Met Ex-Super Bowl Champ, Diyral Briggs Yesterday

Submitted by Wolfman on

Don't feel alone if name is not familiar to you. I only met him yesterday but not every day one runs into member of World Champs in any sport.

Was walking into my bank to verify balance after returning home for summer and  upcoming football season. While getting the balance, I heard this man next to me say, "Yeah, played in one Super Bowl, would like to get back in the league to try for another." Well, of course this drew my attention and I looked over and he certainly looked the part. Was guessing if defense, had to be a lber (that's what he was) and if offense a real big RB.

Spoke for awhile outside the bank and he is an extremely nice young man. Almost military in his respect, "Yes Sir, No Sir, Thank you Sir, etc."  Asked him about the Super Bowl comment I heard inside the bank, and he said, "Yes Sir, was with the Packers."  He currently lives in Lansing, so guessing either he or wife has family in town(Muskegon).  Said he played with Terrance Taylor. I couldn't fit those two together, but I guess "fringe" players are going to cross paths at some point, probably trying out for a team or two.

Googling the name once I returned home, realized he was a very lucky young man.  Seems as though he only played one season in the league. Was signed by the 49ers, got cut after 5 games, later picked up by the Broncos. Got cut in Oct, picked up by Super Bowl champs a day later and finished the run with them. Was cut the following Aug. If you're going to spend one season in the NFL, why not do it as world champs?

From Cincinnati, he played for Hoke- prior to BH taking SDSU job- at BGSU where he was two time All MAC. Looks like he could still suit up today. Like I said, extremely nice, extroverted young man with genuine smile. Bowling Green should be proud of this one.

That 2010 Packers team had such an epic run as a six seed in the playoffs. That was also the year they got the Favre monkey off their back on two occasions. It'll always be one of my favorite squads.

Wait, so I've tried to read this twice now and mostly failed. But he didn't even play for Michigan? But he played for one of michigans old coaches?

I would love to get his take on this interaction.  I'm guessing it was more like this...

He could still suit up today at 30?  That's crazy.

Genuine smile?

Tell us more about how "articulate" and "well spoken" he is.

You go into the bank to check your balance after returning home for football season in 3 months?  Makes sense.

If I knew how much bullshit this was going to generate gord I wouldn't have done so. Fuckers whine cuz you ain't got fucking whiskey. I ain't going into the articulate shit because I visited that passage. Genuine as sin real dumbass. Yes, once again. Went into the fucking bank to check my balance and perhaps you missed the part about summer prior to the football season. Now I know why some of you can only post once a fucking day. That is once too many imo.

And actually did much more than meet. Conversed daily with many, played cards, etc., in other words, were acquainted with.

Would not have posted this, but there was a post about Woodley a few weeks ago, so I thought people might have interest here. Certainly didn't do it for my own pleasure, and won't bitch about you just posting about not posting about meeting Jason Elam, whoever the hell that is.

I do realize Woodley is one of ours' but hell.....ain't no need splaining.

one of the best kickers of all time. held that tie at 63 yards with a bunch of other guys until it got broker a few years back. holds or at the very least did hold a ton of NFL kicking records or just regular records, including most points ever scored by anybody. dude kicked mainly for the Broncos for something like 20 years. the only reason I know any of this is that I followed Greise up and watched Denver for awhile while the Lions did their SOL deal. Also, I enjoyed your story. thanks for sharing.

Was debating starting a new thread, but I'll just piggy-back yours: I saw Verlander and Rick Porcello once at Motor City Casino. Didn't talk to him, but the girl who was having a birthday party got her picture taken with him.

It's surprisingly easy to have brushes with fame or semi-fame when you're in downtown Detroit, I've found over the years. I was at a meeting downtown once last year and as it let out, I was walking and talking with someone and walked right past Miguel Cabrera, who was there for some corporate event involving the company's philanthropic arm. Sadly, it took a couple feet of walking and not really paying attention before my brain said, "Dumbass, that's Miguel Cabrera..." so no chat.

He was bitiching - this was RB 2004 and hadn't been there that long - about everyone seeing celebs and he had only seen one or two. I asked, "Like the one in front of us?" And he looked up and started laughing. Sure enough, Henry Winkler. He said, that's the type of luck I'm talking about.

I saw Tim Allen in the restaurant at MCC, and boxer Bronco McKart having lunch at the turn on a Monroe golf course. Guy Fieri visited his Vegas Quad casino restaurant while we were eating lunch there.

If you want to see stars, buy me a meal.

The man who just gets home from Mexico. Yes, can do it online there, but with a lot of unexpected events during my trips, wanted to double check. Getting all transaction balances in pesos for half a year will do that. Was not concerned while there, but was doing esitmates based on exchange rates.

But actually good question. Would not have even done so yesterday, but was just driving by, internet hadn't been hooked up yet - about two hrs away yesterday, so wanted to check.

read the whole story. You are right. I should have walked into the exterior wall and shouted, "Hey, what's my fucking balance?"  Will remember that next time. Why weren't you around to gvive me instructions earlier.

Not every one stays in the same place for a continuous 12 months any longer. And when you live six months in the states and six months elsewhere, computer is not hooked up, you do things that you would not do otherwise.

Can't explain to everyone, so any questions, please send them to Mary. She has all the answers now.

It was 1978, I was a pole vaulter in high school and went to Cobo Hall to watch the NCAA indoor track championship. While I was there I met Bruce Jenner. He had won the gold medal in the decathlon two years earlier and was a hero of mine at the time. Now, not so much.

Also, Hoke coached at Ball State and not Bowling Green.

EDIT: In checking this dude never played for Hoke anywhere much less BGSU where Hoke was never at in the first place.

When I was at Bowling Green, I knew Diyral. He is a good man, good head on his shoulders. He and his wife welcomed their first during his RS Junior year and he matured so, so much during that time. He graduated as a highly respected man and was a local celebrity when winning a ring for the Packers. Oh, and that Pitt (Panthers) offensive line is still scared of Briggs. Their tackles probably check under their beds at night not for monsters but for the #99 jersey.
