Meta: Brian for a day

Submitted by ClearEyesFullHart on

I suppose with the veritable cornucopia of worthy topics on the mgoboard this offseason I feel like starting my own RCMB-worthy post.  I considered a ""hot or not" thread, or perhaps a "bump when you just smacked your b girlfriend" thread, but then inspiration struck:

With all the "for a day" front page posts, why not throw it out there.  What would you change if YOU ran mgoblog?

Personally, I'd get rid of that CEFH douche.  Lot of paint chips consumed in that one's childhood to be sure.  Then I would bring back a merit based point system.

Ah yes, I suppose I did have a point.  It is my contention that bringing the old "One Man, One Vote, Two Points" system back would return many utils of fun/entertainment to the blog, as well as some level of accountability.

Sad as it may be,  back in the day having one of your comments/posts/diaries pos bombed was kind of a little thrill.  Positive reinforcement if you will.  Made you want to be a better poster.

Now seeing these poor impotent posbang threads just seems sad.  Just watching these poor dejected bastards going through the motions out of sheer nostalgia...It makes a man yearn for days gone by.

Back in the day, a worthless post like this one could have been negged to oblivian.

There were consequences for a man's actions.  Fortunes were won and lost at the turn of a phrase.  It was an exciting time.

This subject has been broached here

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/otmeta-bring-back-negbangposbang

and here

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/meta-bring-back-true-posbangs-and-negbangs

and here

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/meta-bring-back-negbang

but a review of the literature doesn't reveal much.  Was there a reason merit-based points went away?  Does anyone really like the new system?

I threw together a little poll just for kicks, you can throw in your opinion if you've got time.  Dont expect it will change anything, but I dont know...Am I the only one who misses the way of the posbang?

Which do you prefer?

Enough of my tired ideas though...What would you guys change?

Where users could privately chat with each other would be cool. If not a live chat, then maybe a private message box. I'm not sure how feasible it would be, but it would be cool. If there was an easy way to see how many times a user has posted, created a diary, and created a thread, that would be nice. If you could see the average score of a user's posts, it could give some indication of how respected a user is. Honestly, nothing on this site is that bad. I like the layout and utility of this site much better than Rivals or ESPN.

Private chat would be kind of cool. As to average score and how many posts, I'm not sure what happened in the past on this board, but right now, as OMG Shirtless! keeps pointing out, pos and neg votes are meaningless: you earn one point per post, so it's quite easy to tell how many posts someone has made (but not threads or diaries created).  Also, the point karma, which is available to see for everyone by clicking on the user name does give some indication of the average score of a user's posts.

Like you, though, I've never seen a better sports board.

One feature I would like to see again that was here when I first started is a way to search by month or date.

I understand where you are coming from, wanting to show who is more active than who by using a 1 point per post but im thinking it would be possible to have an "MGoPoints" line where pos and neg bangs affect and a "Posts" line where it just shows the number of posts made like it is currently.

I wrote a paper for my eCommunities class that addressed different design issues for online communities.  I, of course, chose MGoBlog.  Two of my more important suggestions were private messaging and content sharing.  The PMing has been addressed so I'll expand on the latter.  I think implementing a simple Facebook/Twitter/Myspace link in the header of front page posts could certainly be beneficial and worthwhile.  Other than copy/pasting the URL, is this already possible?

Here's the uninspiring mockup I used in my paper:

I haven't had my coffee yet and can't figure it out.

While I don't care about the amassing of points, the current system of comment moderation is stupid. It's much better if it's just a straightforward thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Bolivia is a cool place and more people need to take a vacation there.

I had the same question about CEFH until I noticed the OP's name.
The point system doesn't really bother me, but one limitation is that with "Normal" being the default moderation label and so many people clicking it, you rarely see an up-voted comment labeled as anything other than Normal (once it gets to 2+ up-votes).

Make the blog primarily video-based, featuring extensive Youtube-worthy rants from Brian, dressed up like Jenna Marbles, in his basement. That, and a cool MIDI of The Victors playing nonstop. And the front banner would consist of many small, knicknack-type .gifs (e.g, spinning block-M's, dancing Denard icons, Hoke pointing, etc.)

I would create a daily feature called "Brendan Gibbons' Brunette of the Day".

They call that "Touch the Banner."  ;-)

CMR's daily feature called "Creepy Old Creepers." It will highlight the new lows in internet and real-life creepiness perpetrated by both cougars and dirty old men alike. First article: "Put Out the Red Light Already, Roxanne: Knowing When to Quit Having Crushes on High School and College Students." /as funny as that would be to write, that was indeed heavy sarcasm

...and come to realize that maybe just maybe this guy is not only the best recruiter college hoops has ever seen (4 straight #1 classes) but also a top 5 bench coach...easy to dislike, perhaps...easy to dismiss?  No chance.

If I were Brian for a day; I would consider the current system pure genius.

Commence throwing rotten tomatoes at your monitors.

Brandon Minor on the banner.  It's historical, reminds me how far we have come from the days of doom, and I think the aesthetics are the best.

I want the recruiting board back! The blue crowned faces and the grey dead faces. I think it was a great guesstimation of where we stood with a player, and to hell with anybody who doesn't like that word.

That's right, and none of that neopolitan crap, those people just need to make a damn decision. ...but back to the recruiting board, any of those high school players that had a frowny face were dead to me.

I had a post that was +104. It was the highlight of my Internet career. I'd like the chance to best that mark again, please.

Is there any way that on multi page threads, when opening one page, the "new" tags don't get blown away for the other pages?

Please fix the page number links to get to older pages of the board
