Meta: Do we need 2nd half open threads? UNITE

Submitted by buddhafrog on

The last few weeks (at least), when the 2nd half open thread goes up, there are some folks on the (first) open thread that bitch about the need of an additional game thread.  And then it takes some time for a majority of folks to switch on over, with some posters never making the jump.  Essentially it just divides the board.

I remember the first 2nd half game thread going up - the logic was that the original game thread was already some # of posts long and becoming unmanageable.  What?  Is this something that effects mobile device users?  Because for me (PC), the number of posts on the thread doesn't make it more or less manageable.

I made this post to bring discussion and hopefully more unanimous actions by the board.  I I don't care too much either way, but I do care that more posters are posting together - it imporves the quality of the thread (and by that, I mean the number of people who lose their mind and whine about the same thing).

  1. Don't post a 2nd half open thread - only one thread for the game needed
  2. Post the 2nd half open thread and make the jump on over.

Any chance that we come to some sort of clear majority on this critical debate and save this football season?

EDIT: some folks are angry I posted this during the game.  It was my "5 minute break from the game so that I don't lose my mind."  (actually I just put the game on a smaller window on my computer).  I didn't really expect y'all to discuss this during the game.

Especially with dramatic / big games, two threads is really a good way to keep things managable. I would have to agree with my colleague above. Part of it is that a fair number of people do get tired of trying to follow an 800 or 900 post thread for one game.

Dude, I don't care about thread etiquette, I don't even care about the rest of the season. I'm so sick right now. Not because the team I like loses football games, but because the kids are playing their hearts out and the coaches are blowing it for them. I'm so mad about Lewan coming back this year. It's infuriating that the coaches are capable of putting these kids in a position to succeed, and they're getting rich being paid to do it, yet they stubbornly make it even harder for them to. They're actually getting paid making it worse. I can't watch that. It's painful , and sad for the players
