Meta: Banner Contest

Submitted by bamill010 on

I was just wondering when we were going to see a new banner up? I liked a lot of the banners from the contest and I figured that there was going to be a new round of voting to compare the best from each group. If the mods are just too busy right now with the football season that's completely understandable.

I think the boner contest got the kibosh because of some sort of Cease & Desist from the University. Something about depictions of our favorite Maize and Blue student athletes being in violation of NCAA rules. Or something of the suches.

I had assumed that MGoBrian considered it more trouble than it was worth to continue.

The problem with the banner contest is that I was contacted by the U about using winged helmets and block Ms in any way and am not sure if they are right that it's not fair use like some local law-talking guys have suggested.

Every banner that made it to the final eight used at least one of those because it's, like, a Michigan blog. I was hoping to resolve that by meeting with that wing of the U, but they never responded to my request and so I'm just out here in limbo wondering WTF to do.

Isn't there some differentiation between using a winged helmet logo (which I'm assuming is a trademark of the University) and a picture of a player which happens to have a winged helmet?  It seems like a lot of blogs would be in violation if that weren't the case.

when the photo was taken in public or with rights of the university. this is probably the portion of the law i know the least, though, when it comes to taking a pic of something in the stadium from the stands and then reselling it, etc.

regardless, i believe the fair usage is being lent to original works that are not being executed at the detriment of the university. in that sense, the awesome wallpapers being created are not creating a profit for the creator but drawings then placed on t-shirts come in direct profit competition with university-authorized product and, thus, received the c&d.

again, not entirely sure about these issues but profit seems to always be the decider.

The obvious answer here is that Brian just thinks the current banner is awesome and sometimes unilateral decisions trump democracy. Remember, it didn't even win last year, but the one that did win had copyright problems and Brian just decided to throw this one up there (I don't believe it finished second or anything either) and frankly I have no problem with that, because the banner is great. I agree with maybe an improvement on the theme, but not a total change.

A number change and dreads is a good idea. Also, doing a blueprint for GERG's hair would be funny.
