Meta: Has no one seen Taken?

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So Brian's front page post on the B-School kid trying to "actualize" concepting song-like objects got a whole lots of posts calling it a threat on ruining careers. I'll explain the damn joke. There was a movie in 2009 called "Taken".  Liam Neeson delivers a speech then [SPOILER ALERT] kills bad guys who kidnapped his daughter (see, she was Taken). Brian's post was an OBVIOUS parody of this speech. My question is... how did you miss this?

Taken was such a big hit they made a sequel. Then a THIRD!

Family guy parodied it!

it was in a superbowl commercial two weeks ago! Lighten up folks.

I don't think Brian is going to be letting these things go anymore. The gauntlet will be thrown down immediately from now on. To those of you criticizing Brian for giving out the guy's Twitter how else would you recommend he fight this?

Of Brian, and felt that giving out the username of the student was very wrong.  It's simple really, if you have a problem with this, take it up with the CSG.  Here is their contact info:

So, Moe, I am really trying to understand your points. Let me try to understand.

  1. You believe that Brian was very wrong in sharing the names of Adam Weiss and of Weinberg? This is confusing, because the Michigan Daily named both of them. I guess that's where my major point of confusion is. Was the Daily wrong in publishing their names? When is it appropriate to publish names? When is it inappropriate?
  2. Adam Weiss (and for that matter, Weinberg) both have public websites. Weiss also has a linkedin account (don't know for Weinberg.) Weiss also had a twitter account. Weiss also had a facebook account. Inside of his accounts, he puts up multiple email addresses through which he can be reached. Was Weiss wrong? Should we not take these public accounts as license to contact him?
  3. When do you hold young adults accountable? How do you think Weiss should be held accountable?
  4. So what is Brian allowed to say? Who is he allowed to comment on?

Frankly, with the kind of nonsense that has come out of this, I could understand Brian wanting to have nothing to do with revealing himself at all, in any way, to anyone on this blog.

EDIT:  FTR, I have not contacted Weiss or Weinberg. I will never contact them. It would be a total waste of my time to contact them. And honestly, I'd literally bet a steak dinner Brian won't contact them either. The rule out there is, never contact a student if you are an adult, unless you have a prior relationship.

Would you write a sermon about one of your church members like this blog post if they had put forth a bad idea in a church board meeting? Then go  on twitter and tweet out their twitter handle with the hash tag excominicate Bob Joe parishoner? When you hold young adults accountable do you do it by holding therm up for ridicule and a mob to help ridicule after your done?

Their is a difference between calling someone out for a bad idea wich is fair game justr like Ace did and being a jerk Brian is being a jerk in this. Brian of bringing down Dave Brandon fame is "joking " about ruining peoples careers if they support a idea he doesn't like. This is the behavior of someone who has announced their intention to run for regent of the univeristy. Do you really think this blog post is how someone who wants to help run the university should respond to its students?

Who knows if anyone on CSG even know mgoblog exists. Certainly this b-school kid wasn't a regular reader. Contacting CSG personally does very little. Maybe they know who Brian is, maybe they don't. Brian is just flexing his muscles here. I am sure he is feeling quite invigorated after the Fall of Brandon.

it seems fairly certain that members of the CSG would be familiar with this blog. If not one has to ask if they are remotely aware enough of campus life to represent the students.

This is only my opinion for course, but given that Brandon approached the CSG to assist him to increase student involvement, I would expect that every member would at least spend the time to get a basic understanding of the drivers surrounding the issue. It seems highly unlikely that they would not be exposed to the blogs existence.

If these guys had written a new song and using their own resources arranged to publicize it to see if it became popular, I'd have no problem with their efforts.  Personally I think it's an amazingly stupid idea, but they are welcome to waste their time and resources as they choose, or not depending on the outcome.

That is not what happened here. They tried to leverage Weiss's position on the CSG to use university resources to pay to implement a vaguely stated concept and push through its adoption. At that point they opened themselves up to a public response, which could take various forms.

Many people here loved the demonstrations against Brandon for what they perceived as stupid and harmful abuse of his position. Very few people suggested that Brandons opposition work through channels to get their concerns addressed. Similar, if much lesser, abuse of position occured here, with similar, if much lesser, consequences.

If nothing else, it seems likely that all the members of the CSG will consider public reaction to their notions of how to use university resources. If so then they have all learned a valuable lesson.

I don't think I've ever posted before. I read the site and I love all the content. However, this topic really got to me.

Just imagine if the kid was your son or little brother or you yourself. How would you feel seeing that post? I've said things about people that I regret, but I try to think about how someone else will feel before saying something potentially hurtful. I mean, people are just trying to live their lives.

Brian's post was undeniably hurtful to the kid and his family.
