Meta: Has no one seen Taken?

Submitted by JeepinBen on

So Brian's front page post on the B-School kid trying to "actualize" concepting song-like objects got a whole lots of posts calling it a threat on ruining careers. I'll explain the damn joke. There was a movie in 2009 called "Taken".  Liam Neeson delivers a speech then [SPOILER ALERT] kills bad guys who kidnapped his daughter (see, she was Taken). Brian's post was an OBVIOUS parody of this speech. My question is... how did you miss this?

Taken was such a big hit they made a sequel. Then a THIRD!

Family guy parodied it!

it was in a superbowl commercial two weeks ago! Lighten up folks.

It's the Daily's fault for cyberbullying this student government representative by publishing a story about a proposal he made at a student government meeting in his capacity as a representative of the Michigan student body?  The Daily blew his cover as a secret member of an underground organization?

Saying this guy merely "presented an idea to student government" is a mischaracterization of epic proportions.

The guys comments about the nature of it - "conceptualizing the project," "extremely unique" (trying to portray it as this grandiose enterprise) plus him wanting to seek out connections with famous people.... If you don't think this guy is seeking the limelight you are either being willfully ignorant or you're immensely naive.

Being a complete dick and clarifying it with a joke, is like saying, "No offense but, You're so annoying, I want to torture you until you give up begging me to murder you and start to enjoy it".

The reference was good, not great but overall it seemed like a front page rant editorial done while drinking whisky(or spirit of choice).

I know the majority and Brian hate RaWk and piped in.  Now a composed song the band could play, with recent references would be neat for a few years.  Idea isn't awful but as expected a 19 yo kid who is full of themself thinks their ideas are golden and haven't a clue about what is actually good versus sounds neat to them, they hung over bro.

If you couldn't tell that Brian was just having fun while making a point, I have to roll my eyes in wonder.

Or maybe you have been watching too many chick flicks.

People get themselves bent out of shape way too easily over things that don't matter.

Go visit the Daily and see what people are saying about this ludicrous idea.....it isn't pretty.

Been in meetings all day and I come back to THIS?

Somebody correct if I'm wrong but this is what it looks like to the guy coming real late to the party:

1. Some jackoff Sophmore with more money than brains get the bright idea to write a song to accompany The Victors.

2. For reasons unknown other stupid students think this is a good idea

3. Brian most definitely does NOT think this is a good idea and takes jackoff soph with more money than brains to task

4. A whole bunch of concern trolls get concerned over Brian's post

5. Board divides with most saying jackoff had what's coming to him (welcome to real world) and others worried over how this brutal attack might hurt bad idea sophomore's feelings

Did I miss anything?  Over 400 freaking posts on this breaking news (all three threads) and counting.

Well, you are missing:

1)  Stupid ideas and stupid photos on twitter do not make college sophomores "jackoffs".

2)  The kid has already had to take down his twitter feed.

If Devin Funchess caught this sort of treatment for his "Wins are just a statistic" statement, Brian would have a hissy fit.

Also add King of Hypocrits. He surely doesn't mind making movies where he uses a gun and inflicting violence while getting paid millions of dollars (Taken resurrected his acting career) while turning around espousing anti gun beliefs (which is fine) in real life. But that's hollywood for you.

Well fuck me, here I always thought making jokes at another's expense, especially of a threatening nature from a position of power were a common bullying tactic.

I hope if your kid ever comes home from school and tells you a kid in a higher grade was making fun of him/her, you inform him that the kid wasn't a bully, he was just joking.

When you were a kid, and older kids made fun of you (because it happened to all of us), did you go home & tell your parents?  Bust their balls back?  Punch the kid square in the face?  Would your life today be any different based on which route you took?

1. It was a parody and mockery of a bad idea.

2. That bad idea was made public.

3. No one reasonably could think that Brian was going to act on any "threat".

4. Really? No one can make jokes at another's expense anymore? It's now all bullying? You want to start a movement to put most comedians and many writers out of work?

5. We aren't talking about kids, we're talking about a 19 year old college sophomore.

Umm, except he did act on his threat.  He warned CSG members that if they voted in favor of this terrible idea he would find their social profiles and kill their search results.  And as an example, he did that very thing to Adam Weiss, the progenitor of the terrible idea.

Honestly, go search for him. This story for traction at a lot of places, mostly from the daily article. Some reference Brian among MANY people who take issue with it. And him zapping his Twitter account after everyone started telling him it was a dumb idea isn't some concentrated bullying. Do I think there were a bit less aggressive ways to take him on? Sure. But Brian taking a strong stance against something and pointing out the guy involved ( like other people were doing) isn't some terrible crime.

You are painting with way too broad a brush.  If I, and I suspect most of us who frequent MGoblog thought Brian were truly being a cyberbully, the backlash around here would be a couple of orders of magnitude greater than the noise that erupted earlier.

From my perspective, nobody was hurt.  Young Mr. Weiss may have learned a valuable lesson about how to approach things in the future. He might acquire enough insight to realize that it might be wise to do a bit more homework before launching a potentially highly polarizing project that will be met with disdain, or at the very least, considerable skepticism, by a large segment of the fanbase.

If my 19 year old comes home from college with his feelings hurt because he wanted to replace/supplement/uniquely uniquinize the Victors I'll tell him that he had a dumb idea and people reacted to it.

If my 4 year old gets pushed on the playground or harrassed by a 90 lb 5th grader, I'll have a different reaction.

There are degrees in life, it's not all black or white. This is a 19 year old with a business proposal and a persona that he has put in the public sphere - twitter, facebook and linkedin can all be made private! This is not a small child in a purported safe space like a school.

If you Adam Weiss was your son and your reaction to Brian's post would be to tell him that is just people reacting to his dumb idea, I'd say you are a shit parent.

As it is, you are probably just full of shit.

I like this blogs general opinion that blowing up a high school senior's twitter over a college choice makes one a scumbag, but directing a large readership towards a college sophomore's twitter is fair game.

Good to know that you think 19 year olds can never be criticized. I'd love to know what happens to a kid who gets an A- or doesnt get a trophy in your world.

If my future (to this point non existent) children put something on the internet  and take flack for it I'll have failed in not preparing them that the internet is a public domain. I put pictures of myself on facebook while in college that were fine when facebook was college kids only. I took them down once I started looking for jobs, seeing as how facebook expanded. The internet is public and forever. Consequences are a result of actions. How did this person expect to be received?

There's something to be learned from mistakes. If a child gets nothing but 100% positive feedback their entire life they will not be a functioning adult. Learning to deal with failure is an important skill. It is important to lose. To fail. to be sent back to the drawing board. I've had lots of dumb ideas. I don't make them public comments to a public body on a public space that is the internet.

Oh, give me a break.  Weiss is certainly already being criticized, and painfully mocked, within his community at the University of Michigan.  I'm sure he was already in a world of shit before Brian joined the fray.

Saying that a website with a national platform shouldn't exponentially compound a young man's humiliation is not remotely the same thing as saying that 19 year olds can never be criticized.
