meta: instaban criteria

So I banned "mikefromaa' even though is account was a year and half old. In an effort to make this useful, this is why, from Tom's post on Roh:

BY: mikefromaa

TITLE: At this point who even cares

BODY:

Just leave then.  You're a lousy linebacker anyway.  You're absolutely right, your better at defensive end.  This is saying next to nothing.  This defense will be equally lousy with or without you.

This sort of thing is an instant banning. If I have to explain why I'd like to ban you but you're being all crafty-like.

I'm hungry and read instaban as Cinnabon.

I do not know what this means.

What I do know is that comments like those are completely unproductive and borderline inflammatory despite how few people take them seriously.

Well deserved.

Especially in this time of crisis.

I get why, we can't have people inconsistently using the incorrect forms of  "you're" and "your"

Honestly, I don't understand why people make comments like this. Its terrible to say things about a great kid who, for everything that I've seen, loves the maize and blue. I'd hate to think about our D-line for the next few years if its not achored by Roh on the outside.

Just leave Brian.  You're a lousy blogger anyway.  You're absolutely right, you're better at engineering.  This is saying next to nothing.  This website and sports blogging world will be equally lousy with or without you.

Just kidding of course, I love you Brian. No homo. Kudos for keeping crap like this off the site.

Good move for what it's worth. Look say and complain all you want about coaches as they are getting paid and are professionals. Anytime I hear someone bad mouth a 19-20 year old kid I assume two things: one they never played sports themselves: two if they did then they are just plain ignorant.

I just realized I am officially old (30) after referring to them as kids. FML

If you do not see much difference in what Brian says about players and what this guy said then I think that you need to take a look at how the message is delivered.

While I agree that Brian may be a little harsh on different players at times he ALWAYS backs it up with numbers and analyisis to support his opinion.  I mean, just look at the amount of effort that goes into the UFRs - I hardly have the time needed to put in the effort to read them let alone put the together like Brian does.

Contrast this with mikefromaa going off on Roh like he did because he was upset that he might be leaving and that is where you see the problem.

My first reaction when I saw TomVH's diary entry was F&$^, not again, but I was not going to go off on the player like that.  Maybe he is having a tough year, but the kid appears to be working his butt off to help this team - and Tom said give the rumors no weight.  That was good enough for me to not even have to worry about the rumour.

So as long as you back it up with "facts", it is okay to be a dick to a kid on the football team? Nice.

"Maybe he is having a tough year, but the kid appears to be working his butt off to help this team"

Same could be said about Ezeh and others

What I am saying is that if you support your arguements with some facts, or at least some well thought out analysis, you are not being a dick.  Personally, I am much more willing to listen to anybody argue with me as long as they have some well thought out ideas to support their position.  I thought I was clear on that in my previous post when I said that Brian was harsh on players occasionally.

Heck, even in Brian's post at the top of this page he laid out the reasons that he banned mikefromaa.  All I am saying, is that even though he may be harsh at times it is a whole different scenerio then what mikefromaa did.

And yes, if you can backup your arguement with facts and well thought out analysis it is ok to express your opinion.  However, I do not consider that being a dick.  Saying Roh is a lousy linebacker with no supporting arguements is being a dick.

Splitting hairs? You've got to be kidding me. When Brian says something to the effect of Ezeh is a terrible linebacker because of these 10 plays he directly or indirectly screwed up is about an ocean apart from a rumor of Roh leaving and saying GTFO you POS (paraphrasing obviously). If Ezeh were to decide to leave the team, which is unlikely as he's a senior, I'm sure Brian would write something about how he seemed to be a very intelligent well spoken person and he had the hard luck of having x number of DC's in y number of years. If you can't see the difference in approach between the two I don't know what to tell you. But they are not at all similar.

But if you use facts to be a dick, you're still being a dick.  I don't think anyone like Gordie has any problem with saying "player W did X, Y, and Z", and should be replaced, coached up, benched, whatever.  But when you continue to harp on them, and take personal shots, sometimes it starts going up to the line, if not actually crossing it.

This in no way defends they guy who was banned.  It was horrible to say, and serves no purpose.  Just saying that being insulting and illogical is worse, but being logically insulting isn't all peaches and cream either.

I read this from Brian today:

"J.T. Floyd is officially out for the year...Hooray."

I understand the point is that he wasn't playing well, but celebrating an injury to a Michigan player?  Not cool.
