Meta: How does the advertisement generator work?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So I am curious how the ad generators work. I love the Moe Sport Shops ads. And I get how there are links to things I have searched . . . I just ordered a Nikon camera lens, so I get that I will have ads from Adorama (the store in NYC where I ordered the lens).

However, there are enough annoying ads that come up which I have absolutely no interest in. I have absolutely no interest in dating Arab women, Ukrainian women, Russian women, Asian women, etc., etc. I've never signed up for a dating site, I've never gone to a dating site, I may be just as curious, as the next person, but I'm never sharing any CC or ID info with any dating website. Never even thought of it. Won't do it. I just don't get it.

And I'm sure the Mad Hatter and a host of other posters will make snarky comments, but trust me, there's no way this should be in my profile in the least.

At least I've never seen the annoying "shocking" pictures or the like at mgoblog. There's that going for the site.

Changing topics, we still haven't heard a peep about when there will be mgoblog changes. Upgrades to the server, to the board, accurate links, site design. Was there something up about this while I was on vacation over the kid's Spring Break?

Yes. When you load Mgoblog, your browser makes a request and then receives MgoBlog's HTML. There are then portions of the page that make requests to GoogleAds and then return the ad. AdBlock recognizes when your browser is going to make a request towards an ad site and then blocks the request. Google pays based on how many requests they get to their ad servers from your website.

So yeah, if you want to support a website you should turn off adblock for their pages (you can do this for individual sites. Mgoblog is one of the few sites I have adblock off for).

I don't mind if people adblock us so long as they go to Beveled Guilt once a year and maybe buy a shirt and the book. Been thinking about offering an ad-/guilt-free option to anyone who wants to pay $100 a year or something for a shirt, HTTV, and a free drink at a bar night, something like that.

but would say that the most effective way some of my favorite charities/businesses can raise money from me is with what you suggest, 'donate $X today, and we'll send you a free set of the ginsu knives and the joe frazier cooking thing!'  i highly recommend you try that as i for one would be prompted into action.  maybe 'pick a t-shir and a mug' combo, along iwth 'buy the book and get a hat' combo, stuff like that.

and as always, thanks for your blog.  i don't social media and i don't visit other blogs -this is an exceptional place you run.

It's a fair question, but I'm going to guess that the things you are interested in (cameras, sports, perhaps classic rock, cars, whatever) put you in a demographic that suggests "near or at middle aged, sufficient means, etc." that makes you a target demographic.  I get some of the same pervy "Date [insert mail-order country] Women" ads, along with ads for items that I have either purchased or researched.

I recall a few years back having a close relative who had Alzheimer's and doing some research on the topic since I knew jack-all about the topic.  Soon enough I was getting ads assuming I was much older than I am.

So I think it's just a "shotgun" algorithm that puts the known parts of your profile as being a pretty good fit with those unknown characteristics.  I would not fret too much about this.

Pro-tip, though - One time I was on a project with some colleagues that was an utter waste of time, and I thought it would be funny to Google image search "Circle Jerk" for a cartoon.  Don't Google image search "Circle Jerk" if you are sensitive to these sorts of pop-up ads.

Like clockwork, this question appears periodically. Robots run the world. Google/Skynet overlords know you want that mail-order bride.

Twitter always shows me ads for Asiandate.com. I'm like please son, I got Asia wrapped around my finger. How about BrazilianSupermodelDate.com? That's more in the typical East Asian autocrat's wheelhouse.

I get the same ads for mail order brides and such, and I have seen others comment that they get them inexplicably as well. I can't even guess how that works because I don't see the ads at any other site.

MgoBlog sells ad space to Moe's directly.

The rest are a kind of a "clearinghouse" that targets you based on user behavior. I'm not sure how you get targeted for the mail-order-bride thing, but it's like just based on some part of the demographic you represent. Age, gender, income, relationship status. MgoBlog represents some kind of space that must have shown success selling to that service, otherwise you wouldn't see it (for what it's worth, I've never seen one of those ads here)

Don't knock Russian mail-order brides until you've tried one. If you're okay with the smell of vodka and her spending hours in the bakery aisle waiting for her turn to buy bread, then you will be very happy.
