meta: Free Press threads are banned.

Submitted by Brian on

From now on, any random threads about the Free Press or the people who work there will be deleted. Legitimate threads citing Free Press articles that talk about Michigan sports will stand, and they will probably draw some hur hur posts; that's life.

Threads about the Free Press itself will be deleted unless there is a major development worthy of attention.

The reason for this change is that those threads are embarrassing wastes of space and they make me want to die.

I think this has been a long time coming.  I've gotten so sick of all the Freep-hating nonsense on the board.  I think their coverage of UM has been unfair, just like everyone else, but this has become a prime example of beating a dead horse.

... ignoring dead-tree "journalism" is the best revenge.

The lame, run-on cheap shots were engendering sympathy, which is not a good thing.

Is Brett Favre going to join the [PAPER REDACTED] in board purgatory any time soon?

I am presupposing that a thread whose content can be boiled down to, "Rosenberg punches dolphins," will be taken down.  I'm perfectly okay with that.

And at the same time, I presume, a thread that seriously and carefully Fisks a story from the front page of the paper will not be taken down.  And that in fact it will be welcomed as "On Topic" content.

Yes?

Because we all expect that there will be threads noting legitimate complaints about various comments or content on BTN, or ESPN, or ABC, or in one of a thousand publications, from the Columbus Dispatch to the New York Times.  Is the Free Press specially off-limits?  Is it because the Free Press has shown itself to be so far beyond the pale?

If you want to post something long and devoid of ad-hominems in response to a Free Press article that requires a response of some variety that will stand. Something like "Freep FOIAs reprimand letters for no useful reason" will get lifted because it's not relevant to the program's future and it's something we all already know: the Free Press is a laughable heap of crap.

I know this is a bit hypocritical since I just ad-hominemed the Free Press today but I can regulate the frequency of that (very rarely) but not the board (every damn day).

Freep bashing is sooo 2009.

Thank you for droping a brick of sanity in the seemingly endless sea of ridiculousness this board has devolved into over the FREEP fiasco.

I'll always enjoy watching the current Freep sports staff get bashed (particularly by Section 1, whose posts -- sorry -- I honestly enjoy), but I can see how the 'blog's owner may be tired of it happening here.  Perfectly understandable.

Related, somewhat: Is it just me or have there been way too many lightweight/duplicate/both posts on MGoBoard over the past month?  Could those be deleted, too?  I can see where setting boundaries would be difficult, but the problem seems to be getting worse.

but I actually would consider Section 1's post to be of the legitimate variety.

I think this was in response to the post that was deleted that was wondering about Rosenberg's presence in one of the media day videos.

Waiting on the requested clarification before I assume his posts are banned.

EDIT: clarification received and apparently fisking will be no more, thus it shall be. Not wanting to be hypocritical after supporting other authoritarian measures on the site from fearless leader.....shutting up now.

Too much of your time & that of other mods has been given to policing juvenile behavior on the board. Again, many of your readers, who don't feel the need to comment on every last thread and post, get tired of badly written material. Among other things, I don't like to read:

1)  Stuff ripping on players (Tate, Austin White, BouBou, Turner, and others);

2)  Stuff ripping on recruits;

3)  Stuff ripping the FREEP, or other MSM;

4)  Stuff ripping on RR, & Carr, & MS Coleman, & Brand;

5)  Endless meaningless polls (favorite this, least favorite that, etc.) A few of the polls are ok, I guess.

6)  Stuff that just is variations on various four letter words and scatological references.

You almost need an ombudsman or PR person or hall monitor to delete posts or get after those who waste our time with this stuff. As the mtl has degenerated in quality, I find myself reading less and less. Thanks for all efforts to remove, edit, or lessen the junk.

This deserves a re-post, a +1, and an "I like the things you say."

embodies so much of what people hate about out-of-control Message Boards -- personal attacks, content-free one-liners, low-humor vid-clips, etc.
