META: 504 Gateway Timeouts
Anyone else getting a huge number of these on this site (particularly the message board)? Since the UConn game I've been getting them around half the time I click on a link here. Is a large dose of dilithium dangerous for the blog?

I've been geting them too, though only really today at work, no clue as to why
September 7th, 2010 at 4:20 PM ^
Yeah me too, I had no problems when I was on this weekend, but today at work I have had some issues this afternoon.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
I've been getting them, too. Not as much as you, it sounds like, but fairly frequently. I just assumed it was because of an increase in traffic now that the season has started.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
i get both 504 and 502. is it due to a heavy load on the servers?
September 12th, 2010 at 3:28 AM ^
I think we all know what the 502 "error" was now. Just your friendly neighborhood time travelling quarterback sending a message from the future "Hey guys don't worry. 502, we got this." Dilithium is a wonderful and magical thing.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
Yes, alot more. Hardly any before, but you are right. Its all aboard the bandwagon.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
I prefer to think of it as Freep readers jumping ship.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
My laptop says 220, 221, whatever it takes.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:20 PM ^
You betcha, Jeff.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:20 PM ^
September 7th, 2010 at 4:14 PM ^
Holy crap. I'm getting these all the time. Almost 50% of the time I try to access this site it times out. It's really frustrating.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
about 1/2 the time for me too. Started right after UConn.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:21 PM ^
From the twitters:
Formerlyanon: @mgoblog I'm sure it's not BHGPs going DOS, but I'm getting gateway time outs on the site like crazy the last 3 weeks. New server time?
Mgoblog: @formerlyanon we are working on doing more caching.

HTTP status codes are fairly self explanitory. Here is a long winded run down, but most servers return enough text to let you know where the problem is:
http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html
In these cases, your request is reaching an MGoServer (if there is more than one), but something breaks after that (likely too much traffic).
September 7th, 2010 at 4:26 PM ^
I got the code 4 18 15 16 23 42 and asking me to input it back in. After I did that some symbols came up.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
1969 dude. Don't talk to your doppleganger, and watch out for black smoke.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:55 PM ^
I did find a dude named Richard. Should I follow him around? I don't like this creepy kid named Benjamin though.
September 7th, 2010 at 5:06 PM ^
I can not express how disappointed (worried?) I am that your fantasy involves these two characters and not Evangeline Lilly.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:16 PM ^
Because it only happens to me every 108 minutes or so...
September 7th, 2010 at 4:22 PM ^
Hey, you know what time it is? Time for beveled guilt. Open those pockets MGoBlogorinos:
September 7th, 2010 at 4:23 PM ^
Yep... they're happening
September 7th, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
Brian has spoken of making a living off the site. Yeah, he's also running an albino-midget-shoe-fetish site on the server....
It's killing traffic.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
The albino-midget-shoe-fetish site is for the die-hard MGoBloggers...
September 7th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
It's amazing this site runs as well as it does, I didn't know anyone still had a Gateway that still ran!
*ducks rotting vegetables thrown in his direction*
September 7th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
I just figured it was some coded message for me to take off my pants. Done and done.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
Same here but I only got it on Saturday after the game and today.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
Time to upgrade the hamsters.
September 7th, 2010 at 5:36 PM ^
The little guy is working as hard as he can (the hamster is on vacation).
September 7th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
We are having issues with mysql going down due to either heavy load or one particular thing that eats up a lot of time. It's hard to tell right now but it's a priority we're trying to fix ASAP.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:53 PM ^
Since this is meta anyways, what hardware are you running for the site?
September 7th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
Typically any 500 error is the result from some sort of error on the webserver. Those are usually either internal (coding) errors or load related issues. The latest problems we are seeing are more than likely a result of too much traffic for the servers to handle.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:39 PM ^
mobile app FTW!
September 7th, 2010 at 6:09 PM ^
And it keeps it from sending in posts, and freezing it up. Then Safari is no better. Been happening all weekend.
September 7th, 2010 at 4:41 PM ^
September 7th, 2010 at 4:46 PM ^
I've been getting them fairly often, too. We're popular.
September 7th, 2010 at 5:34 PM ^
I've been having this problem every day since Saturday. Probably a server of cache issue.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
I've also been getting them...but they didn't start until I clicked this 504:Gateway Timeouts post. What did you guys do to my mgoblog?
September 7th, 2010 at 6:13 PM ^
How did I lose 153 mgopoints in 1 click? :/
September 7th, 2010 at 6:29 PM ^
What did you expect? The economy is shit, most people are barely making it between posts... I told you not to invest in that Baby Mop
September 7th, 2010 at 6:31 PM ^
Well, great. Now I need to go out and buy a baby just so I can make it mop my floors.
September 7th, 2010 at 10:51 PM ^
I guess it depends on the baby;
September 7th, 2010 at 9:33 PM ^
I'm guessing a mod probably nuked your points for that awful Pryor vs Denard thread earlier.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
Not fun. Hope some of the engineering mgogeeks & computer mgonerds can get this worked out soon.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:43 PM ^
Yep. Been getting them too. Was virtually impossible for me to access the site Saturday after the game, but, I've been getting a few of them here and there since as well.
