META: Airing of Grievances - Bye Week Edition

Submitted by MGoClimb on

Just as our beloved Wolverines need to sort some things out over the bye week, so too do we on MGoBoard.  Whether it’s the narrow wins against Akron and UConn or the discussion of recruits, I think we can all admit that things have been more than a little tense around here.  In that light, I am creating an Airing of Grievances: Bye Week Edition thread.

Mods, if you feel this isn’t the right time, or if it spirals out of control, feel free to take this down.  However, I believe this is necessary.

TheGhostofChappuis and BlueDragon – I’ve been thinking about making this for a few days.  Thanks for finally convincing me to do it.

Blah blah blah self-moderating blah blah blah.  I wasn’t around back then.

Time to let it all out, folks.  Go.

and Wolverines Dominate.  Their names are nearly the same, the avatars are nearly the same, but one is really nice and one is really mean.  I believe they may be alter-egos of the same person.  It has really thrown me off.

I don't comment a ton, but I read this 20+ times a day. I used to enjoy reading comments. In the past 6 months, I've started to get irritated by almost all of them, because so many people carelessly post now.

I still enjoy the constructive comments on a lot of threads (Space Coyote immediately jumps to mind) where there are disagreements but it's smart and civil.

it's tiring to read people just being snarky at each other. Sarcastic snarky is great. Actually snark, not so much. MGoBlog is one of the most civil and smart message boards on the interweb but it's been degrading lately

I'll answer it from a mod standpoint - I really have to question the uptick in threads lately where I feel as if I need to post this:

Also, yellowjacket nests. Why the hell do they have to be in the effing ground?

lucky that the nest was at least outside.

We just had to have a nest exterminated last week that had gotten into the attic. They actually chewed thru the drywall ceiling and came pouring into the house!

They were going for the warmth inside the house as it was 34 outside at the time. It was also 6 am when they broke thru and luckily i was still up.

It was not fun.     Not at all.

That was my life for the first two years of being in our new (new to us) home. Got tired of purchasing hornet spray by the case, so on a whim I decided to sit on the front porch with a shop-vac hose with an extension in one hand and a healthy supply of beers in the other. Stuck the hose end near the offending entry spot and presto, thousands of sucked up hornets later I was able to go into the attic and safely remove the remaining hornets and the entire nest without so much as a single sting.

My first grievance is that one of our Mods is an unrepentant Brony despite apparently graduating from Michigan over a decade ago. It's like seeing a cop in a clown costume. Incongruity gives me an uncontrollable eye tic.

My other grievance is that I have to have the word "Brony" in my vocabularly.

If I was ever at Applebee's and Chris Berman got up in my table and uttered one of his tired ass sayings, I would fuck him up. I don't even care that me and my wife wouldn't get to enjoy our delicious 2 for 20$ entrees. Applebee's is just a jazzed up Elby's in my opinion. Fuck them and their stupid commercial. I feel better now.

I love the blog, but we deserve a nuke to be dropped on us. So much complaining. I'm Kenny Powers!! David from Wyoming, you are a prick and you suck. Boom, roasted. Magnus, you are an intelligent snob. Boom, roasted. ChiTown, enjoy your ban. Boom, roasted.

I'm very upset with how I'm acting right now. I just have a very hard time expressing my emotions and I can't stop from yelling. So, I'm very sorry, I DON'T MEAN TO OFFEND YOU, MGOBLOG, YOU HAVE FUCKING PISSED ME OFF, BUT I'M JUST VERY UPSET RIGHT NOW. SO, I'M GOING TO GO AHEAD AND GO, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO STOP YELLIN' BECAUSE THEN THAT'LL MEAN I LOST THE FIGHT!!

If I could ve reset to 0 out of the negatives after the grand noodle spat I would be soooo happyyyy... As for an actual grievance, no spoilers but the finale to Dexter was god damn stupid.

It was honestly about the opposite of what I wanted to happen haha. To each their own. I hope Breaking Bad will be much better. I'm actually only 1.5 seasons in on Netflix and I am hooked. Everyone keeps telling me that I haven't seen anything yet for the show.

No idea, but perhaps the Mods realized that I didn't do anything except voice an opinion that Brian overreacted.  I stand by that opinion, so I suppose maybe I just haven't  controlled the puck and I'm still subject to a delayed ban-hammer.  In the meantime, Bryan Mac has pulled his goalie for an extra attacker.

Maybe a little pendantic but I have banned users since Saturday, just not any that had any intention of actual posting.

To air my grievances about your snarky replies to posters, this kind of little thing always rising up under otherwise perfectly good posts is unwanted. Maybe if it was something capable of filling the box it might be more appreciated, but I don't think anyone is happy with the short stuff any more.

1. Not answering emails.  I know you get them, you've answered me before. Read it and reply. It's not hard. 2. My dryer. Stop breaking. 2b. Stiff clothes from being line dried.

My grievance is with Brian. You'd think a guy who gets to run a sports blog for a living would be much more pleasant and cordial with his users. I can sort of understand his frustrations from the thread last night. Users shouldn't make fun of recruits etc. However, Brian has become so derisive to his user base that it's really off putting. Even before yesterday's meltdown he has shown it. For example, take a look at the last paragraph from the most recent Picture Pages: "Who's up for a tedious 150 comment thread questioning whether it's worthwhile to read this? I certainly am! I hope there are content-free arguments. Let's make sure to ignore Ka'Deem Carey's 2000 yards last year when we're incensed at the idea Rich Rodriguez might be able to coach a run game." Honestly I love the site and all the free content but it's tough to enjoy it when the author is calling you an idiot. Brian obviously thinks the user base is steadily declining and instead of implementing a system to remedy that (maybe the voting system, maybe something else), he is content to just look down at us and insult us because he knows that we have nowhere else to go.

Shut up! Our fathers were our models for Brian. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about Brian?

Listen to me! You have to consider the possibility that Brian does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen.

We don't need him!

Fuck damnation, man! Fuck redemption! We are Brian's unwanted children? So be it!

I would think Brian would be much more pleasant if every post and thread on this board over the past three weeks hadn't devolved into attacks on every part of this site, its staff and everyone in any way connected to Michigan football (fans included).

I would guess that most of us don't appreciate all that is going on behind the scenes, and all the crap we don't see.  Brian probably needs a vacation, but so do I.  Hey, that could be my grievance!  Why doesn't my company give me unlimited vacation time!  Don't they know football season is messing with my health?

All of my grievances are with myself. You all don't phase me. But it is like this me: why do I still think Devin Gardner is so good? He throws like more picks than Denard. ME: wtf man, you're a prick. DG is the man. And is so much better at the throwy part, and pretty good at the run part too. me: damn this line blows. ME: c'mon they are trying. Fuck you, me. me: no Fuck you in your tits, Miller sucks and our best interior lineman is a walk-on! ME: KOVACS! me: I HATE THAT I LOVE THIS TEAM! ME: I love this team. me: This whole season is going to be like Akron. ME: This whole season is going to be like Notre Dame. Can you smell the roses yet, me? me: All I smell is crap dipped in 4-0 sugar. ME: pfft.

I'm tired beyond tired of posters who call for any coach's firing or who say the team sucks before the first half is freaking over. These people need to grow several spare sets and keep them handy, because that is absurd and courts severe weeniedom. But I really think the mods need to start just dumping some of this kind of post because it is starting to drive me away from here on game day. I have already given up on the liveblog, and for a time saw the open thread as a welcome option. But the last two weeks. . . and there is one particular poster who contributes so little and happens to have what looks like the photo of a bad departed QB with a traditional leather helmet on.

Everything else I can live with, tho the site has gotten pretty old school and funky to look on, and the writers sometimes seem to have settled into a fairly predictable and self-reflexive back-patting. (On the other hand, I MISS those endless diaries of Brian's that seemed to bring David Foster Wallace deeper into the realm of sport), some of which really broke new ground in Still love and depend on this place, though.

Also time to bring more M sports, and womens sports, deeper into the fold here. I love and am fascinated by all sports, and can't be the only one.
