Mental Illness Awareness / Remembering Garrick Roemer

Submitted by garricks_dad on

I have been reading mgoblog for a number of years and have witnessed great support by the mgoblog community supporting people/causes in need.

May 4th of this year my son Garrick, a UM student-athlete, died by suicide (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/garrick-roemer-mens-track-commits-suicide).

Today would have been his 20th birthday. I am asking that we not only remember him today, but to raise awareness about suicide, depression and mental illness. In addition, I would like to ask for donations to the UM Depression Center in his name: https://depression.umich.edu/giving/?to=GarrickRoemer

This would be an incredible birthday present in my sons name for our family, but more importantly these donations will assist in medical research, education, and public policy so that hopefully, no other families and friends will have to endure such great pain and loss.

Thank you all and Go Blue!

Mr. Roemer, my heart goes out to you and your family this week. I know firsthand that seeing your child suffer from depression is heart-wrenching, frustrating, and so much more. It's a battle you share with him. To see him lose the battle must be an overwhelming tragedy, absolutely heartbreaking. My own son has battled those demons, he'll be 20 later this week. I'm going to see him on his birthday and in addition to hugging him a little longer than usual, I'll sit down with him and talk about what Garrick achieved as a Michigan student athlete, and we'll make a donation together.

My Dad worked for the Michigan Department of Mental Health for many years. It's a subject that hits close to home for me. My Dad died of cancer last year. Losing a father is tough enough, I can't even imagine what it must be like to lose a son. Peace be with you and your family.

Stay strong.  Birthdays and holidays are the toughest.  I have had a huge loss this year, too, and I am not looking forward to their birthday.

My mom sufferered from depression and eventually found her voice to talk about it, hoping to make a difference in other people's lives.  I know that you are doing just that by talking publicly about Garrick.

I hope MANY of us on here are supporting you with more than words through the donation link above.  May God grant you peace.

For all people who have problems with insomnia, I recommend trying CBD oil. I have already advised all my friends and they have been using this advice for a long time and thank me. I advised them to look at these CBD oils in the UK and they all chose different sites, but everyone is very happy with the quality of the product, because these are the best companies.
