META: Help Misopogon name his Tuesday Column

Submitted by Seth on

Usually I don't have such a hard time with this.

The Tuesday column needs  a name, and while there were some good suggestions in comments from last week, I'd like some more ideas from the board.

Here's one I've been kicking around, but I'm worried it's a bit obscure:

Summer Glaum: Decimation of Defense

Column name: good idea/bad idea?

sum·mer noun

1. the season between spring and autumn, in the Northern Hemisphere from the summer solstice to the autumnal equinox, and in the Southern Hemisphere from the winter solstice to the vernal equinox.

2. the period comprising the months of June, July, and August in the U.S., and from the middle of May to the middle of August in Great Britain.

3. a period of hot, usually sunny weather: We had no real summer last year.

4. the hotter half of the year ( opposed to winter): They spend the summers in New Hampshire and the winters in Florida.

5. the period of finest development, perfection, or beauty previous to any decline: the summer of life.

...plus

Glaum v. i. [Etymol. uncertain.] To grope with the hands, as in the dark. [Scot.]

To glaum at, to grasp or snatch at; to aspire to.

=

And because what I do with the column is almost exactly this:

Venting

Like? Dislike? You're the folks this is written for, so if that won't make you chuckle every time you see it, please suggest something else.

How about "The Windbag".  As in - a long winded take at something that could probably be simplified.  I would probably read it if you called it The Windbag.

I think I saw someone suggest, Misopogon's Musings. I like it. Or Miso's Musings unless I've offended you by shortening your name.  If that's the case it was my wife's idea.  She just can't ever figure out how to say your name.

"I'm reading that guy's diary thing, what's his name?" - Wife

Tuesdays with Misopogon.  You could get sued by Albom, which would be great exposure for the blog.

Three Days Later.  As in three days since UM destroyed their competition on the field.  Or other stuff.

Leaders and Best.  Simply titled to feature your 'best of this week's blog' feature.

Misopontifications.  Kind of a stretch.  That is one crazy name to work with, right there.

How about Tuesday's with MOARRIE... a good play on words plus it's self descriptive.

This will allow you to write about events in very detailed fashion without actually having to be at said event - just like a certain local "columnist".

Some of the other suggestions here are good too, like "Lucretian Lines from a Discursive Mind." I'm all for references to Lucretius, didactic epic poetry is awesome.

I had no idea that Misopogon meant "Beard-Hater." I guess i just always remembered when that some previous poster noted that Misopogon sounds like something a Jamaican person would say upon entering the shower and noticing their soap was missing ...

As such, I'd advocate for "Tuesday's Empty Soapbox" ... you know, because apparently one of your Jamaican roommates stole your soap

But considering the source/ID-

"The Emperor Has No Clothes"

"Musing Upon Ancient Antioch" (or "Essays of Antioch" for shorter name)

"Antiochepedia"

"Beards for Michigan"

But then, I never think of that when I see it, I usually think of this-

Don't use "Summer Glaum".  If you have to ask in the first place, you're already thinking it might suck.

Preferred from above:

"Somebody's Wrong on the Internet"

"Three Days Later"

My take:

Summer Glaum - not so much, not really one of my favorite xkcd jokes although it's alright.

There were some great suggestions above. I'd be cool with Somebody's Wrong on the Internet, Tuesdays with MOARy (or MOARRIE, whatevs), or The Windbag. Three Days Later is a great suggestion for a weekly post, but it just lacks the humor I associate with your writing; it would be a good name for an analysis piece.

I also like my own suggestion, Verbal Misopogonorreah

I swear, I really enjoy reading your stuff; just a big fan of self-deprecation when it comes to naming things.
