Mens Basketball vs Bowling Green Open Thread
Just thought I would get this started for those who are watching the game. Michigan up 3-2 early.

but guy gets up there on the glass and i like his D. and he's definitely lacking that O polish.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
better than I had heard and expected...he's polished
November 18th, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
Looking very sharp here - not sure how good BG is but we look crisp. This is definitely Beilein's game
November 18th, 2010 at 8:26 PM ^
Our offense is firing on all cylinders. It's raining 3's, were getting plenty of 2nd chances. I still think our D needs to improve.

BG has 3 points in 8 minutes

Lights out tonight from the field.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
appears much more comfortable on the offense end than i expected. a pleasant surprise there. i was only hoping for rebounds out of him.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
I hadn't realized exactly how young this team was until I looked up and saw 3 freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior on the floor. This team has potential to be pretty solid in the future. I could see them surprising some people this year too.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:33 PM ^
are the only two upperclassmen. and they're both back next year. i like what i see thus far out of the kids, but i'm not too optimistic this year. i don't see them sniffing the ncaa for two more years.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:31 PM ^
Up 20 with 10 mins left
November 18th, 2010 at 8:31 PM ^
Too bad McLimans didn't redshirt last year. He's bigger but would be nice if this were his first year
November 18th, 2010 at 8:33 PM ^
22 | Blake McLimans | 6-10 | 240 | Forward | RS FR | Hamburg, N.Y. (Worcester Academy [Mass.]) |
November 18th, 2010 at 8:35 PM ^
oh...my mistake...sorry...I thought he had played...that is good
I got used to seeing him in uniform all year and made the assumption. Thanks for the correction
November 18th, 2010 at 8:34 PM ^
...redshirt last year and this is his first year.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:38 PM ^
thanks I just caught that...that's a good thing...I was at a bunch of games last year and got used to seeing him in uniform
November 18th, 2010 at 8:51 PM ^
He did play in a couple game early, but basketball has a rule where as long as you play in under 5-10 games (I don't know what the actual number is) you can still redshirt
November 18th, 2010 at 8:35 PM ^
i'm almost positive he redshirted. i don't ever remember seeing him play. you may be confusing him with cronin, who played sparingly than had to quit due to injury.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:40 PM ^
nope...you're right...been busy correcting myself
I just remember standing near the court last year watching him in warmups and thinking this guy is way too thin to be playing now...did not realize he hadn't

Gritty Novak is very gritty. Repping the bloody nose.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:34 PM ^
As good as Sims and Harris were, and I loved them both, watching this you can see what a difference it makes when everyone seems to be playing the right position

...nope.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:44 PM ^
...Smotrycz' confidence wearing the 23 jersey.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:47 PM ^
...finish very well inside. Will be a problem as the season progresses.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
Novaks is an animal!
November 18th, 2010 at 8:50 PM ^
Novak's transition blocks are awesome.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
hardaway junior looks the part of baller. thus far his play is backing it up (albeit his second game). guy has a nose for the game and seems to be mentally tough. I'm excited for this squad.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
...bench time.
November 18th, 2010 at 8:56 PM ^
has to be the best game of shooting 3s in the beilein era. anything close to this going forward on a consistent basis would be huge.
November 18th, 2010 at 9:06 PM ^
Yes 8-17 is phenomenal. Real nice ball movement tonight, Hardaway PT in the 2nd half, paid big dividends for Morgan.
Smot and Hardaway both have their heads up when they catch the ball, step one in being a smart player. This team will be fun to watch all season if they play this intelligent and this unselfish.
November 18th, 2010 at 9:02 PM ^
Novak has to be one of the hardest working dudes in basketball...
November 18th, 2010 at 9:19 PM ^
Did Bowling Green play much 2-3 zone, as advertised?
How did UM shoot against the zone? How did they move the ball to move the zone?
What defense or defenses did UM play? Any 1-3-1? If so, who ran the baseline?

BG mixed up zone and man

Good looks and got pretty much whatever shot on the floor they wanted. Looked pretty good against man. Lots of good looks of screens

Mostly man, and mixed in the 1-3-1 a bit.
Solid effort

IMO this team will not frustruate me as last years did because of the way they are playing within the system. Last year with Manny and Peedi they were very talented, but took so many bad shots game after game. They are going to struggle in the stacked Big Ten, but they could become a team that you do not want to face down the stretch. Just my opinion
November 18th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^
We look like we could be a solid underated team this year. Go Blue!
November 18th, 2010 at 10:17 PM ^
I think it's time for the football team to consider going to a 1-3-1.
November 18th, 2010 at 10:19 PM ^
Don't want to get too crazy based on Bowling Green, but I liked a lot of the little things I saw out of the team, especially the extra passes to open guys. Novak's first runaway block was the turning point of the game but I liked his second one better: up by buckets inside of three minutes, most guys would have just said, "fuck it, let 'em have those two." That's a guy who's gonna teach the younguns how the game is played.
November 18th, 2010 at 10:23 PM ^
"That's a guy who's gonna teach the younguns how the game is played."
Exactly. A point that a couple folks around here made is that the only major difference between the tournament team and last year's debacle was the absence of CJ Lee & David Merrit - not exactly big points contributors. However, both were smart players (esp Lee) who were great locker-room leaders. Harris & Sims, for all their top-shelf talent, are just quiet dudes by nature. With Novak as the top upperclassman on this team, I look to him to take over that role behind the scenes, during timeouts, etc. He certainly leads with his play on the floor, I hope he takes it to the next level.
November 18th, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
We also lost Kelvin Grady a year ago. Between him, Lee and Merrit we basically lost all our minutes at PG from the year before - and also three of our best 3-point shooters. No one really stepped up to replace them. This year Morris looks ready to be the floor leader.
November 18th, 2010 at 11:59 PM ^
Also Jevohn Shepherd, who I always thought looked good while he was on the court. It always boggled my mind that he wasn't getting more PT. He was one of the few guys on that squad able to penetrate into the lane.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:27 AM ^
I somewhat agree: I don't think Jovohn was much on offense except for the athleticism to penetrate that you rightfully point out, but I really thought he was an asset on defense, and that alone should have garnered him a few more minutes a game. He always harassed the guy he was defending with high effort and exhibited both quickness and strength, and he also always seemed to hustle and be quick on the chase for loose balls, which I guess is like saying he was an athletic, gritty guy. Who deserved more burn.
November 18th, 2010 at 10:42 PM ^
We're starting to look like a "classic" John Beilein team - good size, guys who can play multiple positions, good ball movement and solid shooting. We're super-young and going to take our lumps this season, but you can see the potential in this group.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:43 AM ^
My impressions from the first three games:
-We look like a "bigger" team. Now that novak is playing his correct position, we don't have the extreme small feeling.
-Morris is a true point guard, and the first one we've had in a while. He's good, real good.
-Novak is pure grit. He gets the Hard Edge award for sure.
-Vogrich....well i had high hopes for him last year, but i just truly can't see him being great. He has made a lot of costly errors and seems to just be purely outmanned in just about every aspect. With that said, he does have a nice shot, but unless he irons out the rest of his game, the costs out weigh the benefits.
-Colton Christian and Horford seem to be a good role players for this year. They probably won't do amazing things their first year, but don't seem to really "mess up" much when they're in. Christian is actually much larger of a person than i expected. Sadly, i have to almost include Stu in this section. He doesn't seem to have made the strides i was expecting, but still can benefit the team.
-Evan Smotrycz looks to be a great player that will contribute a lot this year.
-Morgan and Mclimans both look good. I would give the edge to Morgan but they both seem to do well at C.
-Last but not least, Hardaway Jr. He seems like he could be a star this year. I'm very surprised by how well he looks his first year here.
I know this analysis is only based on playing shitty teams, so I didn't want to extrapolate too much. We'll obviously know more about this team in a few weeks. We look to be playing like a team and I like it. We aren't going to be amazing this season, but I think we will definitely be better than what I was expecting from before the season.

This team is more balanced sans Sims and Harris. The scoring will be distributed a lot more and it seems there's quite a bit of depth, albeit young depth. Morris is the key. If he plays like that consistently, this will be a good team. Morgan looks to be a rebounding machine and has the beef to compete in the Big Ten. Hardaway looks like a natural. Novak and Douglass will provide good leadership. In short, I can already tell I like this team a lot and it's too early to buy into the doomsday predictions for the year.
