i refuse to even consider this a possibility
Surprising roster moves tonight. Rohrkemper and Sinelli are scratched, Sparks and Selman are in. Nieves and Copp both bumped Treais. Racine starts in net.
Or performance related?
With the Goalies, I think it's pick your poison; all 3 have 3+ GAA.
Sinelli had been playing well, Sparks hadn't played since Bowling Green. Copp and Nieves are red hot right now.
I'm going to subject myself to this. Haven't gotten to see a M hockey game on TV in a few months.
...maybe that's why we haven't been winning
Aren't you supposed to be coaching? I'm starting to think you aren't the real Red Berenson...
get a W! I'm sitting 4 rows behind the penalty box! Go Blue!
Wish I was too.
I was at that game. I had a douchebag buckeye throw a snowball at the back of my head during the game.
isn't that redundant?
Happened to us too. Was a great time though. No better way to kick off that event then getting free beers before the game at the labatt blue (simply because we are Canadians) party down the street.
but I will happily take University of Michigan sports moments as bright spots in the athletic history of Cuyahoga County.
Copp is easily the best penalty killer on this team. With his work on the PK, defense, and his scoring big things are coming from Andrew Copp in the future.
...but UM looked good on both the PP and PK; good fore/backchecking.
Go figure that BTN works every day since I get Time Warner and then I flip to BTN at 6:27 to watch the Michigan game and all of a sudden it doesn't work
If you have your information for can watch the game on BTN.com
Let's Go Blue! Beat OSU!
Dang, we're in 10th, 3 pts ahead of MSU, which is @ AK.
M on the power play in the 1st.
Up 1-0 with 4:38 left in the first.
Puts back his own rebound on the PP, it's 1-0 Michigan.
He's having his way with the Buckeyes out there tonight. He's bringing the hits harder then usual.
Our PP is 4th in the CCHA?!?! Inconceivable!
We've scored the second-most goals in the CCHA, both overall and in conference play. Unfortunately, we've given up the most goals by a wide margin, 88 in conference play (next closest: Alaska with 76) and 109 overall (next closest: FYS at 90).
Slashing penalty against Michigan. Total weak sauce.
Michigan will have to start stylizing this program as men's hockey on their website in about 4-5 years.
Just a little teaser for what will soon be announced about adding the 27th varsity sport.
Because you pretty much just told us that we're adding women's hockey on the 27th. Is this actually happening?
Yes. I have a very reliable source. One who told me about the ADept's plan to add lacrosse 5 years before it happened.
There is still a lot of things they have to clear like where they would play, but it's coming.
So I see a message about doing something to protect student atheletes. Then there is a typical basketball play with a girl scoring a layup. then the other team doesn't seem to want to pick up the ball.
Next a message comes up "you can protect greatness."
finally, the Ohio compliance dept. website and twitter account come up.
It seems like they are intentionally using a run of the mill Womens' bball highlight to belittle this ad and issue.
Michigan and MSU in the basement. I'd be surprised if that's ever happened before
Michigan can rebound but I don't think MSU can. Western is starting to recruit in-state programs and in the USHL pretty well that they were not getting before. The talent is drying up in East Lansing.
Both teams haven't missed the NCAA tourney since 1981 IIRC. Crazy. Somewhat expected b/c Comley left them in a crappy position. I didn't expect us to be top 5 like our preseason ranking suggested, but I certainly never thought we'd be this bad.
but I see the talent on the ice and think that this should be a good team, then they start skating and they just...are not a good team. I do not understand (that's probably the 50th time I've said that this season)
but that was the best cycle I've seen out of them all season.
You could see how worn out the buckeyes were getting. I'm assuming that since they iced it they don't get to change here?
GO IN THE NET. So much pressure, so little goals
like I Play Minor League Hockey in Florida ugly
An ECHL team in Florida came out with one of the coolest uniforms I have even seen. So cool that they were selling for thousands of dollars on NHL Auction.
but those just look like another case file in ugly minor league uniforms
Our little rocket on skates. He's so fast, but he just can't score. Score dammit.
is posbanging this thread
or if the cameras are too zoomed in like they usually are (across all networks and sports, this isn't a BTN thing).
Eh, didn't miss it, just didn't quite think that was penalty worthy. Good for Michigan, at least, no complaints here.
Jacob Trouba has a f'ing bomb of a shot. Holy crap
suck on it ohio, fuck yea!
you are a beast in the making. I still want MOOOOOOORE GOALS though.
One, two, three one-timers; GOAL!
already this period. A ton of great chances that just didn't find their way in
Hey, we won the 2nd period!
Keep it going! BEAT OHIO!
us live tonight. How do we not have a better record?
Usualy they come out hard like this every game, but one little mistake and a goal against they just shutdown. Once things start to go bad, there is no one to stop the bleeding.
C'mon, BTN, we taught 'em script Ohio.
My wife, a Filipina unfamiliar with most American sports, has come to embrace Michigan football, basketball and even peruses this very site. She is still convinced that hockey is bat-shit crazy though; didn't stop from cheering an 8 oz. puck ending up in net behind a guy from cbus.
I was on the train last weekend on my way to the Hawks game, there were some Wisconsin fans heading to the Hockey City Classic. I asked if they were excited as we are for B1G hockey, they started whining about losing the rivalry with St. Cloud State. Huh.
I don't know how excited I would be either. Well, PSU and OSU might be happy just to be there, content to get theirs when they can and hopefully have a good chance at an at-large bid in a ridiculous conference, but Wisconsin and MSU seem to have a lot to lose from the BTHC.
Maybe they don't see things that way, but I don't see a ton of upside for the two historical middle schools.
I feel like I just saw a local access TV commercial from the 90s
with an "Ohio is for lovers" T-shirt. I asked her, "I don't understand; perhaps you were thinking of Virginia?"
This game is way more enjoyable when we are actually playing good even though we've left a few goals out there.
or is that a massive black hole
2-1. Looked a bit soft but Racine might've been screened
Shit, they score, 2-1 U-M.
Especially given the time and score. I have no idea what Hyman was thinking there.
Maybe he was thinking he'd rather it not be 2-2?
so maybe I overreacted, but it didn't look like he needed to put a Buckeye through the net to do take him out of the play.
Also, wooo Moffatt!
then the buckeye slowed and Hyman bowled him over
with the forwards back turned.
Ugh. Every time I reply in this mini-thread someone scores. It's 1-1, but I'd just as soon have no more goals than another two.
and couldn't put it in
Am I missing something?
please. So much pain
Penalty on Lynch. 11:19 left in the third.
The B1G guys say it was good, but that was a weak call.
How did Racine get to that???
(or maybe they just missed)
I need to watch more often, we look like an actual team tonight.
I was thinking the same thing
Puck was in the net before Moffatt touched him
Nieves already has the passing of an NHL player, he's going to be more than special down the line at Michigan.
Plus, got to drill the goalie afterwards
because I had been reliving the Duluth game ever since they mentioned it
...who am I kidding. I'm still having terrible flashbacks to that game. Specifically Hagelin and Rust's 2-on-0 with 5 minutes left that we couldn't put in. I think I have minor PTSD
everytime they look to set him up for a one-timer. They fear
FUCK! They score, 3-2 now.
Trouba right in front of me. Talented but maybe a space cadet.
Rare mistake from Trouba, it's 3-2.
Play the puck in deep, protect the blue line and burn clock.
Great passing, great finish. HAIL!
Beautiful 2-on-1! 4-2
THE WHISTLES GO WOOOOOOO!!!
Goofy bounce; goal
Fucking face masks...
SONUVABITCH!!! They score, 4-3.
Racine was the one who knocked it in technially. May have been going in regardless
Empty netter. M up 5-3.
DeBlois with empty netter, 5-3. Phew!
This game has been a mix of us scoring beautiful goals followed up by terrible depressing OSU goals. I just feel tired right now
Good win boys, well done.
But sheesh that was exhausting. In this season, I'll take it.
Do we own Ohio in hockey? I remember we swept them last year in Columbus when they were favored
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Always nice to beat Ohio!
But damn, only the 2nd road win of the season. Where was this kind of play earlier this season?
snow-angel and diving-off-the-roof into a snowbank goalie style, the good guys win!
BTW: My wife is right. Hockey is bat-shit crazy.
Always great to beat a rival. Might cost them home ice and possibly even a first round bye. Spoiler is pretty much all we can do right now.
Even in our worst season, we can still kick both state and ohio's ass.
Love it. SWEEP TOMORROW!!
isn't amazing how far Western has come in just 3-4 years. I remember them being in last place in the CCHA with some kind of appalling record then they get Blashill and they do a 180 and now their new coach is keeping the ball rolling (for now)
Not sure how he ended up at Western. Good for them, I hope they make a run at the national title.
No connections to WMU that I know of and a huge NHL background. I don't know how they got him, but somehow Murray ended up at WMU.
Like I mentioned earlier, he's doing some great recruiting over there. Right under State's nose from the team that Ron Mason works for, he goes and gets one of the top prospects in the USHL Fredrik Tiffels. The guy knows what he's doing.
They said something (I only caught half of it) about someone in the Blues organization, maybe a player or exec, was a Western alum and told Murray that he "needed to do this for [his] school" and that's how the connection was made
was even sweeter seeing it live. Michigan has talent. Hopefully we can rebound next year. I love beating Ohio's ass.
Was at the game, lots of Mich fans there. Nice job!
was nice. I might go tomorrow night.
In this strange season any road win is a big deal, but it's that much sweeter coming against them.
WMU's coach should be Berenson's successer.
I thought it said West Virginia...
I think he's a great coach but at some point I see him going back to the NHL.
I wonder if Red would have retired on top if we had won the national title in 2011. At that time, Mel was mentioned as Red's successor.
Brandon has said that he wants a guy with HC experience and it shows in almost all the hires that he has made. Bakich, Hoke, Kim Barnes Arico, Chaka Daley were all HC elsewhere before being hired. I don't think he would have hired Mel back then.
It's always nice to get a win against Ohio State. Recap here: http://centericehockey.us/content/ohio-state-recap
The more pain we inflict on Channel 10 Wall-to-wall Sports, the better. They were pretty jittery about the D after the Ohio-IU game earlier this year (football).
hasn't really (or at least statistically) been Michigan's weakness this year, but it's nice to see that Nieves and Trouba are #2 and 3 respectively in rookie scoring, in the conference. Only Boo from the entire team cracks the top-10 point getters in the CCHA, at #10 and it feels like Michigan isn't scoring that much, but overall, they lead the conference (as of this afternoon) with a 3.00 goals for/game, a little above Notre Dame at #2 and about .3 above Ferris State at #3. In just conference games, Notre Dame leads with 3.24, way above Michigan's 2.8 which is slightly above Miami's 2.76. I guess the scoring is just pretty balanced, instead of having a true superstar (though give Boo a year and I can easily see him filling that role).
As everybody has noticed, the defense and goaltending are atrocious. I guess that's just what it is. I think the team/coaches have kinda noticed/accepted that and dedicated themselves more to offense, trying to get it and keep it, in the opponents zone and minimize the time they need to play defense, even with taking some risks to do that.
Special teams are almost starting to look like what you'd expect from Michigan again. Especially with Trouba, the PP is absolutely deadly and the PK has started to step up. I'm not quite sure how one gives up a shorthanded goal, up 2, with 5 minutes left, on the road, but I guess this is (this year's) Michigan. I've never liked a forward on the point, I trust Red and I know Babs does it sometimes, but I just hate it. They have Moffie, Bennt and Trouba as some really offensively-gifted D-men and Merrill is a great PP quarterback. I know Moffie hasn't been so great this year, but I still don't see the need to use Treais on the point.
I don't know that I can say enough about Copp. He just does everything. I really hope he gets a letter next year, he does a lot of things really, really well. Doesn't have the top-level skill, but he's always making things happen, defensively and offensively. Only Trouba might also get that distinction and sometimes Trouba's version of "making things happen" on defense isn't good for Michigan... Nieves is also turning into something special and I think the team as a whole has brought it's level up some. With more imrovement and some luck, I could see them winning a first-round series. But if all that gives them is a date with Miami in Oxford for a best 2-of-3, I'm not hopeful of continuing beyond that.
