Not entirely surprised with the speculation that was going on and not a super huge loss as he can still come back.

All in all it's a big story but I don't know if it's OH NO's.

prepared for this, a few weeks ago and rationalized why it might not be so bad, but now that it's happened and taken me by surprise, I'm quite nervous  Especially with the combination of the OHL draft tomorrow and what happens to the recruits we have lined up for the next couple years with Mel, "The best recruiter in college hockey"(-Mike Cammalleri) leaving.  And the relative uncertainty surrounding where the program is going in 2 years, after Red's contract expires.  I guess there have been quite a few rumblings that the new coach wouldn't be Mel or Billy anyways, but this takes that more out of play.  I know Mel can always leave Tech for Michigan, if there is mutual wanting and having head coaching experience only strengthens his resume, but I don't think he would leave after just two years and I'm not convinced on Red staying too much longer than his current contract.

How bad is it that the most prevalent rumors for the next Michigan head coach are about Mike Babcock...?

Michigan will be fine, they will find someody to adequately replace Mel a and more than likely have a great replacement for Red, when the time comes.   But dang, this stings, I got to know Mel a little bit and he is an absolutely dynamite guy.  Best of luck to him at Tech, but I don't think he's going to need it, he'll be fine just on his own.

...but, I'm friends with a guy who was a student manager for the team in '95, and has been active in all UM Hockey Alumni events...this rumbling about Babcock has existed for a lot longer than it's been out in the public, and a number of players think it's very likely, fwiw

I have been getting this message repeatedly since about two weeks after the Wings won the Cup in 2008.  And It has come from a number of different sources over that time.  It sounds ridiculous and way too good to be true, but I can't help but wonder if Pearson leaving the program is in some way related.  See how I turned bad news into potentially good news there?

Wonder if the Tech contract has a buyout number if Mel wants and has the opportunity to return to Ann Arbor in a couple of years...

My theory as well. It keeps Mel moving forward, but also allows him to come back for the head job if he wants. In any case his taking a head coaching job can't be held against him and I wish him well.

<br>As far as the OHL I wonder if stuck around to try and get the recruits nailed down.

I'm at work so I think getting up on my desk and dancing would be inappropriate, but I am definitely dancing on the inside.

In case anybody is wondering why, I am a tech alum and a huge Huskies hockey supporter.

Copycat... I posted this 3 weeks ago! Things did look like they were going to sweeten the pot. Looks like it was enough. I'm going to show up to MTU hockey games wearing an M jersey every time I'm home next winter.

Hope to see you back in Ann Arbor one day, unless those Babcock rumors actually happen. The recruiting possibilities of that have me drooling even with the .01% chance of it actually happening.
