META: Embed Refresher Course

Submitted by Noleverine on

So, it seems like almost every thread with a video also includes a request for help embedding. There have been a couple of threads on it (including a very nice tutorial from a few years back, though it is before youtube changed their embedding), but for those who don't want to know or may have forgotten, here is a very quick and dirty refresher course on how to embed.

1.) Find the video on youtube. I just picked a random hype video (HT: bassmaster)

2.) Directly under the video, click "share." This will bring up a URL.

3.) Next to the URL, click "Embed." This will bring up a page with some funky looking stuff (embed code):

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GdByr2Uce-Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

4.) Under the embed code, there are other options with checkboxes next to them. Click the checkbox that says "Use old embed code."  This will bring up a different embed code that is longer:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GdByr2Uce-Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GdByr2Uce-Q?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

You can also choose to start from a certain point in the video, such as 30 seconds in if you select that box.

5.) Copy the "old embed code." If you do not use "old embed code," it will not work. (EDIT: Per justingoblue you can use the new embed code in comments, but not in an OP. Thanks for the correction)

6.) Switch to plain text editor in MGoBlog in the comment box/OP where you would like to embed the video.

7.) Paste the embed code into the plain text editor.

8.) When you switch back to Rich Text Editor and there is a box with "FLASH" in the middle in red lettering, you did it right. The video will be there when you save your OP/comment. If it says "IFRAME" you did something wrong. Go back and repeat steps 1-7.

9.) If you do it correctly, it will embed, like so:

Hopefully this will help some of the new users learn to embed. I, or someone smarter than I, can answer any questions you might have in the comments.

New embed codes do work for posting, just not when starting a thread.

Also, this seems like a good place for a blockquote reminder.

  1. Switch to plain text editor.
  2. Write <blockquote> </blockquote>
  3. Paste quote between commands.
  4. Switch back to rich text editor.
  5. ?
  6. Profit.

Can you further explain how to use the old embed code and to start the video at a certain place. I know there is something under the options tab, but that doesn't change the embed code. Much appreciated

Old Embed Code

<object width=”420″ height=”315″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/xo79vPW3lkE?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&start=625“></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/xo79vPW3lkE?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&start=625” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”420″ height=”315″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

where 625 = (10x60) + 25 = 10 minutes 25 seconds

I knew I had seen posts with a video, but I tried everything except using the old code. Should have guessed, old stuff always works.

That this will soon turn into an embed party consisting of 30% WolverineHistorian clips, 30% Denard Being Awesome clips, and 40% Kate Upton. BKFinest it.

I am not sure if it will work on this site, but in most other places, if you really wanted to get the attention of people clicking on a thread, you could also add things such as "autostart="true" or "playcount="100" to the code.

NOTE: As much as I should, I have not autostarted this clip below with Carter-to-Wangler and then Bo talking about it.

I've tried to start at a spot and stop somewhere else and then loop.  Has anyone done this?  It doesn't appear possible when I look for tips.

It would really help when people are talking about technique or a specific analysis.

I'm also curious how you do the pop up box video like Brian has done in past UFRs.  Though I have never really viewed the source to see the code.

This is impossible. I had a great photo of Trey Burke I wanted to post, but I couldn't because this weird comment-posting interface is developed for computer programmers. There are nine steps to post an embed. Why can't I just post a link and have it work? Same with videos. Us old folks don't know about these techy instructions.

Apparently the embedding will work if the red letters in the box say "IFRAME." Just embedded my first vid and that's what showed up. Spent a few minutes trying to get it to say "Flash," failed, clicked save, video works.
