META: Board/Site Policy on Internet Streams

Submitted by grand river fi… on

With the season just around the corner, and a proliferation of "Where can I watch the game in __________" threads poping up I was wondering what the policy is for posting links to streams on the site.  Also a general survey if a board post dedicated to links to streams of the games would be useful/appropriate/allowed.  What do you all think?

I think it's wrong for people to post sites where they can gain access to content that others have lawfully and legally paid for.  And  think it should be stopped immediately and anyone who does such a reprehensible act should be summarily barred from all further contact to and from ths site.

Your honor.

I'll link a bunch when the game's on if people need em.

Honestly tho, just go to the local Michigan bar or TV people. It's the first game of the season.. You don't wanna stream it unless you're that guy over in Myanmar/Burma like in the other thread.

Don't go when OSU has a game on the same day.

Was all OSU fans and they wouldn't even turn on volume to the Michigan game.  :(

This was in Missouri, I was a bit shocked TBH.

Best part of house ownership?  Get to choose telecoms(more than in an apt anyway).

How completely heterosexual of you!  I'll think of you during my bath tonight! I love to draw a warm bath at the end of the day.  Some days I put down the sketch book and actually fill up my real tub. That said,  I like to use jojoba oil on my fur.  I'm thinking about selling it actually, but marketed as "joe-joe-ba-th" oil or maybe just jojobath oil.  I'm undecided.

If we really want to dive in issues of morality we could point out the painfully obvious that athletics themselves are huge distraction to the overall objective to a research university. We could also point out that "spectating" a sport is probably one of the worst ways to invest ones limited time on this earth. You know, if we really wanted to point out right from wrong.

I will be watching that game on Thursday and yes my cable provider has my money so I can access data. No, I will not let them double charge me for the same data.

Watching a sport is about more than the sport itself. It's about FEELINGS. It brings people together.  Think dads taking their kids to games and cheering together.  Obviously they could do community service together or something like that, but entertainment has a value as well to society and the university.  Feelings man.

I don't see a problem with spectating sports. I just think its absurd to get onto someone who pays their ISP for data delivery who then restricts the type of data you can receive. You figure out a way to access said data and yet you are at fault? No! I am paying for data delivery already.

I find equally obnoxious that a lawyer is making the claim given the fact that data companies have virtual monopolies which are protected by lawyers. If such monopolies didn't exist then all of us could pay fair market value for data delivery and have no issues paying a subscription fee to watch Michigan football.

Yet, who am I to sway people toward practical reasoning.

In short, you take a moral stand against such people then you need to realize that there are others who have a problem with your behavior.

Edit: The original op stated using sarcasm. I still want my post the reflect that cable/isp companies have virtual monopolies and create additional hoops that should not exist to viewing a game.

That is the reason that many people stream instead of torrenting these days.  When people got into legal trouble for torrenting it was for the upload portion, not the download part.  I'm sure you aren't completely covered legally, but it's the copyright law against distribution they used to go after people.

I was a member of a few other sites and the general policy was no live links. I think that would be a proper attitude on this board as well. A live link is traceable back to the site with the link and would almost be an endorsement. By making someone actually type the web address it removes mgoblog from the referrer role, I think. At least that is how it was explained to me.

I think it should be the provider company's problem.  They should produce a better product or come up with an innovative way to stop these streams from happening.  If I buy a product and want to share it with my friends whats the big deal?  If you think borrowing someone's Netflix password or streaming a video is morally wrong, then you shouldn't let someone borrow your car, or have part of your twix, or come over to watch the game, or give a friend a book you already read.  Provider's are just pissy that technology is making their product less profitable and less exclusive.

It's kinda general knowledge that if you need to find a stream...there are ways to do so.  I'm not sure a board post is necessary for each game; firstrowsports and that ilk aren't going anywhere, and sites that deviate from this general level of "quality" are just inviting you to a world of pop-ups, viruses, and animated gifs of body parts doing things you didn't know were possible.

Typically, the usual links will show up in the open threads, and if we can organize some manner of live chat with a facility like Blyve for posting that information, it will be there too. Actually, in the live blogs, they were posted as a rule so that the question would be instantly answered for those curious. Some people have provided them as part of the introductory content to open threads, which is probably ideal too.

...if such posting of links were approved, I would probably post a link to www.stream2watch.com where I have had good luck finding high quality, stable streams of most games. Of course, if one were to hypothetically follow this link, I'd hope one would be equipped with a good ad-blocking browser extension.

As far as I can tell, there is no legal way to view the Michigan/Utah game in Canada.   If there was any hope that they would show it at a bar somewhere here in Toronto, I'd go out to watch the game, but the only games listed, including the Rogers Super Sports Package, are:

Florida International @ Central Florida

TCU @ Minnesota

Oklahoma State @ Central MIchigan

Duke @ Tulane

I hope Fox Sports One never broadcasts another University of Michigan game again!

I agree about the dead links, but if people want to watch streams from firstrowsports, etc. it's a better option. Kodi is probably the most addictive media platform of all time. My wife always has something to watch if she wants, which I couldn't say with cable. Between Amazon, Netflix and Hulu (free), I'm never lacking in content.
