Meta: Embedding for idiots, please?

Submitted by BornInA2 on

It's off-season and all, and pending a much-hoped-for upgrade to this web site full of great content but powered by anemic hamsters that speak only Latin, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to post a short primer on how to embed jpegs, gifs, and youtube videos in posts for us unwashed masses who haven't figured it out.

Pretty please?

The easiest way to post gifs it to:

1) Open gif in new window

2) Have both windows (mgoblog and gif) open side-by-side

3)Drag and drop gif into post or comment

Note: The gif needs to be on a file sharing site like imgur, or elsewhere on the internet. You can't share it straight from a personal folder on your computer.

I don't find that the easiest way. I just right click a gif, select "copy image location," and then use the site tool to post a a link by pasting the link in the "URL" field.

Image result for i can help with that gif

Click and drag GIFs and memes or pics is easiest. Youtube you click on the share icon and copy the old embed code. Click on switch to plain text editor above the save and preview buttons on Mgoblog and paste. Click switch to rich text editor. You'll see IFrame or some shit. That means it's good to go. Hit save.

Okay, so I am really not an idiot, but here's what happens for me:

Use the image tool: I paste the URL but when I go to click the "Okay" box it turns orange and nothing happens when I click it. Same thing with the link tool.

Drag and drop image: When I drop the image into the rich editor, instead of embedding I am redirected to the URL of the image and leave this site entirely.

Win7 64 bit, IE 11. Nothing unusual aside from the MVPS HOSTS file.

Also, in the rich editor, copy/paste do not work. Whatever javascript monkey business is going on does not connect with the clipboard on my laptop; paste is always grayed out.

For images, because I have this fear of drag-and-drop not taking proper scaling into consideration, I go to this handy page with the appropriate HTML tags that you can customize - LINK

One thing about this though is that you sort of need to be conscious about the image size - the reply box for MGoBlog should handle anything up to about 400 pixels in width without an issue, but if it is larger than that, I'll use the tag with the height and width inputs to scale it. Basically, 400/actual width and then that fraction times the height for the scaled height.

Paste the appropriate tag into your reply while in Plain Text Mode (see selections below the reply box) and then paste image link (you may need to open it in a separate tab) into "image.jpg" and then just change the numbers as needed.

Definitely not the easiet method, but useful for larger images or ones that are from sites that aren't necessarily file sharing sites.

For the iPhone HD app, click the camera button to the left of the text box. Copy and paste the url (for jpgs, gifs, YouTube videos, etc.) and then hit the blue check mark to the right of the text box. You can also include text as you normally would and it will post along with whatever's embedded.

I accidentally stumbled across this a month ago and it has been life-altering.

Gif tip:  You can google image search for gifs just like pictures.  Just search for something like "harbaugh gif" then click "view image" to get the .gif.

For both gifs and images, I just click the image button (furthest one to the right when making a new post) and paste the url (you have to isolate the image/gif in a new tab first).
