, or a monthly subscription of $1-2.  I don't know how that would compare to the revenue that currently comes from the app, but it's not nothing.

I'm all for an in-app payment (maybe annually) that removes the ads. Also push notifications for "Hello:" posts would be awesome in the paid version.
