Medical Staff Cleared Morris to Return to Game

Submitted by Cold War on

Per Sam and Ira on WTKA this morning. Morris was cleared to return to the game by the medical staff.

which is why I just saw him on crutches and in a walking boot on campus. regardless of whether they were evaluating his leg or for a concussion, dude should not have been put back in

Until Stephen Ross and the other big donors call for action with the Regents, most likely nothing will happen.  Unlike everyone else (you and I, former lettermen, employees of the AD, the media, alums) he treats these fellow gazillionaires like gold.  So, they probably like him.

He is going to feel like this is somehow his fault.  I don't know what he thinks about the coaching staff, but it's clear he loves UM.  Now he is stuck in a situation where the whole team is involved in his injury situation and all he wanted to do was help the team win.

Yep. There's no doubt in my mind that Morris feels horrible that the coach who recruited him and that he personally likes is taking such heat now over something that happened to Shane. It's like kids whose parents get divorced frequently feel responsible for the breakup. He probably feels like he let Hoke and the team down, which is the reverse of what happened.

They obviously didn't evaluate him for a concussion. The only possible explanation of that is that they weren't paying enough attention to have developed a suspicion that he had a concussion.

Unless Heiko goes front page or some other MGoDoctor turns up with a convincing and thorough explanation of why those were not concussion-like symptoms, there's no getting out of this one. Sorry, Cold War.

So...they conducted their concussion tests and cleared him from the sideline while Morris was still playing immediately following that hit?  Wow, I'm impressed with the long-range medical exam giving abilities of our medical staff and how quickly the passing results were giving to the coaching staff who weren't even aware an exam was needed.

The OP is guilty of omission and irrelevance. When was he cleared? So you're saying he was cleared immediately after the big hit, you know, after he wobbled and then stayed in the game? That's what we're concerned about. That's what's relevant. That's not what you're (or Sam Webb is) saying. The medical staff was able to determine from a distance after seeing Morris wobble that (1) his leg was fine and more importantly (2) he was not concussed despite exhibiting clear signs of a concussion?

What do we really need here?

(1) Morris exhibits signs of a concussion (let's just skip the leg).

(2) Concussion test required.

What actually happened?

(1) Morris exhibits signs of a concussion

(2) Morris stays in the game (no concussion test given)

(3) Morris comes out of the game

(4) Morris returns to the game (no concussion test given)

Essentially, there is no possible way that Morris was cleared to play in the relevant sense: to be cleared to play, he must be evaluated, and to be evaluated, he must come off the field. Perhaps what Sam is referring to is step (4). It's clear that a trainer looked at him after (3), but no concussion test was ever given and that is after (1) and (2). We're worried about (1) and (2) here. It follows that the "cleared to play" is irrelevant and misidentifies the issue.

Maybe the coaches should check Mgoblog to see if player have concussions because apparently the users on this board have more expertise than Michigans medical staff..

Brady played a hurt QB last year, too. Devin nearly beat OSU on a broken foot.

Here is Brady from this morning.

Q. What is your quarterback situation moving forward, with Saturday starter Shane Morris and Devin Gardner, who started the first four games?
A. Well, number one, we would never put a quarterback who was hurt (in there). That would never happen. As far as where we're at with it, we usually don't talk about injuries and stay away from them. But this has kind of become an issue to some degree, and Shane Morris has got a leg injury, and that's why we pulled him from the game. We'll see where he's at.
On the down where Devin's helmet came off, there was a discussion about the timeout with the referee that I wanted to take to buy him back into the game. When I talked to the referee -- because he kind of came to the sideline -- and he said, 'No.' So, a couple seconds later the line judge comes up and says, 'Now, you can buy a timeout.' But by that time, Shane was already back in the football game.
(Shane) was on the bench and (senior football athletic trainer) Paul Schmidt was looking at his leg, and (reserve quarterback) Russell (Bellomy) was there. Russell is signaling in, him and the other quarterbacks. And when Shane heard his name, the medical staff said, 'Yeah, he can go.' And he went out on the field. We'd never put a kid out there who wasn't capable. He was medically cleared to go in on that play.

There is either a massive cover up or this was a direct violation of NCAA policy.  The whole regime needs to go.

Why has no one asked the silly (but obvious, IMO) question:

Is "Cold War" the leader of the Athletic Department gnomes that come here to support the status quo? His/her join date isn't perfect (a year late), but I wonder.

Now that we know the Shane was medically cleared to go back into the game

1) Does the NCAA also use the SCAT-2 testing for sideline assessment of concussions (used by the NFL)

2) I've Googled the test and it looks like it takes 15-20 minutes to complete

I've reviewed the sequence tape and these are my observations.  To be generous I calculated the time that Shane Morris actually stepped off of the field until he left the bench to take the snap for Gardner......elapsed time 1 minute and 33 seconds.   I've tried to link the SCAT-2 assesment tool......there is no way you complete this assessment in that amount of time

If any of you have expertise in the field of concussion assessment I was hoping you could share your knowledge.  Thanks

training.  That was a pee wee football, pee wee hockey type decision to make.  It was egregious to keep him in the game and not recognize the "wobbley walking", sensitivity to light, etc. symptoms that every youth coach on our board is able to recognize and immediately sit the kid.  The helmet hit to the jaw by itself demanded a medical check for concussion.

And, assistant coaches are told to step in on behalf of kids and keep them out if they saw the symptoms.  Now, not only does our coach look completely incompetent but so too does our medical staff.  This is such crap I cannot believe it.  WTF.

I'm literally unable to recognize my alma mater today.

Taking responsibility, working hard, there's no wrong time do the the right thing and no right time to do the wrong thing.  Where did all this go????????  Michigan Man my ass.  This is a joke.  We all need to be humbled and realize what made us who we are.  The perceived arrogance was from the fact that we were the leaders and best.  Now we're just arrogant; embarrassing.

How stupid do they think we all are?

Totally agree with the Michigan Daily.  Hoke must go today!

Complete incompetence.    I would not be surprised if students decide to begin a boycott on the next home game or games until he and Brandon are fired or resign.

This is unacceptable.

No faith in anything being reported.  I can only beleive my eyes anymore.

I am actually curious about the total lack of noise coming from anyone even remotely associated with the current program.

Is the fort that good at shutting down dissent or are the troops rallying behind their beloved leader?  Maybe it erally is a non issue?

For sure I'd have thought someone, somewhere, be it a player, parent or friend would have said something.

There's no way in hell Morris was tested for a concussion before he went back in the game.   None, zero, zip.  That's simply a breathtaking lack of regard for player safety.

It's really bad that he was even allowed to run the next play.  Putting him back in after you've pulled him for injury is literally incomprehensible.

Exactly.  Thanks for proving the point.  Hoke was a standup guy, and may win or lose, but he does it the right way and cares deeply for his players above all else.  Until he's 2-3.  Then he would blatantly TRY to keep an injured player on the field, have absolutely no regard for his players health, and go out of his way to lie to the media afterward.  Just to keep a QB on the field, you know, because he was lighting it up out there.  Yup.  That's the deal.
