Mel Pearson or Guy Gadowsky?
I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Mel would obviously be easier to get because he has ties here and has maxed out at Michigan Tech. What do you guys think about Gadowsky? They have a beautiful facility in State College and he has a good team. On the other hand, Michigan is a blue blood program while PSU is just 5 years old. Who do you want as your next hockey coach?

I'd be utterly disappointed if it wasn't Pearson. Him returning to Michigan would feel almost like Harbaugh returning to the football program in the metaphysical sense. I mean, in this reality, both men were essentially created to live long happy lives as pillars of their communities and coach Michigan sports.

as well, but your analogy could use a little work given that he played is college hockey in Houghton and was then an assistant there for several years immediately afterward.

He had been doing most of the heavy lifting for Red for years before he left. Had we been possessed of a real AD, Red might have been encouraged to set a departure date and transition to Mel. Mel is not a kid, but I think he will give us 10 years and get the program back on track.

I'd love to have Gadowsky as his work in State College has been nothing short of fantastic but I don't know if he'd consider leaving. Mel making Tech decent again is a minor miracle as well but he's also starting to get up there in age so not sure how long we'd have with him if we got him

Mel Pearson is 57 years old. He could easily coach another 10 years, maybe even 15 years.

I know the team is playing bad, but that is a bit harsh calling them a peewee team.

Shouldn't it be Manuel's job to evaluate the appropriate time for Red to depart if he's not coming to the same conclusion? What am I missing?

Ten years ago, when Red stopped doing the heavy lifting, it was his call on when to step down. Not any more. It's time for Warde to have a heart-to-heart with Red and make sure he knows that if Red wants to control his own destiny, he needs to act now.
January 20th, 2017 at 5:25 PM ^
for the clarification.
January 20th, 2017 at 9:33 AM ^
Red coming back for another year was more Wardes decision than it was Reds. Warde asked Red if he would come back for one more year, so he didn't have to go on a coaching search right when he became the AD. If it was solely up to Red he would've left last year, he stayed because Warde wanted him back for one more year.

I thought the advantage of Warde was that he was supposed to be an experienced AD - you wouldn't think he'd need training wheels. A not really revenue sport "coaching search" with one super obvious candidate and a money cannon at your disposal is hardly high stress.

Maxed out at Tech? Ouch. That program has won a few national championships in the past.
January 20th, 2017 at 7:30 AM ^
Just going by his 14-9 record. I don't he will ever win a NC there. That makes it an easier sell for Michigan.
January 20th, 2017 at 7:36 AM ^
status, but should he stay, I'm guessing he will. The job would be easier here. He'd also get more money and have more cultural opportunities. However, he'd be a medium fish in a pond dominated by nuclear submarine in A2. In Houghton he's the star at his alma mater. He's probably feeling pretty good.

Even Bo had a 6-6 year, but I don't think anyone extrapolates one year into a career, especially this early. Not unless your are incredibly foolish.

Maxing out as last year's conference champion isn't too bad.

so not Babcock then eh?
IDK why Gadowski is brought up. why would he leave penn st?
I wish Red retired 8-10 years ago so a run with Mel would be 12-15 years before retirement. he's almost 60 I think?

Mel is 57. Will turn 58 in February.

I gotta be honest...I don't follow hockey closely. At first, I was like Mike Wazowski? Smh...I been watching Monsters Inc too much with the kids.

Resurrect Toe Blake.
If he's not available, I guess I would not mind Gadowski. Great coach, plus it would wound Penn State. I'm kind of anti-Penn State in general, what with the long history of aiding, abetting, and then conspiring to cover up the rape of children.
Pearson, though, is the natural fit. Could not go wrong with either.

1. Dave Hakstol. He is my #1 pick above Mel but I don't think there's a chance he's leaving the NHL for Michigan. That said, he won at North Dakota and is winning in Philly. Excellent head coach.
2. Mel Pearson of course.
3. Gadowski. Unreal what he has done at PSU. They're ranked #1 in the nation right now.
4. Jim Montgomery (U of D). Denver has made the NCAA playoffs (we talkin' bout playoffs?!?) every year he has been their coach. At Denver. I know theye were good back in the mid-2000s but, LSSU was good in the 90s and so was Northern Michigan.
5. Rick Bennet (Union College)
Most of the other coaches that are top quality in college are at their alma mater and have been for a long time (Ted Donato-Harvard; Rand Pecknold- Quinnipiac; David Quinn - BU)

I wouild be very happy with either of them. I'd prefer Mel, because to me he would be the returning hero coming back to fix things. Gadowsky has done an unbelievable job at Penn St., but I'm not sure he would leave. One of those two and I'm happy.
I think there's also a non-zero chance that Red wants to come back next year. If Warde doesn't do the right thing and tell him no, I could live with that on one condition - he has to get rid of Wiseman. It's obvious he's letting Wiseman run the team and it's obvious Wiseman isn't coaching a system very well.

i'm wondering if he'll not take the HINT!
i''m not so sure we won't be having this same discussion next year.

be a blue blood, but in just 5 years Guy has a team ranked #1 in the country. Not bad for starting from scratch.
I would be happy with either one.
