5th straight US championship for them. Favored to win Gold next year at Olympics.
If you dont know who this refers to, check your UM Fan credentials again.
spoiler alert: i linked this
Current U of M student and Ann Arbor native Evan Bates is part of the 2nd place duo. It's not Karl Malone's fault that he played in the same era as Michael Jordan.
Probably too late to post this since it's dropped off page 1, but now that I've watched my tape of the finals, I feel compelled:
The male halves of all three ice-dancing medal teams are in the picture above (as their slightly younger selves), along with their then college roommate, Trevor Young (a pairs skater who then posted he was going to come back to do a Masters in Industrial and Operations Engineering). I believe Alex Shibutani (lower right-hand corner) and his sister Maia had been silver medalists the last two years, and Evan had been out with an injury. Now that Evan's back with a new partner, they've swept the medals, and all with exquisite routines. Congrats again. (And I love that the picture is courtesy of Meryl!)
I initially thought, "what in the hell did Streep and Sheen do?"
Fail for me.
that's what I thought too.
You know what they did. They "DID IT" ... the nasty!
It had been Meryl Streep and Charlie Weis.
Looking at that couple, I sure hope they did it again tonight. And taped it.
You're disgusting. ( i laughed out loud...)
userpic makes post
Seriously. He's a hunk.
It might not be a bad idea to have heard of the Michigan relay runner.
Who is running in the 4x1 is probably more important, considering they actually compete in an M jersey.
No disrespect at all to these M ice dancers, but they're not UM athletes, they're athletes who are UM students. It's great that many of you know them, but it does now affect your UM fanhood if you don't know who they are.
I'm sure there are many UM students doing incredible things that most of us don't know about.
But I bet you don't mind associating him with the University. And he didn't even really finish being a student. We had a number of athletes track and otherwise at the last Olympics. They're kind of a big deal around the world.
It wasn't worded the most politically, but he didn't say "if you didn't watch it you're not a real Michigan fan." No one said you have to like ice dancing. Just HEARD of them. And if one has never heard of them I'm guessing that person is just a fan of football; and maybe basketball, now. The type of guy screaming to "take Denard out, put in Tate!" last season probably thinks of himself as a diehard fan too. Just not a very well informed one.
that girl was hot
and then later find out it was actually HIM (Charlie...)!
Friends of theirs and very proud!
If you do know who this refers to, double check to make sure you still have a set of testicles.
My sister is a former US champion figure skater. As much as I hate the sport my balls are still there.
You get a pass for extenuating circumstances. Others? Not so much
I checked. Testicles still there.
Is my statement any more outrageous than the op's? Clearly hyperbole but whatever
Not to worry. There are a lot of easily offended nancies on this blog.
Glad to see redneck concepts of gender norms are alive and well even among Michigan fans, even if it's just for a bad punchline. You make Coors Light and Buffalo Wild Wings' marketing department's proud.
The only one who had that thought...
Hey, I fucking love Coors Light. I can drink a shitload of it without spending much money, and I try to drink as much of it as possible, especially during the summer. There's nothing gender normative about it.
The only real problem with it is when my dumb wife mistakes it for her Diet Coke when I tell her to grab me one from the fridge.
FUCK, GUYS, I CAN'T FIND THEM, I'VE CHECKED EVERYWHERE, SOMEONE RADIO FOR HELP!!!
There need to be a This is Awesome tag.
I think you meant to say "Wow, I did not know about these two kickass Michigan students and their accomplishments in the world arena for their sport. Thank you"
I mean, it's fine, even understandable, to not know sh*t about ice dancing, even without a genital check. But I'd like to think that Michigan fans would be glad to fill in that small knowledge gap given who Davis/White are.
Yes, tremendous, laudable accomplishment. Certainly more notable than anything I've accomplished in my 25 years. But my not knowing who they are at first mention doesn't make me any less of an M fan than the OP.
The last time they won a medal I made an (allegedly) inappropriate joke and lost all of my points for a month.
Now I wanna hear the joke.
Two figure skaters walk into a bar...
...and say "ouch"
I want gold to join silver back here in Ann Arbor! Go Blue!
Last Olympics I tried to pretend I knew Meryl because I was friends with a girl in her sorority. And yes this was the cool story broiest thing I have ever posted here
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman, would it?
I'd take a pretty girl like that with talent and ambition over a Kate Upton type any day.
nevertheless, i agree
Yet another example of the excellence for which the University of Michigan stands.
Hail to the Victors!
Representin the U-M well. no matter the sport.
Some of you guys out there need to check yourselves and quit trying to call out people for knowing or supporting these things.
A real man doesn't need to prove things to anyone, especially strangers on a blog.
Evan Bates, another Wolverine, won silver in the same competition with his partner Madison Chock.
there somewhere, but I'm too hungover to find it.
Thanks for the support? From some of you anyway... and I see you David. Haha, for as much as I do this skating thing, I'm actually a bigger U of M football fan. I'm on this site as often as possible as it's a great distraction from training. I'm not much of a poster, but that doesn't mean I'm not clinically addicted.
Thanks again and-
You make fellow alumni proud. Good luck in the Olympics. We'll be on the edge of our seats!
Charlie you are da man. and anyone who thinks your sport isn't for guys should probably ask what's the downside of training 12 hrs a day 7 days a week with Meryl.
The spelling and grammer in this post is way too good for just having won a National Championship. Hopefully you get a chance to celebrate appropriately sometime soon.
of you and your skating roomies with all the M decor to defend your macho cred. Big fan of the whole Michigan skating crew, and was actually watching the tape of yesterday when I saw the post title. (Yes, it gave the results away, but I wasn't surprised.) [Pause to watch your short program.]
Former dancer here who wouldn't possibly have the courage to make the impossible look so easy on the ice, and with those sabers on your soles. I confess to be one whose fascination/obsession with Michigan football often requires defense of my femme cred. Yes, it's possible to be a fan of both (but certainly not required or even expected). Having a home team to root for has much to do with the depth of the fandom.
So thanks to you and Meryl and your M-related practice-mates for prompting me to learn how far ice-dancing has gone since I watched as a child, and making American ice-dancing not only a part of the international discussion but bringing it to the pinnacle. You're a joy to watch.
Chaz Michael Micheals is better though
Right now, I'd rather watch these two skate than the men's hockey team. 100% serious.
Whoever negged this sucks. Even if you don't like figure-skating/dancing you should respect the Michigan athletes that are competing at a world class level and be proud of how they're representing our University.

Go play at MLive.
I explained why I negged it. I don't give a shit. (EDIT: that you're calling me out on it). Some people get jokes, even terrible ones. It doesn't mean that I don't respect them or their accomplisments. Even when I made fun of the dude after the olympics, I still respected him.
the snide comment at the end. I don't care about ice skating/dancing/cream. Congrats to two U of M athletes, but this isn't going to be something I bring up when debating athletics with friends or family that root for other schools. So to say that I am not a real fan because I don't follow ice dancing shows how juvenile some people here can be. "Oh, you don't like some 3rd or 4th rate athletic competition? Well, I do, so I am a better fan." Yeah, I don't know who the #2 doubles team in women's tennis is either, so I should probably start buying Buckeye gear. GTFOH
Oh, and I didn't neg this thread.
This is reason number 2 why I negged the thread.
I think people are taking that last OP statement a little too seriously and personally.
Look at it this way. If you considered yourself a true U of M fan, wouldn't you want to know about this? Wouldn't you be glad to learn of it?
I'll admit I didn't remember their names were Meryl and Charlie, but the OP reminded me and I didn't need to look it up. They were a major discussion topic on MGoBlog during the last Olympics as well. So, yeah, if you consider yourself a fan of the University, you should probably know about them.
If you only claim to be a fan of football, then maybe not. But, I don't necessarily have the highest regard for those that think UM is only a football team anyway, so perhaps I'm pretty biased.
I think you're taking negs too seriously. They don't mean anything. If I could, I would neg myself every post because it's funny that some people take it seriously.
going to be about before I opened it, so I'm not taking anything personally. Even though I was kind of hoping it was Streep/Sheen being batshit crazy. I just think it's RCMBish to question anyone's loyalty or fandom when referring to ice dancing. If this statement came at the end of a Devin Gardner, Trey Burke, or Jon Merril related topic, I would feel the same way. And I feel any fan should know who they are.
OP was a little trollish. Agreed.
You could have made that point without slamming a sport as "3rd or 4rth rate athletic competiton."
FWIW, Charlie White was a pretty decent hockey player, left the sport to pursue ice dancing more seriously. But then again I don't know where hockey fits in your ranking.
have the idea that differing opinons aren't welcome here. Because, for the life of me, I don't know where they would get that.
EDIT-And I meant it in terms of popularity, not that it doesn't require skill or athleticism.
I don't understand the gripe in your first sentence. Who's not allowing the board to have differing opinions? I happened to think your comment was, in its own way, also trollish, so I pointed it out.
That said, I do appreciate the clarification. If you said "ice dancing ranks 3rd or 4th in terms of popularity" I confess I would have thought that was odd (I'd put it lower than that, frankly) but I wouldn't have that that was trollish and I wouldn't have said anything to you. No sensible person on this board would attempt to argue with you that ice dancing is more popular than the sports normally discussed here.
FWIW I may not be only one who reads your post the way I did (as a slam on the sport). In the vernacular there is a definite connotation of a quality judgment when you use terms like "X-rate." It's obvious tha t"First-rate" would mean "best" but instead of just being an ordinal ranking after that, terms like 2nd,- 3rd, and 4th-rate are often used as a pejorative.
I didn't know about Charlie and Meryl but just read up on them. Great story and I'm looking forward to rooting for them and watching them in the Olympics.
BTW, the OP did a bad job with this post by taking a great story and turning it into a negative and divisive jab. Get rid of the negativity next time. Could have been a better thread.
I don't know Charlie, but Meryl's parents are lifelong friends, and I've known Meryl since she was a baby - in fact, my daughters babysat her.
She is a down-to-earth, wonderful young woman. I'm proud she is part of the Michigan family.
Ice dancing requires tremendous athleticism and the training is incredible, as with any world-class sport. Some of the comments here are a little questionable.
