Meta: If you could change 1 thing about MGoBlog, what would it be?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
I'm probably hoping in vain, but I mean for this to be a helpful suggestion box to be taken or discarded, not a complaint box. Ways to make the site even better, and how. Which means not - "no more soccer posts"; but could mean "separate tabs for OT content". (Which I don't particularly like, because I like 'em all, and don't want to sort through separate tabs for it; but I saw it suggested). Me? Not being that computer savvy, I don't know if it could be done, but if there was a way the site could save "new posts" labels over more than one page, it would save a lot of searching. Because invariably there's one post on the first page, and then a bunch of new ones on the later page, but the labels are gone once you're in the thread. (And yes, I know I could set the default for show all posts...but on the mobile it loads the longer ones slow enough as it is...a 200 post thread could take longer to load than the life of the device).

I agree.

Also, bonus tip: if you're using a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can click the wheel when you're hovering over a link and it opens it in a new tab. I just learned of this shortcut a couple months ago and it has revolutionized my browsing experience...

would have to submit information the first of each month.

YES...YES...that would make me happy.

Correct or not...he is quite entertaining.

can it be wired right into my brain so i can access it without one of these damn computers?

if not, how about embedded video player capability?

Considering that this is a website that often drools over the measurements (height, weight, fake 40 times, etc.) and shirtless photos of teenage boys, worrying about the age of those girls is probably the least of our problems.

More use of the Banhammer. I like the content, but the noise gets overwhelming sometimes.

I'm pretty sure non-troll guys that would contribute do not, since for whatever reason some posts get jumped on by a small mob.  I'm not criticizing that necessarily--debate is good, I just wish that there would be even more debate and discussion. There is a consensus on most issues here that could do with more discussion IMO.

I've been lurking a long time, and there are a lot more, Look-at-me-I-have-an-opinion type posts.  I think in finance they call it noise trading, and you really have to distill out the quality posts now in a way that wasn't necessary in the past.  That, and the increased posting moves the good board topics off the front page, which leads to double posts and the predictable complaints.  And yes, I realize the irony between my being a new-ish poster and the substance of this post.  Oh well.

Nevertheless, I think more eyes means more money for our benevolent leader, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

/ old-man rant.

Most of my problems comes from user error more than anything else. Labelling categories right is a big pet peeve. Pro sports are other unless you can specifically tie it to Michigan/Michigan alumni. That means random Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, other pro team that has no value to Michigan, to be listed at "other".

The baseball tag one is the only one I'm truly worried about, as I link that one out in the college baseball blog-o-sphere.

two tabs in particular:

1)  State of Michigan sports (Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, Pistons.)

2)  All other non-UM, non-State of Michigan Sports (Bulls, LeBron, World Cup, MLB, NFL, NBA.)

These are the two most frequest OT categories, and to the degree this is a sports website, I think they would keep MGoBoard from getting so cluttered. If they were segregated/ghetto-ized elsewhere then the main list of posts, you would be able to see relevant posts quickly and easily.

Or just make a new tab/division of the Mgoboard for off topic.  Make it like the difference between Diaries and the Mgoboard right now.  Anybody that posts something in the Mgoboard that is stupidly off topic gets some instant justic applied.

I don't hate on all, or even most of the OT threads, but they push meaningful Michigan related content off the first couple of pages of the Mgoboard within 48 hours.  if people want to talk about OT stuff just give them their own board.

I sometimes post in off-topic threads in areas I have some expertise or interest, but ignore all the others. I pretty much read all Michigan-related threads. It sucks when there are 19 off-topic threads pushing the Michigan content down and out.

An OT forum would be great, though there should be an easy-to-find, clear, and evolving delineation of the rules for what is on-topic. Everything else is off-topic, but still no politics.

Some of the reader comments/content involves considerable effort or insight to produce.  Such efforts make this site worthwhile reading. However, we can only +1 those contributors while we +1 guys who post pictures of hot chicks kissing .  .  .  Nevermind, WTF am I thinking!

It hasn't been too bad lately, but it's ridiculous when something gets posted 3-4 times, especially when the same topic is on the front page. People also mess up the OT on thread titles. I wouldn't change anything Brian was doing, just some of the things posters do.

It would be cool to have a member of the coaching staff give regular inputs on things like recruiting, scouting, post game analysis, etc.  Until then, Magnus does a pretty good job.
